I will be getting my own place in about a year, and was wondering if I should own a gun. Do you guys approve is disapprove. BTW, I live in L.A., so I might need it. But is a bat more than enough?

what are the gun control laws like in LA? obviously, that's something to take into consideration. if possible, look into a CCW (carry concealed weapon) permit: it's not like LA's the old west. my feelings re: gun ownership are discussed ||{1}||. :> ed

lol, totally didn't know you had talked about it, cool, I'll check your discussion on it. L.A. can't carry it, only inside house.

I think you should get some pepper spray, a dog, a good lock or two.Forget the gun. Especially if you don't know anything about them. Too often they are used against you in a crisis anyway.

Narb you live in LA and you dont own a gun already, Well than may I suggest you visit a gun shop and try several guns and find the one that you are comfortable with. Buying a gun is serious buissnes, You may have to use it one day to save your life. If you do buy a gun make shure you practice with it at least once a month at a shooting range. Who knows you may find hidden talent. Annie Oakly. Silvio.

I think an alarm would be better then a gun if you are trying to protect your home. After all, the average burglar will not target homes with alarms. Unless you have some other reasons, you should go for the alarm. Guns tend to complicate things. Maybe you won't even get the chance to use it if you home gets invaded.

As a primary or sole means of self-defense, I'd say a gun has several disadvantages: In order for you to protect yourself with it, you must have it available and ready for use at all times. That means carrying with you and having it near you when you sleep. In order for you to effectively protect yourself with it, you must train yourself in combat tactics - how to move through your home preferably in the dark, how to enter and clear a room, determine friend from foe, decide to shoot in one-tenth of a second, be willing to shoot and keep on shooting until your target is on the ground and not moving. If you are not willing to train and use your gun in this way, better to choose another tool. If I had a house I would create a layered defense with the firearm as the last line. Definitely get an alarm. Also consider some method of determining who is at the door without unlocking it. A chain on a wooden door will not hold back a swift kick. But this is just a start. I would study local crime statistics - what is the most likely threat? B&E / Burglary? Home invasion? Rape? Vandalism? What are the games they play? Kidnapping dogs and drawing residents away by telling them they've "found" their pets? Posing as some kind of maintenance person? Asking to use the phone and then busting in? Do these folks work in pairs, or teams of three or more? I would think that local police should be able to provide this kind of information. This will at least create an awareness of what situations will most likely evolve. I would get to know my neighbors. Communities would be so much safer if we all looked out for each other and stayed in contact. I would study all the possible entrance points to the property - gates, driveways, backyard. What kind of concealment do hedges afford a burglar? How much time does it take for the automatic garage door to close? How much visibility do your neighbors have to your house? Which companies have their vans and trucks through the neighborhood on a regular basis? What vans, trucks or cars seem out of place? I would study all possible entrance points to the home -front / back / cellar doors, ground floor windows, and harden them. I would arrange furniture around some of these entrance points, such as ground floor windows, to make it awkward for an intruder to maneuver around quietly. Noise will give you time to call the police and gather your family together. I would choose a room near the bedrooms with a second exit and have my family practice collapsing into it. You can barricade yourselves and cover the entrance with your firearm if you don't have time to escape. If left with no other alternative, resolve yourself to do what needs to be done. This person is in your home, threatening your family. Hopefully all these other layers will provide enough of a deterrent and means of coping with such a dire situation that it won't come to you having to kill someone. Best of luck.

There's an axiom attributed to a Russian playwright that says: "If you have a shotgun leaning in the corner in the first act, it better go off by the 3rd." I kinda' think that if you have the gun, the likelihood is high that you might use it. I believe everyone should have the right to defend themselves and their homes in an appropriate way, I just think it would be a little too easy to turn to deadly force when there might be a better option. I don't agree with guns. But then, I am in the UK where it is illegal to posess one. I think nothing good can come from owning a gun. As another poster said, go with other self-defence tools, such as pepper spray and a panic alarm. Put security measures on your house. I don't think a gun is a good idea at all.... PinkJellyBeans

It's better to have self defense when you need it than not to have it when you badly need it the most. Responsible gun ownership is the attiude one should adopt when carrying a gun for personal protection. Use it only to defend yourself and not to aggress.
