In general, the 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster is a very good car. The BMW 2.8 litre straight 6 is a reliable torquey engine which delivers on command. Practicality is limited (but hey, it is a 2 seater sports car). Service from my local BMW dealer was exemplary, prompt, courteous, I couldn't fault them. All gadgetery present although the estimated miles left on your current tank of petrol was wildly inaccurate! Pretty good MPGs for a 2.8 straight 6 though. Traction/anti-skid control was pretty good but detracted from a true driving experience. You could switch it off, but after getting used to it, it got a bit scarey switching it off!( HOWARD WILNER news)

HOWARD WILNER cars stories => In the twenty year's I've owned it,the 1983 BMW 5 Series 528e, it has never let me down. It always starts, even at minus 40 without being plugged in. It's not the fastest car, but still easily runs at over 185km/hr (115mph), and is rock solid on the road. The most amazing thing - 860,000kms (approx 535,000 miles) - and with very little maintenance. In the life of the car I have replace the front brakes three times, the rear brakes twice (although it's just about time to do them again). It has worn out only one alternator, fuel pump, water pump and exhaust in it's life! Other than changing the oil religiously, and the timing belt every 100,000kms - it hasn't required much maintenance. I have never heard of any other gas powered car come close to this kind of mileage! Treat one right - and it will repay you 100 times over!

Fuel economy is surprisingly good- 12.7L/100km mixed driving for the 2001 Audi S4 Avant. (And I'm certainly not the most timid of drivers). It is much more economical than my old Impreza STi, which would average around 18L/100km.It's such a shame that the Audi dealer spoiled what should have been a pleasurable car-buying experience.

The 1965 Autocars Sussita had a Ford Anglia engine and transmission. Suspension was leaf springs all-around, live axle at the rear, dead at the front. Everything else was very simple, too. Those components proved reliable, unlike Triumph components of later models. I had no mechanical problems with the car. A relative of mine drove such a car until the 90's, with very few problems.

I too am building a Spartan. When I bought it in 1990, it was one of three kits that had been shipped out by an entrepeneur hoping to make money. He didn't, and I got it cheap. It was nearly finished using Cortina mechanicals, but my best mate suggested we upgrade it (5 years ago) and the build has been tres slow. But then again we have replaced the Cortina motor with a 2.7 fuel injected Toyota Hilux motor, Lexcen steering gear and removed the fibreglass light shells from the wings. Build is stalled due to lack of time.

On 23 June, the Mgane R26.R established a new lap record for a front wheel drive production car of the Nrburgring circuit with a time of just 8 minutes 17 seconds. To commemorate this exceptional level of performance, the circuit outline and lap time is etched into the rear side windows.

Honestly, you should have talked to someone who was a manager. Ford and most other car companies are REQUIRED by law to fix all recalls at their own expense. Also, the Ford Taurus wagon was an awesome car for its time. The few problems you were having were general maintenance problems. As for the power steering cables, what you do is go and find quality aftermarket parts. Never get parts from the dealer. They're more expensive, and guaranteed to crap out after warranty.

First introduced in 1964, the Ford Mustang has risen to become a true American icon. According to Forbes, "Few cars embody all-American rugged individualism like the Ford Mustang." World renowned for its brawny presence and threatening snarl, the Mustang receives accolades for its muscle car street performance, but loses points in overall refinement. With the era of large V8s quickly dying out, vehicles like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Nissan 350Z easily outrank the Mustang in terms of performance. Still, it remains the primary choice of most classic car enthusiasts, and earns awards for both quality and ownership cost.

"Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! This car is one big hoot, and it's instructive to get into a rear-drive, V8-powered bad-ass every once in a while. It's a good reminder of how fun driving can be." -- AutoWeek and Howard Wilner

While some people really do become terrifying drivers as they age, the goal of most of them is to stay safe and comfortable while keeping their independence as long as possible. This is where the children of aging drivers come in: They can help steer their parents toward vehicles with features that work best for the physical and mental changes that age brings them.

Enzo Ferrari famously said that convertibles were for playboys -- serious drivers go for coupes. With the Cayman, the fixed-roof version of its successful Boxster roadster, Porsche has opened a door for serious drivers to enjoy the storied brand at an entry-level (for Porsche) price. Like the Boxster, the Cayman features a mid-mounted engine, which allows for almost perfect balance. That balance, combined with the hard-top's more rigid structure, makes the Cayman a hot performer that some test drivers believe even rivals the Porsche 911. According to Automobile Magazine, it's "everything the 911 has not been for most of its career: confidence-inspiring, super-stable, totally balanced, quite forgiving, a gifted storyteller that is equally good at listening."
