I don't expect pols to be perfect, but I think it's a major disqualification if they blatantly lie to the public.

If he's going to lie about his personal life, what's to stop him from lying to us in matters of government?

It's really about trust more than anything else.
  • crybabylu said on Aug 08, 2008....
I see what you mean, but wouldn't a person be more inclined to try to conceal one's personal business than one's public business?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Aug 08, 2008....
Why do we expect our leaders or public "personas" to be perfect??? speaking only for myself, I'm more suspicious of a perfect leader.  Since perfection is a goal and rarely a state of being I tend to wonder what they're hiding.

Why can't we accept that we all are human???  I think we can accept that he is and we are human.  I think the thing we cannot accept is that he deceived us.

Why can't we accept that we all make mistakes??? Again, accepting a mistake is one thing, accepting deception is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

Why isnt this a personal matter instead of a media frenzy???One of the cons of being a public figure is that you sacrifice most of your private life.  If you can't stand the lime light you need to remove yourself from public office.

    Why is this even news?
What office is John Edwards running for?
Why do so many Americans, the media, etc. seem to have such an obsession with other people's sex lives, particularly if those people are prominent/famous?

Personally, I find Edwards' behavior to be beyond repugnant, what with his wife having terminal cancer, but I'm still having trouble figuring out why this is news.  Politicians lie to the public all the time.  At least Edwards' lies didn't get anyone killed.
  • crybabylu said on Aug 08, 2008....

unique----you answered the questions completely.  Thanks!

Eilan----My thinking exactly!  Why is this news, but to embarass the Edwards' family.

  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 08, 2008....
Even though we all "believe" that all politicians are liars by trade it is there job to be good liars and part of that is not getting caught.

I'm against marriage to begin with.  This isn't something he should HAVE to lie about.  Particularly not him since his wife is invalid.  It dosn't make him love her any less that he has sex with or even feeling for another woman.  But that is the sad society we live in.  Considering the draconian rules we have on love and sex I can't say he made the wrong call.  He just got caught.  It's not like any of you would vote for a man if he had two wives publicly.

Edwards was part of a list of likelies for a VP so while he's not directly running for an office it is important to keep an eye on him (which is why the press roughly sat on this story for some odd 9 months because it wasn't important in December)

  • uniquely-ironic said on Aug 08, 2008....
Sean - I overheard in office gossip that he professed that he didn't have feelings for the other woman.  I could forgive a person for falling in love with someone they're not married (have obligation) to, but I'm not sure if I can forgive a man for simply screwing around.
  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 08, 2008....
That's your perogative and the society that we live in.  But that's exactly my point.  Who he is or isn't fucking shouldn't be important.  But it is and that's why he lied and more than that, that's why he made the right call to lie about it.  It was either lie and MAYBE get caught later, or tell the truth and get in trouble for sure.  For a politician where any real scandal means going back to your old life it's a no brainer.

We've literally rigged the system so that being an honest politician is more of a liability than a positive trait.
  • TheNakedProfessor said on Aug 08, 2008....

If you chastise others for behavior that you perpetrate, that's hypocrisy and I don't like my "leaders" to be hypocrits. If you're going to be a politician and have affairs, don't comment negatively about the affairs of other politicians. Just shut up.

And please don't confuse politicians with leaders. Running for a popularity contest isn't leading. Most politicians never use their pulpits to lead from. They aren't equipped. They're just overrated administrators, and poor ones at that.

And I must agree that if you aren't inspired by strong emotions toward the other woman, why squander your honesty? He's either still lying to his wife ("She meant nothing to me") or to himself ("I'm really a good person").

  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 08, 2008....
Or it was just something convienent that felt good like sex often is with healthy social people.  I agre that if you're having an affair you should remain silent on the affairs of others though.

Politicians are leaders or at least decision makers like it or not.
  • curmudgeon said on Aug 08, 2008....
I see your point Sean about lying as a 50-50 chance of saving your reputation, but the payoff is far worse if you get caught cheating and lying about it - especially on the campaign trail.

Had this not been an election year, this would likely not be front page news.

You do bring up an interesting point - if other people have their eyes on a VP slot, and Edwards was in the running, might some interested party have tipped the paparazzi off?

There's no better way to knock competition off than a nice, juicy scandal.
  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 09, 2008....
Depending onw how smart you are there is a better than 50/50 chance.  The important thing to remember is that you cannot come clean and expect your career to bee there afterwards.  It just doesn't work that way.  It's 50/50 vs. 0/100.

I can't forgive a dude that fucks around on his wife when she is supposidly"fighting for her life" with the reoccurance of Breast Cancer. He proved himself to be more of the same and scum when I heard this 3hrs ago on CNN. I think all Politicos are summy, leechy, liars and wonder when a "real" Leader will stand up. I can excuse their indiscressions,I just can't take being lied to and treated like an imbecile as many politians treat the public at large. Edwards is the South's problem anyway. So they can deal with his dishonest butt. As far as Presidential hopes I can honestly say that this dude is DONE!

They start thinking they can get away with it, and I'd be willing to bet they get away with it more often than not.  It's just pathetic this is an issue.  (And even more pathetic than the fact that we aren't hearing about the war in Georgia but we are hearing about this.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 09, 2008....
@Sean:  What timing for that war in Georgia!  Do you think that was planned?  Both Russia and USA Presidents are "away" and from what I heard, a lot of the people that hold power are on "holiday".

