The title is deliberately provocative, but I read in the Malaysian news a week ago that, during a survey of young adults, including a significant number of graduates, it was observed that ~31% of those polled, said that they would accept bribes, if they are in positions of power or influence, which i take it to mean, in government or political positions?. Isn't this a scary notion, young men "prepared to sell their souls" to the highest, and they are still in school.. Susmariosep!!!!!

when money talk's, money is in control. it doesn't matter if meant being labeled as corrupt or a good for nothing human being. it so saddening if the next genereation has this in mind. I wont be surprise if war, terrorism and other violence will be resolved.

You ask a bunch of people who are poor if they would accept bribes - well of course they would. It's always about money when there isn't enough money to go around.

Not necessary. I have seen poor people more honest than the 'honest-est politician'...... I come from a very poor family, but my dad has never borrowed a "penny" that he has not repayed..

It seems that with each generation comes more degradation of the soul! It is no wonder that many people ask, “what is this world coming to?”

    Frincwrtr,
You are spot on! The generations that we are seeing now, generally come from a 'bumper' period after the 2nd world War, where money is plentiful, based on an ever expanding 'wealth system'. It's so easy to 'buy' politicians with green paper, so that illegal activities like logging, drug smuggling, destructive gold mining, whaling, can be conducted, to make more greenbacks... Through a spate of 40 years or so, the lure of money has superceded everything else in life... need we say more....?

There are individual differences of course, and the wealth of a nation makes a huge difference, but cultural differences are very important as well. For example, I've read that Finland is the least corrupt country on earth. I've also heard that Italy is very corrupt. But is Italy that much poorer than Finland? I doubt it... I think it's cultural... for example, Russia has a very heavy culture of corruption and it seems like no matter how much wealth is created there, I don't know if it could ever change. A lot of the most corrupt people on earth are very wealthy.

Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Singapore, have strong "social support" systems, and a relatively small homogenous population sharing much greater wealth. Therefore there is less reason to be corrupt, as they have all they need. For the Russians, they just want to make enough money to buy a soccer team in England and marry some models....... :-))

Hehehe maybe... it is truly the Wild West of Capitalism in Russia right now!

As for those non-corrupt nations you named, those sound like good reasons; I don't know much about Singapore, but as for those Scandinavian countries I feel that they have really figured a few things out about how to live, how to maintain a good society, I wish the rest of us could model our communities on theirs. A good example of one of my arguments against over-population...

I expect corruption in politics, but maybe I've just become cynical with age, but since I expect it from all politicians I don't let it bother me.

What does bother me with politicians are the ones that don't stay bribed. What I mean is, once they take a bribe I think they should carry through with their end of the bargin. I hate it when you can't trust a politician to stay bought. Partly because it is a farther depth of corruption to take bribes and then not even honor them, but mostly because if they stay bought than when I vote I can tell what they are likely to do but if they don't stay bought, then you can't pridict them.
  • StrangeOne said on Oct 04, 2006....
It is inherently dishonorable to accept a bribe, so why would you expect the "bribee" to remain honorable to the briber? It's like marrying a person who you know consistently cheated on their ex, expecting them to stay loyal to you. Makes no sense.
  • DreamDrifter said on Oct 05, 2006....
StrangeOne: There are degrees to everything in life, dishonorability included. Just because a person is dishonest enough to take a bribe does not mean they cannot have any honor at all. I suppose what I'm saying is that sadly I have come to expect politicians to be dishonest but I still expect a limit to their dishonesty. After all, just because a criminal might steal money does not mean they will injure someone to steal their money.
