I don't write much and haven't lately due to mitigating circumstances in my life and also the fact that there are so many people here that are much more talented than me.  So I've mostly done a lot (in as much as I could) of reading and commenting on other people's blogs.
Since I've become separated (wife left) and I've become a single person again paying all the bills I've had to come up with ways to spend less money and/or make my paycheck stretch out enough to cover all the bills.
I've learned several tricks that probably most of you know already such as not paying the bills all at once like I used to and start planning ahead (setting up a schedule) with the mailing of the checks for the utilities and other expenses....you know, there's not enough money now but by the time the check gets there payday comes rolling around (I have direct deposit) and the check is covered by the time it gets deposited. I actually got a hardcover school notebook (cheaper than an accounting one), drew some lines and listed the bills by arrival date, amount and mailing date and so far it's working out just fine.  A few tight weeks every once in awhile and no going out to dinner but I can squeeze in a movie now and then on payday.
But that wasn't enough and thanks to a lot of praying there's a light at the end of the tunnel as I'm renting the extra room to someone I've known for several years....so it's not like I'm renting to a stranger. But that wasn't enough either as I want a little economical safety net also. Meaning I'll be getting a part time job for awhile and saving up money for next year 'cause I want to go on vacation out of the country. Haven't been out of the country in a very long time and it's about time I did.
Moreover I started thinking about how else to save money and I got the bright idea of using Google to find out.  Much to my surprise a ton of information came up on how to be frugal with your daily expenses.
The most surprising was VINEGAR.  Yep...that's right, VINEGAR.
Vinegar can be used in cooking (which is really what interested me to begin with).
Vinegar can also be used for a variety of things from cooking to cleaning and keeping the weeds from growing between the cracks on your driveway.
What really surprised me was that it can be used to enhance your cleaning liquids when you do the laundry. I was so intrigued that I just tried it today and to my pleasant surprise it worked just like it said in the internet (well almost ok?).  I used it with the laundry and it did make the colors seem brighter a bit. The claim was also that using it in the rinse cycle cuts down on the lint that's stuck to your clothes.
On my first wash I did some shirts and underwear and later I took out the shirts and dried them and they came out perfect.

By the way...why is it that when you do shirts on the dryer one of the sleeves always comes out inside out? That's a strange discovery that I've made since I started doing the wash.

But I digress...on the second wash I put in all the towels I could find in both bathrooms and that been lying around, finding out that I'd left the underwear in the washing machine without putting them in the drier.  So I do the wash and when it's over I put everything in the drier and couldn't help but notice that there was a ton of lint stuck to all my underwear.
After the drier is done I start taking out and folding the clothes and to my pleasant surprise there wasn't any lint on the underwear....The article was right.   There was lint in one of my sweater type cotton and polyester though so I guess it works if it's cotton only.

I found out a bunch of money saving tips....some I knew and some I didn't....and I'll be sure to be trying them out to see how well they work.

For example: When doing the wash make sure that the last spin cycle is done twice thereby getting more moisture out of your clothes so it takes the drier less time to dry the clothes as the drier uses more electricity than the spin cycle of the washer.

*Another one (that I knew already) is putting the thermostat up to 82 degrees when leaving the house and when in the house keep it at 78 degrees.  That keeps it within the parameters of the comfort/tolerable zone for the human body and saves on electricity.  I vouch for this one as I'm doing it myself and have seen the difference in the electric bill (30 to 40 bucks difference).

*Another use of vinegar (that I recently found out) is using it for your skin. If you got dry flaky skin on your forehead (like I've had for several months now-strange, as I've never had it before) is to apply it on the infected area and after a few days of applications the skin goes back to normal.  Cures dandruff also.   I've tried this myself and it works like a charm.

*Also click here for more uses and there for apple vinegar & other natural health links.

*And this one also.

**************************************************************************************************
*WARNING* Vinegar full strength and chlorine full strength produce a toxic gas (World War 1).  Much like Mustard gas of that war but I take it it has to be FULL STRENGTH.  However I HIGHLY recommend not mixing it at any strength....please !

