(Warning: this is the foul-mouthed rant of a pissed off preggo - comments I don't like will be heartlessly deleted; I'm so not in the mood)

[Before we knew we were moving into a house sooner than later, MIL and I bought a cheap basket of mixed flowers to put on my doorstep, so that our apartment wouldn't look like all the others.

A heat wave withered all the flowers in the pot except one variety I can't name. That small sprig took over the pot and began blooming furiously, much to my delight. My daughter was absolutely enraptured with those vibrant pink blossoms. Every day she wanted to be my helper and water them. She was always very careful to stop exactly when I told her, and she talked to the flowers like they were friends.

Today, when I went out with her (and the baby) to water them, I got a nasty surprise. Someone had kicked the shit out of the flowerpot, scattering flowers and dirt all across the sidewalk. The pot is damaged, and I don't know if I can save the flowers -- the majority were rootbound in the pot, so they kept a lot of the soil, but they had had goodness knows how long to fry in the almost 100-degree heat like that before I found them. They're inside now, in my peace lily's pot until I can spend the time to try to help them later tonight.]

So, to the bitter, ugly-hearted asshole who did this...are you so twisted and withered inside that you had to strike at any sliver of beauty you came across? Or do you get some sick, savage pleasure out of making three-year-olds cry because their flower friends are "hurt" and broken on the ground?

You are scum to me, and here's why. If you'd do it to a harmless plant, what's next? Small animals, perhaps, and then small children? Those leaps are not as large as you think. Studies have shown that people who'd hurt animals often move on to people. It seems to me that plants are one step below animals but that it'd be an easy leap to make for someone with little regard for life in all its forms.

Get some help anger-management style, you fucking bastard (or bitch if that's more appropriate). :-p If you have to stoop so low as to -- but wait...nah, I guess the flowers were pretty close to your level anyway, huh? Leave my plants alone. You're pathetic.

(I'm so glad we're moving at the end of the month!)

If you find them, give them a kick in the ass for me too!!!  That is such a stoopid thing to do, not to mention mean.   I'm sorry your baby girl had to be exposed to that mean hearted act.

Well now I know why you were upset earlier. I'm sorry about your flowers. Some people just have nothing better to do with their time than to destroy someone else's property.

I always feel bad after Halloween when I see all the smashed pumpkins in the road. Because some kid was probably really proud of their masterpiece and some idiot came along and smashed it.

I'm sorry your daughter cried over it. I hope you can save what's left of the flowers.

I can't even begin to imagine why anyone would do that.....and I am glad you are moving soon!

Infernal - That's just awful.  I can see why your little one was sad.  It is frustrating to think that someone could be so deliberately destructive.

But wait - did you say you are preggers?!  That is wonderful!  I must have missed something along the way.  Congratulations - Wishy

infernal, i don't believe i've ever seen you employ vulgarities before, more than sufficient evidence in its own right not of your anger, but of how utterly offensive that was.

as you say: you're moving soon and will hopefully be free of such lunacy, my friend. remember, focus on the positive?

What a contemptible thing to do!  I truly do not understand what motivates someone to be so vicious and destructive.  I'm sorry this worthless excuse for a human being made your daughter cry.  I hope some of the flowers can be salvaged.

  • hotaka said on Aug 02, 2008....
It's one of the things that I hate about my home country. Usually teenagers think it's really cool and so fucking unbelievably classy to go around and smash people's stuff. Mailboxes, flower pots, garden ornaments, cars, fences, you name it, they wreck it. One thing I really appreciate about living here is that many homes put flower boxes and ornaments right out to the street where anyone could grab them or break them but I have never seen a problem with that. Maybe it happens now and again but it must be rare since so many people still put stuff out. What's wrong with western teens? Too much free time? Not enough school?
  • botoni said on Aug 02, 2008....

Personally I'd like to treat the SOB that did that exactly the way he/she treated your  plant.  No good would come of that either though so I'll just wish heaps of bad karma on the jerk.  It's great that your moving and I hope you'll find the new place much sweeter.

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Aug 02, 2008....
Thank you all for humoring me in my ill-tempered ranting. ;-) It really did make my blood boil because there was just no reason to do such a thing.

I think we've salvaged the main section of flowers...they look a little sick, but we'll see what happens with some time and care.

(Yes, I am pregnant, wishy and Polar. You read that right!)

infernal- I understand your anger over this senseless destruction. I agree with hotaka, I think teenagers did it.
  • RollingC said on Aug 02, 2008....
I don't believe that whoever did that, probably a prankster kid I think, had a full idea of what he was doing.  I'm sorry this happened to you as I know I'd be plenty pissed if it was me. Some years ago someone ran over my neighbors mailbox twice in a period of 3 months.
These pranks of mailbox bashing and the like is a behavior that is treated with a shrug and the attitude that it's a phase that the kids will get over.  It should be treated more seriously by all adults concerned.
Hope that everything works out for the better in your new house.

That's a really shitty thing to do!  Some people are heartless and careless and have absolutely NO regard for other people's feelings or property.

    I hate people like that!
I hope you can find them and smash a ceramic flower pot in his/hers/their head!

  • day2day said on Aug 02, 2008....

It was probably a punk kid in the neighborhood.  He probably didn't know what he was really doing, besides kicking over a pretty pot of flowers. But, he'll get caught some day. Hopefully.

First of all "CONGRATULATIONS" on being preggo!!

Not sure if I'm being overly emotional after visiting the War Museum today (always does that to me) but when I thought of your little girl crying cos her 'flower firends' were hurt, I bawled, honest I did.  I remember thinking like that when I was just a little nipper.   I hope she never changes :-)

Now I am not the most patient person to those who know me (yeah - I hear ya - understatement!) and, yes, I'm afraid my vocal chords have been known to spout a few expletives but I think these days these things are not done so much with malice, more with no thought at all.  they honestly don't even think they are doing anything that wrong.  i think that is more frightening sometimes. . . .

I really hope that those little flowery fellas make it.  With lots of TLC from your little girl, I think they have a more than a fighting chance :-)

When I was five I liked to tag along with my older sister and her friends (6 young adults between 12 and 13 years old). Between our apartment and the next house over was a large lot. Once day the group got to talking about how they hated the woman in the house and how we should get even. I will admit I was not the birghtest of 5 years olds, and very desperately wanted my older sister's approval. So when my older sister, backed by her friends, took me up to the woman's house where her window was open and told me I should shove all the plants in, I did. I'm sure the pots made a horrible noise when breaking. I don't remember running home. But I do remember the woman showing up at the door to confront my parents about my behavior. As it turned out my older sister and her friends had tattled on me to the woman. When my parents asked me why I'd do something like that I told them what the girls had said to get me to do their dirty work: the woman was going to other people's homes and pushing their plants out of their windows. My punishement was to go over to the woman's house and help her pick up the plants and clean up the soil. I don't know if the woman ever thinks about what happened or if she ever logic'd out how it came to be. But if I were to see her today I would apologize all over again. Sammie

Some stay at all costs. Some say that they are working it through. But when parents are arguing and fighting all of the time. When they live in two seperate worlds under the same roof, what do you think the fallout is for the children if they stay together...
How do you handle parenting when the parents don't agree.
