What if I were lost for an instant or two,
In the wink of an electron's eye
Since we are wiggly bits of energy
That leap in and out of quantum lives
As physics tells us we all must be,
Would anyone notice? Would I even know?

What if I were lost for a minute or two,
In the time it takes to compose
A coherent thought, as often happens
When I'm lost to the world
In the midst of a meeting or
Through a sudden signal drop
Would anyone there or anywhere
Notice or even care?

What if I were lost for an hour or two,
In the time it takes to sketch
A gamin playing on the river quay,
Or in parties where I'd rather sneak
To the library for a book
And later with methodical haste
Beat deadlines with minutes to spare
Would anyone here or anywhere
Complain or notice or even care?

What if I were lost for a day or two,
In the time it takes to stock on wood,
As happens in a hermit's hut,
For a bonfire night to contemplate
The zen of nothingness.
Would anyone here or anywhere
Worry, complain, notice, or even care?

What if I were lost for a month or two,
In the time it takes to build a village well
Or to watch the grain in the field turn gold
Or to memorize my tribe's ancestral names
Would anyone here or anywhere
Search, worry, complain, notice, or even care?

What if I were lost for a year or two,
In the time it takes to cross a continent
And to write a book in manuscript
And to dream of settling down for good
Would anyone here or anywhere
Trace my route or join my schemes,
Or worry, complain, notice, or even care?

What if I were lost for an eternity,
As I remind myself
We all are meant to be
But if by fate I go before you do,
Would you, or anyone here or anywhere,
Recall that once my breath was warm?
And would you know the voice that calls
When I greet you from the other side?

Note: I'm reposting this poem from a year and a half ago, as my "till we meet again" message to all my friends here at Soulcast. It's my all-time favorite, it captures my current travel mood, and hey, the garbage crew said for us to recycle, right?

If you haven't seen the original posting with the earlier comments, here it is.

So, my friends, this isn't a goodbye. Just a quick c u l8r, alig8r.

Love this, Moon - perfect blend of my beloved science and spirituality.  I happen to think it is possible to go missing from time to time, maybe even desireable - to escape from our thoughts into the space between the spaces.

    Thanks for sharing  - Wishy

a quick one-liner to everyone: i'm back, i'm excited to be blogging again, and i missed you all. terribly.

just let me finish my morning routines...  :-)

  • TinSoldier said on Aug 25, 2008....
    moon! Welcome back!

I look forward to hearing from you again.
  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
tinsoldier -- Thanks for watching this space, my friend. For being the first to welcome me back, you are hereby the recipient of my first info tidbit: contrary to persistent rumors (LOL), I wasn't able to attend the Beijing Games. I was in a rural territory doing other kinds of sports... :-)

memyself -- Thanks for checking on me, my friend. "I once was lost, but now, I'm found." But aint no assurance I'll get myself lost again. I'll catch up on your blog later. See ya... :-)

rollingc -- Yup, my friend, I did have a good trip. Although I missed Soulcast every day of it. I brought along a camera, and like you said, I'll try to post some pics after I do some classifying and declassifying. Ya know... :-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
lucy -- Thanks for the reminder about the moon, my friend. I'm always well aware of the moon's phases when I go on rural field work. In villages without electricity, moonlight is most helpful. But where I was, most nights were always covered by cloud and mist. That's info tidbit #3. I did no howling this time, except in my mind... :-)

wombat -- Thanks for the kind words, my friend. I missed you too, and all my other friends here at Sc.

beyond -- Yup, my friend, I sure had lots of fun (despite the physical hardships, which is part of the game... :-) And yes, my smiling keypad is very busy again. Not that my smiley was ever idle, because I was never really totally offline, just had highly restricted online access. That's info tidbit #4... :-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
oh, btw, to my friends who sent me short and sweet notes in private -- thank you very very much x 1,000. you know who you are... :-)

i've been reading them since last night, and will reply to each one of them later today.

  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
ed -- Ok, my friend, I'll make an explicit explanation this time. During my first week here at Sc, I noticed the sample tags "New York, dating, vegetarian" and wrote a whimsical blog about it. Since then, I always used these three tags whenever I wrote a blog that I really didn't want to be taken seriously, or whenever I wanted to mask how I really felt about the topic on hand. Sometimes I'm such an insufferable Zippyhead, I admit. Lol.

brit -- Hey, emoticon girl, how ya been? Back in school for the fall semester, I'm sure. Any new list-format blogs for me? ;-)

OscarB -- Thanks. I haven't had enough time to visit your blog before I disappeared for a month. Now I'm back with a vengeance... :-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
hotman - Lol. Always a witty comment there, dude... :-) That's a nice scenario you painted. Methinks I'm gonna do as you said: cross a continent in a quantum leap while skipping out on a meeting so I can write a book to meet my deadline haha. Hey I took a quick peek at your latest blogs. Spectacular pics of spectacular climbs, friend. I'm sooo envious... :-)

woman -- Thanks for the kind words. I haven't had the chance to really read up on your blogs. I hope to catch up soon... :-)

infernal -- I missed you too, my friend. Hey, here's info tidbit #5. Once during a long hike my group got caught in a terrible storm. I took some pics, even a crappy video, and wrote a poem too, about "red flowers in the storm." I see you're just about ready to move to your new house. Good luck, and don't forget to bring along that survivor flower... ;-)

