i saw a segment on the local news observing that many couples are getting married today, because the date, 08/08/08, is an auspicious one. leaving aside the fact that 01/01/01, 02/02/02, 03/03/03, etc also were, as will 09/09/09 next year: i found this peculiar, to be honest.

this notion of getting married on an auspicious day is to me goofy.

i dunno, maybe it's just me, but i keep thinking to myself that the fact it's one's wedding day should itself make a day--any day--plenty auspicious in its own right, you know? isn't any given day's meaning--whatever it may be--strictly a function of the meaning which we ourselves choose to invest in it? not what some random other people, whose interests & priorities might have been completely different from our own, might say?

in saying this, i know i'm echoing something a friend told me once about not observing valentine's day. it's a point on which we disagree.

but let's say that you do accept the idea that an auspicious day can have meaning independent of whatever meaning you might give it, or that a particular date is very personally significant to you. that being the case: what date would, to you, be an auspicious day on which to get married?

Ed- I know a couple who fairly recently wanted to have their child born on one of those 'auspicious dates' even if it meant taking the child. I can't imagine one date having any more sign of success than any other, unless you are steeped in astrology perhaps.

I don't have any date to answer your question, but I have known people who desired dates for marriage on certain other relatives birthdays and holidays. My wife and I chose our day to get married on convenience.

My first wedding date was picked for convenience.  I think a lot of people do that.  My second wedding date was picked for it's uniqueness.  It does make it a bit easier to remember.  Had is been years away I would have no doubt picked another day.  I don't put a lot of importance on picking auspicious dates.  If it's gonna work, it's gonna work.

For my previous marriage, he slapped a calendar down on the table and said, "Pick a date."  Now that was an auspicious beginning....proved correct for the most part.....

For this one, it fit our schedules for my vacation etc....and also is kind of an easy one to remember--but I agree that the date on the calendar has nothing to do with luck--not even April Fool's Day.  (but I bet I still wouldn't pick that one--or Friday the 13th--so there you go....)

Well, Ed, isn't getting married on a day like today akin to getting engaged on Valentine's Day? I mean if the wedding day should be auspicious in and of itself regardless of the date, shouldn't that be the same for engagements as well?

Although, Valentine's day isn't really known as an auspicious day. But, it's the same concept; let's get engaged on Valentine's Day as it's the most romantic day of the year (or so some would believe).

For our wedding date, Mr. Z and I picked a day that would work best for immediate families who would be traveling from Utah to Texas and from Virginia to Texas for the wedding. Unfortunately the only drawback for us on the date (no matter the one we picked that summer) was that his brother wouldn't be able to attend as they were expecting their first child that summer. He was born 15 days after our wedding.

Ed - Today is a particularly auspicious day for the Chinese; the word for "8" is "ba" which they equate to the sound "fa" which is the chinese word for great prosperity and fortune.  This is why the Chinese chose today to begin the olympic games (most often the summer games are begun later in the month of August) - so they can rack up the Gold Medals; they began opening ceremony at 8:08 pm their time.

No, I am not particularly knowledgable with regard to the Chinese culture, it's just that its all over the news today<grin>.

As for this date, it is cool as it will only happen once a century, like 1/1/01, 2/2/02 all the way to 12/12/2012 - so I guess all those days will be auspicious?

  • FutureGoddess said on Aug 08, 2008....
oh, and for the record - their were more weddings last year on 7/7/07 than their will be today - was that day luckier than today?

I know that a lot of people got married here to day among them Adda's friend. And I got my computer back today. lol

I got my iPod today...that's pretty damn auspicious if you ask me...

and FutureGoddess...I believe 12/12/2012 is considered the end of the world (if you follow the belief that the Mayan's predicted the end of the world...their calender ends on that day)

I noted yesterday (08/08/08) that it was the 20th wedding anniversary for a lot of people. I remember on August 8, 1988 a Vancouver newspaper did a story about the large number of weddings scheduled for that day. And it was not just Chinese either. Many westerners who had Chinese friends or were familiar with Chinese superstitions were also getting married.

As you may know, Japan uses the empirical year and the western year. Typically, official documents use the empirical year, like my withdrawel slips at the bank (if I don't use my card). In 1999 it was the year Heisei 11 and on November 11, at 11:11 the ticket machines at the train stations broke down because too many people were buying tickets during that one minute. People wanted a ticket that read "11-11-11 11:11".

My wife and I chose our wedding day partly because of the time I could take off work but also because of our favourite numbers. We also noted that if you removed the 00 from 2008 and rearranged the remaining digits we got our birthdays. So in a way we wanted to get that date for our wedding. As it turned out, that day went nearly 100% perfectly and any small glitches were nothing to be down in the mouth about.

tbs - wasn't there a day in the 1990's that was predicted as the last day of the earth?  And didn't everyone think that the world was coming to an end at midnight on 1/1/00 - the new millenium?  12/12/2012 - I will be only 45 years old - I will not be old enough for the world to end!  I will make sure that there is more - even if I have to turn the clocks back <grin>

Future Goddess - yes, it was.  The number 7 is a considered in the western world to be a very lucky number (especially amongst gamblers and lotto players).  Three is also a lucky grouping.  To be married on a day under one grouping of three 7's is be blessed with extrordinary and life-long luck.

