Almost a month to the day since I became ill in Iceland I developed the most severe rash that I have ever had.

On Wednesday last week at work it started.  A patch on my lower left leg and then on the inside sides of my feet and on the outside sides of my hands.  Tiny transparent blisters and itchy.

I didn't pay too much attention to it as I am prone to hayfever and eczema, but I knew that this was not eczema.  I applied some cortisone cream in the evening.  And could "deal with it" until the next day.

On Thursday at the office we moved the whole office around into a more suitable arrangement as we have a new member of staff.  Unfortunately the office where I work is not your typical "cushy" office. . .its at a bakery plant and it gets very dirty from all the delivery trucks that drive past our windows.  It was also full of dust. Yuk!

The itchiness increased on my feet to such an extent that it was under the soles and coming up on the outside sides as well.  The transparent blisters became red with inflamation and seriously itchy.  By evening it had spread all the way up my legs and onto my buttocks.  I had gone to the chemist to get anti-histamine tabs, but they just made me drowsy and did not touch the itch.

By Friday morning (after a night of not sleeping) I was starting to lose my mind.  I went to my GP but could only see a nurse.  She prescribed a cortisone cream and another anti-histamine.  Sadly, it did not have any great effect on what I was experiencing, but did offer a little bit of relief.

Anyway, yesterday (Saturday) was ok. . .I mean it was itchy, but I could resist scratching but by the evening all hell broke loose!!  It also started to spread to my back, tummy and onto my arms.  I decided to call the out of hours doctors and thankfully they said to come in. . .you cant just arrive there without having first spoken to a Dr.  It was so bad that I was scratching my legs and feet with hairbrush and was giving thought to carpet-burning myself. . .honest!

Anyway, I drove myself to the Dr and saw a very nice Indian woman who immediately diagnosed the rash as Photoallergic dermatitis known as "Sun Rash" or "Solar Dermatitis".  It can start anywhere on the body and is preventable by using high SPF sunscreen of at least 30.

I am now on a course of 6 steroid tablets to be taken for five days.  I have a thick moisturising gel to be applied and also an emolient bath addiditive to bathe in.  I must say that I am starting to feel better, but the rash on my legs is very ugly and still visible, but not near as red or as itchy.  I am still taking the anti-histamine, but more regularly.

Anyway, that has been what I've been dealing with, but I hope its been going much better with you all.

Drop me a line and tell me how you are!

That sounds pretty awful!  I had not heard of a rash like this from the sun just cropping up out of nowhere, but it scares me because of the "intollerance to the sun" thing I have going on.  (or any kind of heat actually)  Hope you will be rid of this soon, and know how to prevent it from coming back.

polar- The sun did this? Wow.

I feel for you and your itchy moments. I certainly hope what they prescribed takes care of it. Take care, dear girl, and come back when you can.

I'm sorry to hear about this :-( It actually sounds like Shingles. Because I know those produce little blisters too. A friend of mine had that and it was not fun for him. I've never heard of getting a rash like that from the sun! I hope it clears up and you feel better soon. You've just had a tough time of things lately!

Polarcakes, this happens to me if I spend too much time in the sun.  Not nearly as severe as yours ( and it sounds terrible! {{{hugs}}} ), but I remember that it did itch like crazy.

    You poor thing, you have really had a time of it the past month.  Hang in there, sweet pea.  I hope you are itch-free very soon.  {{{hugs}}}

Pollie......didn't know you lived in the Bahamas!

Trying to make you smile here....but ...seriously....i mean...its not like you have been sunbathing like a bacon on the grill, right?...
Pretty scary that a thing like this can happens even if one doesn't expose a lot to the sun.

I have a friend of mine in Italy who suffers the same things each summer... be careful about scratching.......it may leave you permanent scars on the skin.......

Sorry to read this......i was thinking... have your rash been maybe exacerbated by the meds you have recently taken after you got sick in Iceland?

    Wish a super fast healing.

