We went to a movie last night.  Hell Boy II.  It was okay, I was not overwhelmed with it.  It was pretty much what I expected.  I didn't pick the movie, so if given that choice I'd have seen something else.

So, trying to be thrifty I had made a score on theater size boxes of candy at one of my favorite stores.  The dollar store.  It's long been a gripe of mine that theaters charge truly outrageous prices for so-so foods.  I was able to pick up 4-5 different boxes of candy for what it likely would have cost me for one box at the theater.  Sweettarts, Skittles, Smarties, and Sprees. (Hmm, never noticed that they all start with S)  I steered clear of candy with nuts or fruit since dollar stores don't always have fresh stock.

We each put together our "sugar bags" in little sandwich bags before we left the house.  I tucked them into my purse and we avoided the urge to buy a hot dog by having dinner before we left.  I was feeling pretty good about this tactic.  I even liked the fact that because we had picked up the candy ahead of time we had a variety of things to snack on during the movie.

When we got there we decided to all split one of those large sodas.  You need something to drink with all that sugar.  Bill bought the drink, but we both got really round eyes when they rang it up.  $4.50 for one large Coke.  WTF!!!  I'm sure it's always cost that or close to that.  Probably the only reason we noticed was that we had focused on saving money with the candy.

Next time I'm gonna load up my gramma purse and carry sodas or other drinks, candy and probably pop corn if that's on our personal menu.  I don't care if I look cheap.  When 3 people go to the movies it shouldn't cost them over $50 for tickets and a few snacks.

The thing that really knocked this sad reality home was that on the drive home I saw that gas prices ($4.37 for a gallon) were cheaper than Coke prices (for much less).  It's a sad day when a soda cost more than a gallon of gas.

sad day indeed.  I go to blockbuster and pay 4.59 for a rental and eat all the popcorn I want at home with all the soda I want as well.  Pluse the comfort of my recliner and the volume where I want it!  Much better... even if I have to wait to see a "new" release for about a month and a half.... I am cheap like that too!!  $4.37 wow.... we are now at a record low of $3.93 of last night!

You know, I never thought of it that way! Soda does cost more than gas, and yet I never noticed that. A large Coke at the movie theater here is $5.25. And I know this, because we went there yesterday too! And full price admission is $12 a person. Blah. This is why we almost never go to the movies unless we REALLY want to see something. DVD's are cheaper and so is microwave popcorn and a six pack of Pepsi from the store :-P

Just back from the movies, the ticket cost £7.50 and I am too tight to buy any popcorn! but I think it cost £4.00 a medium box.... I took a bottle of water and an apple...sad huh? Petrol is now £1.30 per litre...pepsi/coke is more expensive(:, maybe I could run my car on water?

quietone - and that $4.37 was really cheap.  Last week the cheap places were $4.51.  I'm all for DVD movies, but until I'm truly independant I feel like I should compromise.

ET - Owww!  You're in an even more expensive area.  I can see how that makes DVD and home food attractive.  I love the On Demand feature of our cable.  The movies are newer and same home food perks.

new - wouldn't that be a shock to the people milking the life out of us if we went to water power.  I can hardly wait.

You would think they would try to bring in bigger crowds since everyone is penny pinching just trying to make it.

Last time I went to the movies we were one of three groups seeing the movie. When I have to work more hours than the movie is going to entertain me for, I really start to question the whole thing. Why not just save my money for that home theater I have always wanted. One movie savings a week and I could have it in no time.

That's not to mention that it was fountain water, ice...and a lil shot of syrup, not even the real McCoy (factory bottled name brand) in a sterile plastic or can  container ?  Even the cups probably were of recycled matter as well.

Last time I sat in a cinema I didn't get to sit where I would have wanted and someone behind us kept cutting the cheese (no special effects there....it stunk).

Another thing thats a big rip off....Milk !  You can buy the cow cheaper than her milk now.  Thats right a cut of prime beef cost less than a gallon of milk.  And buying either out rather than getting it from the fridge shows why cable and ppv's are my vice of choice not to mention home cooking....all much more reasonable.

The magic of the movie house is lost at the ticket counter and turns good women into smugglers, UI is but a victim trying to survive beyond the lobby and into the darkened rows of skulls.....

queenie - I know!! I don't know why it hasn't bothered me more before now.

cricket - when my son is visiting too and we all see a movie and have dinner it pretty much wipes out any discretionary money I have.  I'm sure a few visits like that saved could buy a pretty nice home theater system.

Jess - I really don't feel badly about smuggling food in.  The people who run the theaters have to be making a nice chunk of change by overcharging at the counter and the concessions all while paying their employees minimum wage.

This is why when the 5 of us (me, parents, moms parents) go to dinner, we only go once a month.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 29, 2008....
one wired - I totally understand that.  Admittedly I rarely go out to dinner when the kids are with me.  The cost of 4 is much more than just 2.  I have even, when dining with my daughter, split a meal since restaurant portions are large.

honestly, the economics of movie theaters sucks. they don't make money on films until they've been running for a month or so, i believe, which means they can't make money on anything but concessions in the vast majority of cases.

Here ... if me, my parents and my mom's parents all go to a matinee

    me + mom+dad = 3 x 7.50 = 22.50

    grandma + grandpa = 2 x 7.00 = 14.00

    22.50 + 14.00 = $36.50

    $36.50 for tickets + $10.50 for TWO drinks = $47.00

    That's just a MATINEE ...

REGULAR ticket price for adults is $9.50 (still $7 for seniors).
