I recently read an essay Kevin Powell wrote in the Huffington Post entitled Open Letter to Congressman Ed Towns. He talks about his life, how he moved forward, and how he took responsibility for his past unsavory actions.
Kevin, Daren Kufere is in dire need of your counsel. I am sure you know him or know someone who knows him. Invite him to join the monthly Black male empowerment workshops at Brown Memorial Baptist Church in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Although you never talk about stealing from people, I believe he could benefit from your journey. Since you have unequivocally denounced thuggish behavior in black males.
He thinks it's ok to steal from, then lie to/about and finally threaten his victim not to talk about his misdeeds. Tell him that stealing is wrong, lying is wrong, threatening your victim is wrong. And then encourage him to do as you did - make things right with your victims.
As you've demonstrated in your own life, redemption is always possible. As you say the first step is to take responsibility for your actions. The next step is the make things right with your victim. And the last step is get professional help.
Maybe he will listen to you. Maybe he will be truthful about his actions with you. Too bad your book is finished. You could have used his behavior as an example ......