  • Lucytorial said on Aug 25, 2008....
In one day gone the next, who can keep up with you! glad to see you back and well.  I do detect a slight grin in your writing.  Hope to touch base with you again soon
  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
hey lucy -- You detect a *slight grin* in my writing? Ah, but that is just the mask I wear nowadays, my friend. Did you read my latest blog posted about an hour ago? That, too, is a mask. Or call it a facet. One of many I wear for the right occasion.

phie -- Many bloggers here have actually written about this topic, the subjective feeling of being alone even when one is in the midst of a crowd, for example. I'm glad the poem made sense to you. and thanks for dropping by .. :-)

fearing -- Don't be too sad, my friend. We all have to cope with these goodbyes, these changes. Here's a nice little ((hug)) for you. Hey, I admit having missed ((hugs)) here and there too haha. But yes, I'm back whether you like it or not... :-)

quietone -- Do I have your permission to pout a bit in your direction? You said, "I will be here waiting for the wonderful stories you have to tell." And now that I'm back here, I find from your blog that you're going away... :-(

But I know you will be back. "Dream good dreams and remember we are here," you say. So quick! Visit my latest post about dreams! Lol.

  • hotaka said on Aug 25, 2008....
Good to see you back again, dude.
  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
Same here, hotman dude... :-) Just give me a bit more time to adjust my mindset, and I'll wade into your mountain-climbing blogs with a magnifying glass. Lol... sorry for my mixed metaphors... I'm not really me today, haha.

  • moonriver said on Aug 25, 2008....
wishy -- I'm glad you liked the blend of science and spirituality. From the microcosm to the macrocosm. I see you've been blogging a lot, too. I'm reading through some of them right now. Thanks for dropping by... :-)

destiny -- Where are those "harassing PM's"? I seem to have lost them...? Oh, there they are. Lol. But I promise you won't miss my charm any longer. Why? Because I lost it too! Hahaha. C u l8r alig8r... :-)

lionesss -- Thanks for the kind words. I did have a nice trip. Errr... are you and lioness (with two S's) the same blogger?

queenieeeeeee -- Hey lady how you been? I'm reading some of your more recent blogs now. you are so sweet, putting out an all-points bulletin to trace this soulcast fugitive... :-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 26, 2008....
newbeginnings -- Exactly. Oh to be given even just a year to do what you wanna do, to go where you wanna go, to be what you wanna be. I hope you're pursuing your own path, just behind me ... :-) Thanks for dropping by, I'll go visit your blog now.

zane -- Thanks for the nice words. I took a quick peek at your recent blogs, and man.... you're into something I can't pretend to understand, but take good care of your heart, my friend, and good luck to you. You'll need it... *wink*

monkeyboy -- Hey, thanks for the virtual gift, dude. How ya been?

  • moonriver said on Aug 26, 2008....
backspace -- Hey, lady, I just subscribed to you, and I'm reading your posts with interest. You ask in your latest post, "I need to find something fun to do at night. Do you have any ideas?" I have a suggestion: find someone to chat with online, someone who can weave your wildest fantasies without you leaving your seat hahaha. Caveat emptor, though... it's a Pandora's Box out there... :-)

secret -- Ah my friend. My very first friend here at Soulcast, for whom I have the highest regard. When I first posted this poem on January 16 last year, you were the very first to comment, and your comment touched my heart in a way I had never imagined. What would I do, where would I be without you, dear lady? Now go and dream of a big-sky vacation in Montana. I know you yourself need to get lost for a while... *wink*

    busy poet --
    dear you,
I would have "flown down to mexico" like paul simon wrote, if i were in the u.s.
but fate would have it that i'm in distant asia.
so probably i'll "fly away to guangxi" if i had wings strong enough. or money enough.
i hope you too are back where you belong, my friend.
    love, anonymous... :-)

  • sehnen said on Sep 29, 2008....
sept 29 -- what if you WERE lost? the planet would keep turning. just as it will keep turning when i am gone. there would be new mafias, and new FBI's, and my death on the hook and your acting performances would be miniscule footnotes in some history of the mafia in the u.s. somewhere, and what REALLY mattered about either one of us, what was REALLY valuable about either one of us, will be as lost as lost can be. find yourself a person with whom acceptability operates. it doesn't operate here. i'm unacceptable to you, you're unacceptable to me, and that fact makes any other feelings either one of us may have irrelevant.
  • moonriver said on Oct 02, 2008....
secret -- wow, it's been more than a month since i replied to comments on this blog. i'm doing well, my friend. back to my old home city for a short visit, following up some important papers, spending some time with my kids, and fitting in a nice date with sophie too ;-)

you always have the kindest soothing words, my friend. thank you for being here.

queenie -- well, what can i say but, this incorrigible fire monkey is back to nag and ride everyone's back!

lionesss -- 'english lionesss' evokes a mighty image in my mind. i rather like it. thanks for the comment, english lionesss :-)

sehnen -- you are wading into a deep philosophical pool here, my friend. that's ok, hundreds of philosophers have waded, taken daily baths, swum across from end to end, some even drowned, in this pool. i will keep reading your comments, and try to make sense of them without prejudgment. epistemology isn't my field of expertise, but i'll try to keep your remarks in mind whenever i dabble my feet on the same pool. please accept this reply without reading any hint of sarcasm in it. i want to better understand your point of view, that's all.
