HOWARD WILNER automotive shoping tips
Being a German car,the 1984 BMW 5 Series 533i, with high mileage to begin with, I was concerned from the beginning about it not costing me a fortune to maintain. My strategy generally has been to source parts from two trusted local BMW wreckers ("recyclers"). Their deal has been, "here's the part off an old vehicle in our wrecking yard (at about 1/4 of the cost of an a new aftermarket part) if it breaks down, bring it back and we'll give you another = no additional charge. I generally have ignored the concept of regular maintenance, with exception of oil changes which I have done myself very regularly. Beyond this I have had a private mechanic who has come over to my place at $40 per hr. to work on things that have needed attention.( HOWARD WILNER advice)

When I bought this car the 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GL in 1999 it was in mint condition, hardly used vehicle. The owner sold it after realizing they won't use it as they had a bunch of pick ups for their business needs. First thing to go were the door locks. Both of them broke off and were replaced for 100$ by the dealer. Few months later the air conditioning failed, was fixed by a non dealer shop. 2 Months later it died again, was fixed by the dealer. 1 Month later air conditioning failed again.. "compressor is done for" was the evaluation. Repair estimate at 1200$; I never repaired it. For the next year there were no problems other than general screeching/rattling noises coming from the doors and side panels. In late 2001 early 2002 things started falling apart.
the 1987 Oldsmobile Bravada was in great shape we took it on the road and were stranded in Utah where the engine began to knock. 3 Certified mechanics indicated that we had a bad piston rod. Cost for repair was $4,850. We were so afraid of the vehicle at that point we sold it to the dealer for $1,500, after paying $8,900 for it which did not include the added cost for repairs.

The latest standard Corvette has more of that on tap than ever before, thanks to its new 6.2-liter LS3 V-8: 430 horsepower versus a mere 400 for the previous Vette. Over the course of its past six years as a 10Best Car, weve called the Corvette one of the worlds best high-performance buys, an assertion that continues to be true. Now even more so.

Fuel economy is surprisingly good- 12.7L/100km mixed driving for the 2001 Audi S4 Avant. (And I'm certainly not the most timid of drivers). It is much more economical than my old Impreza STi, which would average around 18L/100km.It's such a shame that the Audi dealer spoiled what should have been a pleasurable car-buying experience.( HOWARD WILNER various vehicles)

Enzo Ferrari famously said that convertibles were for playboys -- serious drivers go for coupes. With the Cayman, the fixed-roof version of its successful Boxster roadster, Porsche has opened a door for serious drivers to enjoy the storied brand at an entry-level (for Porsche) price. Like the Boxster, the Cayman features a mid-mounted engine, which allows for almost perfect balance. That balance, combined with the hard-top's more rigid structure, makes the Cayman a hot performer that some test drivers believe even rivals the Porsche 911. According to Automobile Magazine, it's "everything the 911 has not been for most of its career: confidence-inspiring, super-stable, totally balanced, quite forgiving, a gifted storyteller that is equally good at listening."

HOWARD WILNER various vehicles => First introduced in 1964, the Ford Mustang has risen to become a true American icon. According to Forbes, "Few cars embody all-American rugged individualism like the Ford Mustang." World renowned for its brawny presence and threatening snarl, the Mustang receives accolades for its muscle car street performance, but loses points in overall refinement. With the era of large V8s quickly dying out, vehicles like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Nissan 350Z easily outrank the Mustang in terms of performance. Still, it remains the primary choice of most classic car enthusiasts, and earns awards for both quality and ownership cost.
The 1965 Autocars Sussita had a Ford Anglia engine and transmission. Suspension was leaf springs all-around, live axle at the rear, dead at the front. Everything else was very simple, too. Those components proved reliable, unlike Triumph components of later models. I had no mechanical problems with the car. A relative of mine drove such a car until the 90's, with very few problems.

Mazda used the intervening time well, substituting Fords new 3.7-liter V-6 for the previous 3.5-liter, gaining 10 horsepower (to 273), 21 pound-meter of torque and about a half-second across the board in acceleration: 0-to-60 mph in 7.3, the quarter-mile in 15.7 at 91 mph. Honestly, you should have talked to someone who was a manager. Ford and most other car companies are REQUIRED by law to fix all recalls at their own expense. Also, the Ford Taurus wagon was an awesome car for its time. The few problems you were having were general maintenance problems. As for the power steering cables, what you do is go and find quality aftermarket parts. Never get parts from the dealer. They're more expensive, and guaranteed to crap out after warranty.
I thought my dad's old 86 Audi Coupe was fun, but this S4 is the greatest sports car I've ever driven. In tight fast turns you can feel exactly where the wheels are and how well they're gripping. That may sound normal, but this car feels completely different than anything else . Very comfortable seats, front and back. Nice instrument panel and sound system.

What things have gone wrong with the 1997 Jeep Wrangler? My check engine light came on three weeks ago. While driving on freeway, the engine began to sputter and I changed gears to regain speed. After exit off freeway, the engine sputtered and I changed gears to gain speed. After one mile, sputtering continue, loss of acceleration and check gauges light came on. I drove home with the engine speed of 4-5 miles per hour, although the pedal was floored. Have no clues.. Any comments? This is 1997 Jeep Wrangler.

The 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster M is a bit shaky on bumpy roads, but this is more down to the bigger wheels than body rigidity. not as stiff as my previous MX5 but the mazda had a frustrating surplus of grip over power. it had a decent 146hp, but only 125lbs of torque which led to a fare share of abandoned overtaking attempts on b roads. still a great car though. It was embarassing how easily I beat a boy racer in his tinny Mini Cooper S with a mere 163hp and a laughable 155lbs of torque.
