well, that weekend didn't go quite as i thought it might...

as i believe i've mentioned before: the mrs and i have had most of our weekends this summer booked for us. i know, for those of you who are parents, this isn't exactly a hardship b/c that's normal, i suppose.

but for us, that's enormously irritating.

so we decided earlier in the week that we would spend the weekend (now this past weekend) doing all the things that are near to us that we always kept saying, "hey, let's do that some time!" and saturday, we began doing exactly that. owing to the weather we decided to stay relatively local: what we had in mind for the itinerary was relatively local. we planned on doing a few things that were further away for saturday but the weather forecast suggested the weather would be terrible saturday but beautiful sunday, weather-wise. well, all the local stuff was stuff that could be done indoors, so we decided to switch to the local stuff saturday, the farther stuff on sunday.

that was, as you'll soon see, for the best.

so saturday, we poked around, found an interesting number of stores, and generally had a great time, although granted, we walked around quite a bit so we had pretty tired tootsies.

we headed to a local restaurant for dinner, a place we'd been to several times previously when it was known by a different name & under different ownership. the meal was superb, i must say.

so on leaving, we headed out, got in the car and tried to go home.

the operative word here of course is "tried".

i tried starting the car but it didn't stay that way. in fact, i tried it several times, but each time the engine cut out so fast that i couldn't even change gears!

to make a long story short: we couldn't get the car started in a meaningful way. we waited for around 30 mins until a tow truck showed up. we had the driver take the car to a repair shop and hoofed it back home from there--thankfully, a stroll of less than 2 miles.

while waiting for the tow truck, the mrs and i realized just how lucky we were, though: if we'd gone on with our intended plan, to visit a city about an hour away, if we'd had this problem at night in a strange city, the situation would have been a lot more complicated! we were relatively close to home, we were in a restaurant parking lot, the shop is a brisk walk...if we had to have car trouble at all, that was almost as good as it could have been! i dunno, maybe that's pollyanna of me, but this could have been so much worse and ultimately, i was merely inconvenienced. no big deal.

so i've called a colleague from work for a ride to the office in the morning and i'm hoping that the repairs, whatever they might be, will be relatively straightforward and quick. and ideally cheap, of course... :>

today's certainly going to be an interesting day--which reminds me, i gotta e-mail the boss & let her know i'll be in late.

so i hope your weekend went better than mine did--but then again, mine wasn't so bad, in retrospect!

so how was yours?

Here's to hoping for relatively cheap repairs! [fingers crossed] And you know you're not going to get a Pollyanna remark from me on your outlook there. ;-)

My weekend...well, yesterday was...beyond difficult, but ultimately I think it's going to bring better things. And today is a little too new to tell just yet. You know me though, high hopes. Maybe it'll be a surprisingly good day! :)

Ed- I don't believe in 'cheap' repairs. I haven't had one of those since I had midnight black hair. But it could have been worse as you said and I think you and mrs had a great attitude considering this was a very much needed weekend alone. And to top it off, you get to go to work late.

My weekend didn't exactly turn out to plan either but, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I had my egg retrieval on Sunday. They were only able to retrieve three eggs, I was really hoping for more. Three is better than zero though.

Ah.The best layed plans of mice and men... I so appreciate your positive attitude. Things happen. I have never had an inexpensive car repair but I send you wishes for the impossible! Let's see, what did I do this weekend. Well, my grandson from 2 thousand miles away, is visiting. (He flies alone) So I spent sweet time with him. Visited my parents. Had my darling grandaughter with me yesterday. Tried more curtains in the remodeled areas. Nothing exciting Ed. Just a weekend, but a pleasant one.

My weekend went well enough.  We had a nice day for the reunion.

I didn't do much yesterday, other than laundry and some other housework, but my husband and our neighbor took out a couple of small trees and then used the neighbor's bulldozer to flatten some "lumpy" areas of our property.

    ed,
Friday was a blur, as i worked the night before 'til 7am. Saturday was good. I took care of a lot of chores around the house. Yesterday, I went to my mom's house and did chores for her. Talked to my sister on the phone and made plans for next Saturday. I need to take Mom to her new house. Helped my niece move to her new apt. Made some salsa (turned out very hot). And, then made dinner.  So, it was a nice weekend. Sounds boring, i know. But, there is always something going on around here with my kids showing up all the time. I love it.

Yeah, here's to cheap car repairs. If there is such a thing. Glad you were close to home and not somewhere strange.

Good thing that happened close by.  If your wife has a car then you can alternate with her for a couple of days.  Most marriages I know have two cars although some do not.
It's better to look at it on the positive side and find the silver lining.  It really is a good thing that it happened close to home so it was less of a headache.  I take it you have a roadside assistance card that will help you out in situations like these.  I've had one for years and was always criticized because it seemed that I used it for other people only but just once that it happens to you makes you a believer.
    Glad everything worked out ok.