Hi Polar - I am glad that you managed to get to the doc in time.I used to suffer with eczema and my mother had shingles once, and I know what she went through.I know that you didn't have it,but it sounds pretty close.
I really hope you plan on taking it easy for a couple of days and try to get as much rest as you can.You need to catch up on your snooze time.Any sleep you may have had up to now could not have been good.Get Well Soon
    Take care

Hi Polar... sorry to hear about the rash that you have. Maybe there was some kind of bug bite that started that? I remember getting sick as a dog after a fishing trip in South America....then a rash started on my skin but no itching thank God.
My skin started to turn red in blotches all over. Really weird along with the high fever and dizziness .
Hope you're feeling better...get well soon.

    Polar

Oh man, that sounds awful. I have had that type of blistering on my hands. It's an ongoing thing that happens when i do a lot of dishes. And, expecially if i use bleach. It itches like hell. Then i have to use the cort cream. Which helps thank God. Hot hot running water felt soooo good. Weird i know.  The dr. always sd it was the worst thing i could do. The burning felt good.         Take it easy and try not to scratch. I feel for you.

hey Polar: WOW. :(...  I am thinking some of the excess effect of sun on you could very well have been a combination of: sensitivity caused by meds for other illness (there are a lot that do that) and also.... being in the north: midnight sun and all_and I think this is even more for-surely present in Canada..but.. it is a "polar" problem ( a bit of a pun there... no- as in: literal.. the pole of the earth.. problem)... the hole in the ozone.. is worst in the springtime.. and when the very thin and filmy/ high clouds.. stratosphere... i believe.. are there... the hole is big and we who live in north are more susceptible to UV rays.

I had a moment of thinking "shingles" too... I just hope you are better soon.  does your ointment include an aloe vera? usually pretty good for rashes; if you are one who can use that sort of thing.  Hope you get some good rest.

Gordon Bennett polar!  You have been through the mill haven't you girl?!

It's kind of weird, but I was in the car with hubby yesterday on a bit of a day out and, for no reason i can think of, out of the blue, I suddenly thought - I must ask polar about the next part of her writing about the young woman who has returned to South Africa.  Strange uh?.  Then I come here to see how poorly you've been you poor thing.

Get lots of rest of no skipping on the meds.  I do hope it starts to go real soon.  It's so horrid having a irritating skin condition.  Drives you nuts!

hi polardoodle.. not fair that you are "out sick" the same time as skald gone with her computer problems!!  I have missed you both.  Now, the "mum" in me coming out... why did you wait so long??  (like with the other)!!!  I thought for sure that the Dr was going to say you had come down with chicken pox that you had gotten from your little tigger! I also break out like that from the sun now thanks to my medication for my diabetes.. in any case, I couldn't go in much sun now anyway... But, glad to hear you are well on the mend and out of the scratchy stage.  Hope it is not the flour at the plant making this happen!! egads!

Be warned, those sterroids...they can make people angry.  Mr. Daily has to take them when he gets poison ivy and he turns into a girl with pms!

Sorry to hear about the rash. It is so irritating specially when it happens during the summer season. glad to know that the illness was diagonized - and that treatment is in progress. At the moment I have a pain in the right wrist which at times is painful. Other than that - body clock ticking OK - at least so far !! Get well soon. May be you were looking prettty in your pictures - so you caught someone's evil eye...  That comment is in good humour.

  • silverwhisper said on Aug 06, 2008....
polar, how are you doing now? the only other thing i could think of was a possible allergic reaction to something in the air: is there some new equipment or delivery the plant started getting around 1 week ago?

    Polar,

I've been thinking about you and hoping you are doing better by now.  Itching is aggravating and doesn't allow one to be comfortable.  I have a friend who has had mega trouble with being allergic to copying chemicals.  She's the first person I've known to have that problem but we all have a different makeup.

Let us know whats happening with you.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and interest.

Again I am sorry for not giving individual replies. . .I know I am not worthy of you.  Sorry.

Just wanted to say that yesterday (Thurs) I noted a marked improvement in the rash and I did not have to take any anti-histamine as it was not itching anymore.  It is still a little visible but soooo much better.  I am really grateful as I was getting worried that I may never be able to wear a dress of skirt again! LOL!

Anyway, thanks again for being there for me.  I hope to do some catchin up on the weekend as MrP is working days.

    Much love to all!
