NEW HAVEN - A 15-year-old dirt-bike New Dirt Bike rider who collided with a van on Reed Street Wednesday afternoon died at Yale-New Haven Hospital early this morning, a city official said.

The teen, Quinnel Payne of New Haven, sustained severe head trauma in the crash, said city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.

The driver of the van, who was pulled from the van and beaten by a mob of citizens in the neighborhood, was in stable condition Wednesday night at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Mayorga said.

While the crash remains under investigation, Mayorga said it appears as though the driver was not at fault. He did not have a stop sign, she said. The teenager hit the back quarter panel of the van, she said.
