Little known bits of history. In 1945 there were two nuclear programs going on in areas controlled by the Japanese, one in Japan and one in Korea. One of those programs was on schedule to detonate nuclear bombs over Los Angeles and San Francisco by Christmas of 1945. It was going to happen. L.A. and S.F. would have been toast if Japan didn't capitulate when it did.
This information came to light decades after the war ended, when a Japanese scientist in the nuclear development program came clean with it, and it was later substantiated by others in the program. They weren't all that far behind America.
A related bit of news that is not well known. Japan actually did bomb California during WW2. The thing is, Cali didn't notice. They sent balloons or something to Cali, and these balloons had bombs attached to them, and a few of them detonated. I don't know if anyone was killed or injured by them.
More well known, though not taught in our school system, Japan bred fleas to carry anthrax and bubonic plague to China, full fledged biological warfare. They dropped these fleas into wells and on grass. Many Chinese fell victim to these diseases as a result. Then the victims were told to go to new hospitals set up by the Japanese for treatment. In those hospitals, the victims had their chests cut open and bits of lung cut out with knives (no anesthesia of course) so the Japanese doctors could monitor the spread of the diseases. Imagine being a "patient" in a "hospital" like this, and every few days you get a visit from a doctor and he tortures you by cutting into your chest and removing more of your lung, until you die.
