so i've been watching swingtown. for those of you who are unfamiliar with the show: it's set in a suburb of chicago during the '70s and follows the life of a young couple (the millers), their 2 kids and their neighbors.

the title arises from the fact that the family moved into a new neighborhood and their neighbors (the deckers), a childless couple, are swingers, so the show revolves in many ways around the resulting culture clash, thrown into relief by the couple's former neighbors (the thompsons), who are more conventional.

i'll admit, i figured it would be nothing but cheap thrills & lame titillation, but i'm finding there's more to it than that. not a whole lot more, but it's been interesting viewing, seeing how people respond to the changing social mores of the day.

so is anybody else watching?

Ed, I didn't have any interest in watching this, but maybe I should have given it a second thought.  If I get some child free time soon, I'll have to watch an episode on line.

Bye the way...GREAT NEWS!  "Dirty Sexy Money" is coming back this fall!  I was so ticked when the writers strike knocked that one out.  Lucy Lu will be part of the cast!

to be honest I didn't think we needed yet another show on tv like that. The one episode I did watch, did just prove I need not watch any more.  I know swinging goes on all over, but why put it on tv to show our younger generation?  To me, there is already more than too much of that on tv.  Including some rude and crude cartoons.

I guess I'm out of touch, Ed.  I've never heard of it.  In all honesty, I don't watch too much of any dramatic series.

I try not to watch anything that's hyped, retro or "critically acclaimed".

I watched an episode of "Mad Men" the other day and am still trying to figure out what all the hoo-haa is about. To me, it's just another show about vapid, self-absorbed morons with more money than they know what to do with, only this is set in the days of Jackie Kennedy prancing around the White House. Big deal.

How this is different from any other "critically acclaimed" series is beyond me.

TV critics must get their credentials off of matchbooks or a google adsense link.

hmm...this show sounds interesting.  Always been fascinated with the whole concept of swinging.  I'll check it out and see what it's about.  thanks

Isn't it on CBS?  I'd have to wonder whether the Big Three networks can truly do justice to a show about swinging, what with the uproar from the prudes and the religious whackjobs about Janet Jackson's boob.

If you think it's interesting, I might give it a try.  :)

p.s. ~ LOL, no I am not a prude of sorts, and I know there is a lot of "stuff" on tv these days.. it is just not what I would call good entertainment. there now I feel better! haha.....
  • BurnedOut said on Aug 05, 2008....
Eilan...do you mean swinging or the show?  lol
  • Eilan said on Aug 05, 2008....
BurnedOut: The show. My husband and I have done the consensual nonmonogamy thing. :)
  • BurnedOut said on Aug 05, 2008....
eilan, really?  wow...so how did that work out for you?  My wife and I have been talking about that too.
  • Eilan said on Aug 05, 2008....
We had a period in late 2004/early 2005 where we did some threesomes--never did the swinging in a couples-swap sense.  It was okay, but for me, the fantasy was much better than the reality.  I don't think I'm wired to separate sex and love particularly easily.

    No regrets, though.
  • BurnedOut said on Aug 05, 2008....
interesting:-)  thanks for the info.  Yeah, my wifey and I have been talking about doing some stuff like that.  She wanted to spice it up a little bit, and I suggested swinging or threesomes...she was definitely into the idea.  We'll see:-)  I'm glad you have no regrets...i'm sure that's not the case with everyone though.
  • Eilan said on Aug 05, 2008....
    You're welcome.  :)

I've found that it's a touchy subject to discuss sometimes, even on sites that pride themselves on being sexually open.  I've been told that my husband and I "aren't really married," that we're no better than animals in heat, that we're setting a bad example for our kids (which I find odd, because I don't see how my sex life, vanilla or otherwise, is ever my kids' business).  Etc, etc. . .
  • BurnedOut said on Aug 05, 2008....
exactly.  Couldn't agree more.  so, we're open to the idea.  I dunno how to explain, just that I've had this crazy fantasy of seeing my wife get crazy:-)  But thanks for being open about it!  I'll let you know how my experience goes:-)

Sorry silverwispher for hogging all your comments:-)

I haven't watched that show and actually never even heard about it. I'll have to check up on it when I get the chance.

Not watching it. We didn't have any interest in it.

Sorry Silver, this is not my cup of tea to be honest. As someone posted, I'm really not into retro type shows, not since everytime they tried to do one with the 80's it gets cancelled so I refuse to support the other retro shows.

Will check it out if I can find it......if Daily can, I can.....just new to me!

daily: hey there stranger! :> and thanks for the heads-up re: dirty sex money! :D i was annoyed by that, myself!

quietone: i tend to steer clear of discussions of "what we need", as they are invariably bound in a given person's intrinsically subjective views, i've found.

    CW: it isn't exactly everyone's taste, i'll confess. :>

curm: actually, i don't believe that this series is critically-acclaimed, to be honest. is it? because i was unaware of that. ?

burnedout: hi, welcome to my blog & thanks for visiting! it's an interesting show, if you ask me--but then again, i guess you could have guessed that, huh? :>

eurekame: as i said to burnedout: i think so, at least. :>

eilan: i do think it's interesting--and of course, thank you for explaining re: your experiences. :> and gorram it, did i get the network wrong? gah!

rollingc: well, as i said to CW, it isn't exactly everyone's tastes so keep that in mind should you decide to give it a shot. :>

z: i can easily see how this wouldn't be of much interest for some. i just found of interesting, you know?

pb: yeah, sadly the show is heavily retro, and i'm not exactly big on 70s music--and annoyingly, almost every commercial break, they hawk the soundtrack to the episode!

wombat: if you do watch, i'm curious to know what you think of it. :>

I'm late on this little chat, but since I am a telefanatic I decided it'd be ok to put in my two cents.
I have watched an episode of the program SWINGTOWN and I could not get into it. I think the actors just don't attract me to the idea. But I do think the actor that plays Mr. Miller is a great actor in everything else I've seen him in (Pirates movies, for example). So I think I'd dig the show if the actors were swapped, and maybe the time period too. Just does not seem realistic to me. Now that I put in more like ten cents worth, I'll scoot outta your hair.