Ed:  I meant to comment here the other day, but I was feeling really cruddy over a personal family matter.

I remember where I was on 8-8-88.  LAKE PLACID, NY!  Winter Olympics in 1980 were held there. I'm not sure if this is fact or I was thinking about thinking it at the time... I think I recall hearing on the radio news about AIDS for the first time and maybe Liberacci (SP?) had died.  My Parent's took us there just on a weekend trip to show us another part of the country.  On Friday I thought about that trip because of the date and I remembered being where the Olympics were held in 1980.  It was pretty cool watching the ski team practice in summer!

That day was also the first time I said "F^&K" in front of my Parent's.  I was 13 but I didn't get in trouble because we were playing the "Name Game" in the car.  You know "Bananna Rama Fo-F^&K Me My Mo-Muck....insert persons name that rhymes"
I also recalled that they still circulated $2 bills and gave them back as change.  As of a few years ago, they still did it...they took my Niece and she exchange a $20 for all $2 bills.

My birthday has a lot of the same numbers and people tell me all the time I must be lucky!  If they only knew...

beyond: i'm not sure i understand re: that couple and the birthdate of their child--are you referring to a c section delivery? my own wedding date was actually a function of convenience at the time--a good friend of mine was getting married on the weekend we were considering but that engagement ended, leaving us with the date we chose after we were already committed. :>

u-i: i tend to agree with you re: if it's gonna work, it's gonna work, to be honest.

wombat: heh, funny re: april 1 or friday the 13th! i don't believe i was aware you'd been married previously, though. :>

z: i knew you were gonna mention that! :> and yes, i'm aware there's a certain similarity in the thinking there. we too had family coming from a ways off, although granted not as far as you did. we also had a family member on my wife's side who was unable to attend as she too was due at around the time of our wedding--turned out the baby was delivered i think 3 days after. :>

eilan: now that's certainly an easy date to remember! was there a particular reason you chose it beyond that, though? you and mr. eilan always struck me as being rather pracical about such things. ?

FG: heh...i didn't see any articles re: the reason for why 8 is considered auspicious in chinese culture, thanks! and yeah, i do think that there's something about the scarcity of such dates--i remember thinking the same when i was in school and the date was something like 10/10 or the like--but the year didn't match up so i was looking forward to the next millennium when we could actually have such dates again--i'm surprised i'd forgotten about that until now!

skald: i'm glad you finally got your computer back, skald! that's nifty about adda's friend--did she have a good time at the wedding?

tbs: woo-hoo! yeah, ipod-ness! :> i don't think i knew that about the mayan calendar, that's really neat!

grape: heh...yep, more or less. :>

hotaka: holy crap, that story about the ticket machines was really, really funny! and the numerological significance of your wedding date is really neat! :>

sammies place: what about that particular date do you find auspicious? or did i misunderstand your first comment?

daily: hey, it's not like i've been particularly good about responding to comments myself in the past 2 weeks-ish, as i'm sure you must've noticed by now! :> wow, that's a whole lot of milestones for that day, isn't it? that's funny about the name game. i don't think i remember the last time i saw a $2 bill--jeez, now i'm gonna spend the entire morning trying to remember!

neat?!?! It's the end of the world man!!! lol, I think it's cool too. And it'll be the last one for a millennium (sp).

ed: We always joke about choosing a date that my husband will remember, but in all seriousness, he's pretty good about remembering important dates.  The reason we chose 02/02/02 was because it fell on a Saturday, it happened to be my husband's four-day weekend, our respective divorces were final, and I was 12 weeks pregnant.

Ed:  I JUST found the $2 bill I got there when I was cleaning last night!  HOW weird!

Yeah, that day was full of things.  I looked up when Liberaci died and it was actually 1987.  It had to be something that connected him to someone on that day that died of AIDS. I remember the place in the car that I was sitting in and asking my mother if I was going to get AIDS as I didn't know anything about it until that day.  I just searched Wiki and only can find the uprising in Burma!  What the heck!  I swear, Ed, that day is implanted in my mind forever because of where we were, and first learning about AIDS, and all the events of that day.  There's no way I'm confused...I'm dead set on that day and my Mother just confirmed that it was the day.  She said that they were talking on the radio about the disease and how they were connecting it to starting in monkey's at the time and questioning how Liberaci contracted the disease.  She said it was all very new and nobody knew even CLOSE to what we now know about the disease.

WHEW!  Thank goodness I called her.  I would have been hitting my head all day!

tbs: yeah, but every doom & gloom prophecy's fallen flat to date so now i just find 'em funny, you know? :>

eilan: ah, that would certainly explain things. :> and i'm not surprised mr eilan's good at remembering important dates for some reason. :>

daily: you just found the $2 bill? that's really freaky! you know, it's weird the way certain dates are filled with significance of such a personal sort, isn't it? we remember these dates, maybe even have a ritual that goes along with them? but i know precisely what you mean. :>