    About John Edwards:
I heard about this devolping almost a year ago. He denied and denied it.  He was caught visiting this woman and the baby at a hotel and still denied it publicly and literally ran when a photog spotted him.  Why was he even seeing her and the baby if he claims it was over long ago? He claimed he let this woman know that his wife was in remission...Why does that make it okay?  That's just cold twice over.  He was SO about his "faith" when he was running and played it off so well that he actually cared.  It seemed like a lot of faith based people looked up to him.  A lot of people felt sympathetic toward him and his family for losing a child (Wade Edwards) already and then his wife's terminal cancer.    What I don't understand is that if he told his wife and family back in 2006 about this, then why did he NOT think in a million years that it would eventually come out when he was running in the 2008 race?

    I just don't get it...

In some ways, I agree with husband hater in the sense that mostly politics  politics is nothing but lies. Not to down all of the good politicians, but our nation's government is in many ways corrupt and full of leaders, who are used to lying and stealing from the American people.  I am so glad that John Edwards was wrong for this, but thank God that he dropped out of the race for president before all of these accusations surfaced as the truth(s). Also, it is very fortunate that Barack Obama did not choose him as his running mate in his race for the presidency. Can you imagine what a mess that would have been?
  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 09, 2008....
That's the problem there is no place for honest politicians.  If a politician came out and told the truth they'd be lucky to get elected to run a school board.

It never ceases to intrigue me that people in high places, like Edwards and Blowjob
Clinton, will trade it all for a few moments here and there of sex. I would love to
have some strange on the side, but I am not willing to ruin my life for it. So I
guess this is a good time to introduce my new ... SEX DOLL

That is so true. Howver, even school superintendent positions are full of corruption, which is part of the reason why our school systems in many parts of the country are behind on an international level.

Sean----Since I wrote this post, I have listened to many commentaries, and I do see now, why they think this is important news.

He was terribly selfish to even go after the presidency after already having gotten himself caught up in this "living a lie" thing with another woman.

It is haunting "what if" he would have been the presidential nominee and this was coming out?  I shudder to think!  Thanks for your comments, Sean,

Unique-----I about "gasped" when I heard that.  I think he should have put more thought into what he said before going public with this!

TNP-----I see very much what you mean!  I never was a John Edwards supporter, because even from the beginning, there were little things that just didn't ring true to me......hypocricy, like you said....

Curm----What got me especially is, I believe his words tipped the scales on Hillary.  I have been a Hillary supporter from day one, no matter what people think of her husband.  Too bad we didn't hear his admission months ago, I bet anything it would have made a difference in how people viewed his endorsement of Obama.

Hillary was already failing in the polls for sure, but still had a chance till he came out with his endorsement of Obama and knocked it out of the park!!!

Husbandhater:----I see what you mean!  Yeah that was pretty bad!  Thanks for commenting!

  • crybabylu said on Aug 10, 2008....

Everyone:    I will get back to answering the other comments, I promise!  Got to take care of something else right now, but will be back!!

  • crybabylu said on Aug 10, 2008....

Sean---I so agree with you on that!  The news about Georgia is very much on my mind!

Daily---Even tho I never bought into his "campaign".....I still was shocked at the blatant lies!

20---Are there any "good" politicians?   It seems to me that our standards for politics almost makes it impossible for any "good" ones to come out and run.

Alien:....No offense intended by my removing that link.  I was just concerned that some might be offended by it.  ..LOL

What I am getting from this conversation is that this is all pretty much "normal" by todays standards for politicians.......The problem I have with this is that we need to set the bar higher for our leaders....expect far more from them than we do ourselves even......the cream is supposed to rise to the top....we need role models as leaders, not degenerates.
If we toss out all of them that engage in activity such as this, not to mention criminal behavior and major conflicts of interest, then things can only get better.......otherwise, we get what we vote for.
  • crybabylu said on Aug 10, 2008....

  • GEORGEBUSHSUCKS said on Aug 10, 2008....
It was naughty of course, but if his wife had done it would the press wallow in the story? We elect them into office. If they do their  job well why worry about their private sex lives? G.Bush was into drugs and booze, and did a fucked up job.Lets talk about that! That is important. Bush is a real coward Nancy! Edwards is no NANCY!
  • curmudgeon said on Aug 11, 2008....
The question is - if Edwards is willing to lie to the American People on the campaign trail, how can we be sure he's not lying to us on policy matters?

All he had to do was say yes he had an affair and it's none of our business. End of story.

Bush's drug problem has been well covered by the lib press. Obama admits to snorting coke and the lib press ignores it.

The real cowards are the Democrats who have given Bush everything he's asked for since they took Congress in 2006. Despite his low popularity, a hostile Congress and a biased leftist press, Bush has gotten his way for the last two years. In fact, the Republicans fough him harder of immigration far harder than the Democrats ever fought him on anything. He's playing it strong right up to the finish.

    Cowardly? Hardly.
  • crybabylu said on Aug 13, 2008....

    I know I'll never trust him, but I wasn't
"into him" anyhow.....I was for Hillary, remember?

I'll vote Obama, but only because of the democrat's platform.

Yup!  I'm voting along party lines!

If Edwards had gotten the nomination, and we didn't know about the affair, I don't know what I would have done.  Thank God it didn't happen!  How selfish was that?  Even running for president in the first place!  Putting the Democrat Party at risk like that!....

I have lots of concerns about the next president, and I just can't vote REPUBLICAN!