If anybody knows money saving tips please feel free to post them here.  I will be most grateful.

Clean all your glass and mirrored surfaces with vinegar and newspaper.

What nonsense thinking that some are more talented than you.

Vinegar is good for many things. My mother taught me to put it in the last hand wash of garments that give color. Then the color will be even.

    Good post.

i use white vinegar to clean out my coffee maker-  i'll run thru a cycle with a cup of white vinegar and then 2 more with just water!

one thing i do each week is go thru the grocery store circulars to see what's on sale for the coming week, then plan my meals and purchases around those sales as much as possible.  i'm terrible with coupons, but at least i try to get things when they're on sale.

Thank you for commenting and the tips Anon, Skald and Secret.
I've known about the vinegar and newspaper for cleaning windows and just found out about using it in the wash for better color and less lint sticking to your clothes.
The coffee maker I used to clean by just running water through it a couple of times but never did put vinegar in it. I will next time.
But I was surprised to learn about the other uses though.....I would've never thought to use it to repel ants....or to use it to refreshen the dish washing sponge by leaving it overnight soaking in vinegar and water.....or to use it in combination with Alka-Zeltser to clean the toilet ?? leaving it overnight soaking.
Or to use it to kill the weeds growing in cracks in the driveway or pavement?
I'm going to keep googling the matter and learning more.
    :^)

You dont even need the Alka-Seltzer try using baking soda instead.  A few drops of vinegar in the dogs drinking water will prevent yellowing of grass where they relieve themselves.

If you want to reduce the use of chemicals (and their cost) see if you can find a Norwex dealer.  They have micro-fibre clothes that almost eliminate the need for household chemicals.  A bit expensive to get started but they will cut your household cleaner usage by massive amounts.

Good job RC!  Hope you share some more as time goes by. I knew about the vinegar, yes, its good for many many things.  :)

I'm definitely going to consider trying vinegar and baking soda in the toilet. We have these hard water stains that look gross but just will not come off. That might work! I know baking soda and vinegar cleans silver jewelry really well. And it also makes for a fun science experiment if you make a volcano and pour that into it, because it bubbles up and foams everywhere :-P But I'm guessing you have no need to make a volcano....but if you've got silver jewelry or real silverware that's tarnished, it works good.

I know all about having to make the ends meet RC. (hugs)

Things that I do to keep the costs down:

Only have the water set to heat for the minimum amount of time (I have an immersion so it eats electricity).
    Wash at 30C.
Spin the clothes twice and hang out to dry any that can be. Those that need to go into the dryer remove immediately so they don't crease and therefore don't need to be ironed.
Don't over load the washing machine. Sometimes smaller washes are more economical.
Always switch off the lights if there is no-one in the room and only have on the minimum.
Always switch electrical appliances off, don't leave them on standby.
If you drink tea, reduce the number of teabags you use, same with the amount of coffee.
Go to the library to get books rather than buying them.

I use vinegar and baking soda to clear a clog or jam in the sink disposal!  Baking soda to clean the sink and then clear the sink disposal.  It's like a 2 for 1!  Actually, I use it on the drain first then clean.
I also use vinegar and water to wash the floors because they're travertine tile and to wash the granite counters.  Equal parts.

Whoops...another thing for the coffee pot:
Ice cubes, salt and lemon juice (white vinegar works too) and swish it all around!  CLEAN!

Vinegar is AWESOME on hard water stains, scale, and grunge.  I swear by it.  I use it all the time because we have really disgusting hard water with iron (so it turns things orange over time).

Any appliances that use water - washing machines, dishwashers, coffee pots - benefit from being run empty once in a while with some vinegar in the water.  If you have hard water this is really a necessary maintenance step, not optional.  Keeps it running smoothly and saves you service bills.

Vinegar is great for cleaning animal cages, litter boxes, etc.  Safe for the animals and cheaper than expensive "pet-safe" cleaners.

