We went to a movie last night. Hell Boy II. It was okay, I was not overwhelmed with it. It was pretty much what I expected. I didn't pick the movie, so if given that choice I'd have seen something else.
So, trying to be thrifty I had made a score on theater size boxes of candy at one of my favorite stores. The dollar store. It's long been a gripe of mine that theaters charge truly outrageous prices for so-so foods. I was able to pick up 4-5 different boxes of candy for what it likely would have cost me for one box at the theater. Sweettarts, Skittles, Smarties, and Sprees. (Hmm, never noticed that they all start with S) I steered clear of candy with nuts or fruit since dollar stores don't always have fresh stock.
We each put together our "sugar bags" in little sandwich bags before we left the house. I tucked them into my purse and we avoided the urge to buy a hot dog by having dinner before we left. I was feeling pretty good about this tactic. I even liked the fact that because we had picked up the candy ahead of time we had a variety of things to snack on during the movie.
When we got there we decided to all split one of those large sodas. You need something to drink with all that sugar. Bill bought the drink, but we both got really round eyes when they rang it up. $4.50 for one large Coke. WTF!!! I'm sure it's always cost that or close to that. Probably the only reason we noticed was that we had focused on saving money with the candy.
Next time I'm gonna load up my gramma purse and carry sodas or other drinks, candy and probably pop corn if that's on our personal menu. I don't care if I look cheap. When 3 people go to the movies it shouldn't cost them over $50 for tickets and a few snacks.
The thing that really knocked this sad reality home was that on the drive home I saw that gas prices ($4.37 for a gallon) were cheaper than Coke prices (for much less). It's a sad day when a soda cost more than a gallon of gas.
