Last week one of our boss's lost his son of 17 years in a terrible ATV accident.. killed on the spot.  The boss and his wife both work at the place, so it was a double tragedy for us and a total tragedy and shock for the family.  A few years ago another couple that work with me also lost their son of 21 in a car accident.
Last night I learned that over the weekend, another co-worker lost his wife from the hands of her 14 year old son. She also had a sister that works with us.  She had called 911 and they heard the "beating" taking place on the phone, but by the time the police got there, the 14 year old answered the door and showed them where his mother lie dead, beaten and then shot in the head.
This boy is 14 years old and will be tried as an adult.  It was on my local news this morning.  The boy shows no remorse, and is like in a trance of some sort.

What would make a kid of 14 do such a terrible thing?  I just don't understand things in this world lately.  Have we all gone mad???  Is this becoming the "norm"??  It is a scary thought.

So, once again, we sign yet another sympathy card at work.. it just doesn't seem like enough sometimes.

I have a hard time writing a coherent comment because I am so horrified by the violence.  I'm glad he's being tried as an adult.  The object of the juvenile system is rehabilitation, and as far as I can see, he is far beyond that.  Such a waste all the way around.

I'm so sorry that this tragedy is touching all of you at your work.

Senseless tragedies, all of them.  The last one is more than a double tragedy.  The family is now destroyed, the 14 year old's life is all but forfeit, it makes no sense at all.

I don't understand it either.  Makes me go home and hug my kids a little closer and let them "get away" with more than they should.

There seems to be a terrible and frightening increase in these sorts of ununderstandable acts of totally violence.  Add the greyhound beheading of a few days ago to the list.  Are all these things a new phenomena or did we just not have the same media attention to the horrors?  Does that publicity create copy cat repeats of violence?

I don't know if there is an answer of why there is so much tragedy and suffering, or if it seems to come in bunches because it is all more widespread and one individual will know of more at once than usual.  Makes your head spin, but I feel for all your co-workers.  And for you for having to think of it and deal with it also.

As for the 14 year old---almost beyond comprehension, but seems to be the norm for the news these days, also.  Is it truly the violence of the video games, movies, etc...that lead to these kinds of things?

Or just the breakdown of society in general on full steam ahead?
  • wishyouwerehere said on Aug 05, 2008....
The world's violence is indeed overwhelming sometimes.  I am not sure how anyone, let alone a 14 year old, could become so detached from his humanity, feel so separate from his mother and the sanctity of life that it would be possible to commit such a heinous act.  I feel terribly sorry for him.

As for the tragic loss of your boss' son, it is incomprehensible.  Always, there are these reminders of how precious time and relationships truly are as we never know how many moments are left.

My deepest condolences, Quiet - Please find some way to be good to yourself.  Things like this can really take a toll on our spirit - Wishy

I don't even know what to say.... such tragedy in the world sometimes, the violence, the accidents, lives taken too soon..... I certainly can't pretend to understand it.

As someone who has recently lost a loved one via a car accident - I have grieved and asked myself why.... but I don't think there are answers to these kinds of things. I think they just "are", they "happen"......

I am so sorry for those in your life who have lost loved ones through tragic circumstances..... so sorry....

My thoughts are with you....... H.

Botoni, I heard about that Greyhound incident, I was shocked and horrified about that... will never ride a bus anywhere!

I used to work with emotionally disturbed kids and sometimes even if the parents do everything right in raising their kids, there is that chance a child is a sociopath. There is no cure for this type; you only pray they understand that life is precious. This 14 needs to be tried as an adult, though I would like know what drove him to do commit this act of violence

i dont understand what the world is going on right now... this is just sad... my prayers is with the family who have to endure this.

I think it makes it more overwhelming when it is all happening in such a small community like mine is.  It sure doesn't make it any easier on the families one way or the other.. but the news is bigger when the town is smaller I guess I am trying to say.

Thank you all for your comments.  and yes, there at work, tonight, side by side were the 2 sympathy cards for the boss and his wife and the co-worker and his sister.. It is almost too much for even our big plant.

I am so sorry to have learned this.  I find it unthinkable that this happened but it did. The only thing that I can say is maybe the boy was disturbed to begin with and nobody noticed or looked close enough.
My cousin married a wonderful woman and I was shocked to learn that years ago her parents (she's adopted and so is her brother) were murdered by her brother in a rage over a girl that he was dating and the mom didn't want her in the house or something like that (can't remember) .
Except for that rage I never heard anything bad about him.  He's supposed to be a cool guy.
I don't think that it's due to violence of the virtual games as then I'd have done the same thing.  Has to be more than that.  There's too much stress in society nowadays.

My God, what a terrible thing.  I can't even find any words.  My sympathies to you Quiet, and to your whole community.
  • quietone said on Aug 06, 2008....

RC ~ you do have a point about the virtual games I guess.. but some young people may not be able to handle such things ya know?  I also agree with the stress and everyone just seems to be "too busy".

Expendable ~ yes, that seems to fall true more often then not.  I will.. thank you.

Actorguy ~ Thank you, I just feel so bad for the 2 families.  It will be so very hard for them to come back to work and have to "face us" you know? I mean do we say anything, or do we not?

That is very sad. The kid is 14 and has so much anger. Anger + stress + drugs      + ignorance + indifference + neglect + alike friends (peer pressure)                        + no supervision + media + ...........etc. ..........  =  ?   sociopath?    It's scary to think about.  Of course, this might describe some older people too. Very sad.

d2d ~ yes it is sad, and probably most of what you said is true.  And I also agree that this does happen to adults too.... but it is still no excuse.

the world is definately testing peoples faith in humanity at the moment thats all i can say, but as long as people care enough to sign a sympathy card i guess there is a small amount of hope...
  • quietone said on Aug 09, 2008....

ed ~ it is very sad indeed. A lot of us around here are in shock over this.

phie ~ yes, I think you are right.  As strange as it sounds, I also feel bad for the 14 year old who now just ruined his whole life along with everyone elses.

  • quietone said on Aug 11, 2008....
nammiev ~ Oh, my gosh, I am so, so sorry for your loss of 2 friends.  What on earth would make someone want to do that at such a young age?
  • nammiev said on Aug 11, 2008....

neither of them were perticually unhappy well not to anyones notice, no notes no depression no sadness they just both decided to hang themselves.
