For those who read my other post I just heard on the news yesterday why the police didn't get there in time to maybe have saved the mother.  The 911 call she made went to NY as where these people live is close to the border but in VT.  The 911 dispatcher could actually hear the woman screaming for help and the beating taking place, but the woman never gave her last name or the address.  So, the 911 dispatcher/police got hold of verizon to get the actual adress of the lady - and get this....... VERIZON made them fill out a form with questions etc.. it took almost 1/2 hour to do.  The police in the mean time were going door to door in that town trying to find the right house before it was too late.
Obviously, they were.  The woman might have been still alive had it not been for the mix up with the 911 call and Verizon.
Unbelieveable!!

This is the second incident I've heard of where the use of a cell phone for emergency has involved a difficulty in locating the victim.  Police are able to obtain instant information priviledges in most cases.  It is unconscianable that they had to be delayed by the policies of Verizon.

OMG, quilty, that is terrible.  Just a terrible wasteful tragedy all the way around.

botoni ~ here I think, we still have verizon landlines as well.  I did away with them a few years ago.  So, I don't know if it was a cell, or a home phone.  But, in either case, it sucks and something ought to be done about that as far as 911 and emergency cases.

Meems ~ yes, it is.  I can't even imagine what her husband is going through (the one I work with).  I would be irate to say the least with verizon for one.

    hiya :-) wow, unbelievable!

you know, your post just made me realize something i have never clocked on to before...  when i saw the tags i automatiaclly read it as  9/11  not 911  and 911 is your emergency services number!!  (ours is 999)   sorry to sway from your post but i had never linked the two together before,   xx

I'm with secretlife on this one....  I realize with a cell phone it can be difficult, but somewhere, somehow-----an obvious problem like this should have been addressed and corrected by now.  It's not only "unfortunate" it is incomprehensible and just plain wrong.  How sad that this is the electronic information age, and you can't get help in a dire emergency because of service regulations and red tape.

(to destinydiva:  For some odd reason, the day of 911, I happened to notice and realize the connection to our "911" emergency number, and have always wondered (not in a good way) about the choice of that day.  I won't spell it out, but do you see what I mean?  Wouldn't have fit the news as well as something like 918, or 931 or 903 etc....  hmmm......)

    Wow.  Just. . . wow.

I'm not a particularly litigous person, but I agree that Verizon ought to be sued.
  • RollingC said on Aug 09, 2008....
I agree the Verizon needs to be sued also... it's unfortunate that it takes episodes such as this before a policy change is made within a company.  If only somebody had used a bit of common sense a tragedy could've been avoided.

Quiet, this really scrapes a raw nerve in my heart.  It is just so sad and pointless that this woman lost her life in this way.  I dont even know how any "right" can be brought to the situation.

People always ask why I still have a "land line"  - this is the reason - so I can be found (God Forbid) I need to call 911.

This is just too sad for words.  I am very curious why this boy went bonkers -

This is what happens when policy overtakes common sense and people no longer feel empowered to use their brains.  How awful!
  • I'mNotHungry said on Aug 10, 2008....
This is unbelievable!  I agree with Wish..... sometimes policies are made and there's no deviation - people can't or won't think for themselves.
Again, I am so sorry this happened....
  • quietone said on Aug 10, 2008....

everyone ~ I don't know what will become of everything other than the trial for the boy who as it stands right now is going to be tried as an adult.  I never thought about a cell and connecting it to an adress either.

    hiya quiet :-)

  • quietone said on Aug 10, 2008....
Hi destiny, yes to the two of you. I have thought that it was on purporse the number 9/11, of course.