I'm a firm believer in things happening when they do for a reason.......you didn't venture off and get in some kind of worse jam due to the weather.  I've had a few examples of this kind of karma, and I try to listen to it when it rears it's crazy head.  Glad you made it home ok, even if you had to walk a bit, but I wonder----I bet that was somewhat of a nice "together" time maybe?

Anyway, my weekend was a blur.....starting a new job today had me going nutsy and wishing I could stop the clock.  But the alarm went off this morning.

I made it through and the best thing I can say so far is I am glad I was able to be alive to shut off the alarm....ha.

Have fun on all your planned adventures and listen to the karma........

I'm glad you were close to home, Ed.  That surely made the whole thing much less stressful.  I've had to be towed when I was away from home and that is no picnic.

My weekend was good.  I took off for a couple of days to go to a baseball tournament out of state  The heat was awful, but I remembered my sunscreen.  :-)

I'm glad you guys were close to home when the car gave you trouble. I can't imagine having it towed from out of town to home would have been cheap. UGH.

Our weekend was good. We spent part of the day Saturday at the pool just goofing off and relaxing. Then Sunday we went to the county fair and spent a good half a day there.

Ed....I really want to hear about it if the repair turned out 'cheap'.  It sounds like a pleasant and peaceful weekend to me other than the car part.  Mine was, lets say, interesting.  Had some pleasant time with friends, got some stuff done on the house and met someone uh...................interesting but................

    WHAT'S A WEEKEND?
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 05, 2008....
hey guys, i have an update: apparently, the car needed a new computer. this was not a cheap repair, and it's also re-set the odometer to 0. that should prove interesting. it's far from a cheap repair, sadly, so that's unfortunate but what are you going to do, right?

infernal: as you can see, all the finger-crossing didn't help but i appreciate the thought, at least! hope your day went well after all!

beyond: yeah, the getting to work late was a bit welcome, i must say. re: how we view it, i suppose i could have been angry or frustrated but the simple truth is that our reality is predicated upon our perception and i can control my perception so why not, you know?

vm: exactly, three is still better than 0! so what's the next step in the process for you guys?

woman: as i said to beyond, our perceptions determine our reality, you know? :> i appreciate the well wishes but sadly, you were right, it is indeed impossible. :> and something i recall from being a kid myself: sometimes, when a parent can say "nothing exciting" is going on, that's a good thing, isn't it? :D

eilan: i'm glad you had a good time at the reunion! how about your daughter's b-day celebration? and i'm just curious: you mean mr eilan wasn't man enough to remove the stumps with his bare hands? :D

day2day: hi! so what kind of salsa was it that you made? and no, there's apparently no such thing as cheap car repairs. ah, well...so why is your niece moving?

rollingc: the roadside assistance is provided, perhaps surprisingly, by my car insurance carrier--weird, huh? we only have the one car between us, but it works for us. :> and yeah, definitely a good thing it all happened close to home!

wombat: you know, i've not much been a believer in karma, to be honest--but hey, i'm open to the idea that i'm wrong. :D so how's the job?! i'm still behind so i haven't gotten to that post yet, sadly.

CW: baseball tournament? i don't think i realized you were a sports fan, to be honest! i'm glad you enjoyed your weekend. yeesh, my sympathies re: your away from home towing experience!

z: yeah, we're glad, too! that would have been a massive ugh, no question! sounds like you had a good time at the fair, and i'm guessing you had good weather there to spend half your day there? :>

botoni: sadly, i'm afraid i can't tell you it turned out to be inexpensive, sadly. so did you go out to meet friends or did you have them over in renovation central? er...someone "interesting"? details, please?

sis: will check out your post later, am running behind schedule. i hope you had a good time at the concert!

FG: yeah, i saw a blog entry you posted 2 (3?) days ago--holy crap but you've been busy!

Mine was OK as I am solo. Just potted around the house. Sorry to hear about your car problem. Cars and wives both can be unpredictable. Never know when they decide to play up.

  • botoni said on Aug 05, 2008....
heheehe Ed....you'll have to read about 'interesting' at the Botty Blog. How's that for shameless self promotion?
  • Zayda said on Aug 05, 2008....
so, what was wrong with the car?
  • Eilan said on Aug 05, 2008....
ed: I didn't mention my daughter's b-day. D'oh--bad mom! It went well. We celebrated after we got home. Pretty much every present was dinosaur-related.

BTW--back when my husband was a real man with a job, he could've removed those stumps with his teeth!! He's gotten soft.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 06, 2008....
scipio: fortunately, issues with my wife are a whole lot more predictable than issues with my car, i must say! :>

botoni: i'm working on getting there, man! :>

z: the issue was apparently a bad computer which had to be replaced. i'm not convinced they did a proper job in replacing it, considering that my odometer's been reset (electronic, not mechanical).

eilan: i'm glad that it went well! and heh, i rather expected you might say something like that--although i'll confess, i can't imagine mr. eilan having "gotten soft"... :D
