Sorry. I have always been a fan of Steven Wright.
Well, I moved over the weekend. I actually signed the lease last Thursday. And I promptly pulled a back muscle Thursday night moving a heavy box. I know, I know - it was my own fault for packing the box too full and for not lifting with my knees. But that is doing much better already, and I was very careful with the rest of the move.
I managed to move most of the heaviest boxes (full of my treasured books) on Thursday night. Friday evening I took a break because a friend was arriving and I was giving my sore back a rest. But Saturday was busy… Said friend of mine came up to help, and my soon-to-be-ex-wife also helped me move. Between the three of us and a borrowed pickup truck, we managed to get the bulk of my things up to the apartment by Saturday afternoon. To thank them for all their help, I treated both to dinner that night.
Sunday was spent getting some more things together then going to assemble the furniture. My friend and my wife came to lend a hand again. Unfortunately, too many cooks spoil the pot, as the expression goes, and putting the bed platform frame together properly took three tries before getting it right. Would’ve helped if the directions weren’t in Chinese, but who’s complaining? The mattress-in-a-box was neat to watch expand, and it is remarkably comfortable. Then again, I’ve been sleeping on an old worn-out futon for almost a year. At least reassembling the futon itself went easier, and that will act as my couch for now instead of my bed.
The rest of Sunday afternoon was spent unpacking a little bit, setting up my wireless router, and then heading back to the house to help with the yard work before it stormed again. The lawn was already knee-high in places, and I wanted to make sure it got done before I left. Then there was laundry and dinner, and my friend left for home that evening. Of course, somewhere during all of this, I packed my mobile phone and didn’t find it again until Monday… =P I spent my last night in the house on Sunday.
Monday started bright and early with a trip to the DMV to change my address on my license and registration. Then it was off to file the divorce papers at the courthouse. There was a lot of waiting at both locations, but nothing too terribly bad. Then it was back to the house to pack up the last little things and my clothes and bicycle. When I got to the apartment, I started unpacking. And I found my phone. Of course, there are always things one forgets to pack, like my toothbrush and my alarm clock... Made a special trip to go back and get them in the evening.
I received a call from my soulmate in the afternoon. It was the first time since last Thursday that I heard her voice. I’ve been missing her terribly.
I went grocery and supply shopping Monday night. It was strange being able to buy things that I want for a change without getting a sour look or complaint. Of course, there are always things one forgets to buy. I’ll be heading back out to pick up a couple of more things this evening, but the rest will wait until next week.
There are still three boxes of books I need to unpack and cram all onto one bookshelf. I’ll buy a stand for my television later since I am using an end table for now. Oh, and I unpacked the bottles of wine I had brought, only to realise I forgot to bring my bottle opener set… I’ll ask my wife she minds parting with it next time I talk to her. I am sure there are a dozen other little things I left behind too, but I’ll worry about those later.
I went to bed somewhat early-ish for me, around ten-thirty last night, but I could not sleep. New place, lots of things running through my head, budgets to balance… But I eventually drifted off sometime after one. It’s strange listening to all the new sounds the place has. I’m sure I will get used to it all quickly enough. That or I’ll be too exhausted to notice before long…
Still tired after the move. But a part of me is already starting to feel at home and at peace. At least nobody is talking to me like I’m an idiot today… ;-)