To clean tea stains, especially from matte (no gloss) surfaces, a paste of baking soda and water, let to dry, then scrubbed off, works great.  Thank you to Zayda for clueing me in to that one!

For food expenses, it helps to batch cook.  If you're making a casserole or soup or whatever, make two or three and freeze the extras in serving-size containers.  Then on days when you're tired and don't want to cook, or don't have time, or days when you are running low on grocery money, you can pop a container in the microwave and not be tempted to order out.  That's a big issue at our house.

It's a good idea too, to canvass older friends and relatives for recipes.  Older generations had to make do on a lot less than what most of us are used to anymore, so a lot of times they know recipes that really stretch your food dollars.  Most of my fallback "cheap" recipes for leaner weeks are from my grandmother or my mother-in-law.

Botani: Thanks for the tip, I'll be looking into that product.

Quiet: Yes I will as soon as I come across anything worthwhile.

Evil: Don't have any silverware anymore but I'll keep that in mind.

Mamie: Glad to have you visit.

Polar: Thanks for dropping by my friend.

Alyss: Thanks for your list and what's an immersion? I take it it's related to the
                water heater.
Daily: Thanks for the tips about the ice cubes.

Nytquil: Thank you for the tip on tea stains.  Portioning your food is an acceptable
method of making ends meet, ensuring profit margins in a restaurant
and making life easier overall as far as putting together a quick meal.

Fearing: I'll have to investigate laundry tips on saving money more in-depth as I've
come across various ideas that merit more research.

Silver:  Good to see you and thanks for dropping by.

CW: I've never tried it but I've heard and read about it. It's amazing the multiple
uses that vinegar has and I'd think as a child I'd put up with the smell to
               soothe the pain of sunburn.

    hi Rc,
My mom swears by vinegar too. I like to keep my bleach & water solution in a small spray bottle that has been properly labeled. I used a black sharpie and wrote 'bleach Water'  on all the sides of the bottle. I'm going to make one with vinegar and water, then i'll spray the weeds growing on my chain link fence. They look suspiscously like poison ivy vines. Do you think that'll kill them?
Also, i like to buy in bulk meats when they're on sale. Then, i like to sepperate it into individual portions and freeze them. It makes it a lot easier later on to just defrost and cook. Then you wont be as tempted to go out to eat. Mucho Dinero!

    Hi Day...thanks for dropping by.
I think that full strength on the root system will get it.  I've used plain salt, which I can get in bulk over at BJ's, and it works like a charm for weeds growing on the cracks and in between backyard tiles I got but I'm going to try vinegar on them soon.   I've recently used vinegar on the mold on the floor tiles in back (full strength) and it works good leaving it overnight.
I hate poison ivy by the way.....used to live in NY.

    hi Rc,
I'll try the full strength on those pesky vines. That chain link fence is also my clothes line at this time. It works well though. That dryer takes a lot of elec. I have to harp on everyone around here to hang their damn clothes on the 'line'.  They are finally getting the message. I'm the one who has to pay the bill. Every dollar seems to go a lot less further these days.

82 degrees when you're gone and 78 when you're home?  That would be way too hot for me, and sounds like you'd be spending an awful lot on heat.  How could that possibly save you money?
  • RollingC said on Aug 27, 2008....
Kruu...keep in mind that I live in Miami, Florida.  It's usually in the upper 80's over here and higher most of the time.  The few days of the year that the temp drops then you just open the windows.  Only a few days of the year do we get anything even close to 50 degrees although sometimes we do.
    But not often though.     :^)

evilT gave me an idea. I am going to make a volcano in my toilet and get it cleaned at the same time!

I guess I can use it to clean mould off the floor too. We've had rain the last 11 of 12 days with little wind and with me not home to open windows (and rain coming in buckets by the late afternoon when I am not home to close the windows). The air in the house is getting stagnant and has over 95% humidity. Mould is growing in the kitchen and the battle has begun. I just hope I don't remove the varnish from the floor.
