landscape quilt 002

Well, this is my first attempt at a landscape wall hanging.  Its not quite done as I have yet to figure out what to use to tie the grapes together to represent grape vines.  And then maybe do some free motion quilting on the background... but for what its worth, I don't think it came out too awfully bad for a first attempt.

You've got to be joking...that is beautiful!  You should be making these and selling them to the public.  I am continually amazed at your creative talent!

wombie ~ ha, creative talent.. I don't know about that.  I got the idea from a picture and used it.  Some day, I will finish it... but not today!.. (tomorrow doesn't look promising either)  LOL but thanks my friend.

    That's absolutely stunning quiet. ;-)

Alyss stole my word.  Stunning was the first word that popped into my head.  Have you considered using a couched dark green cord to tie the grapes together?
  • wishyouwerehere said on Jul 25, 2008....
It's really very beautiful, Quiet.  I like U-I's suggestion about the green cord.  I love the fabric you chose as the border.  You really are very talented!

OMG, quilty, that is amazing!  I have never tried a landscape quilt.  That is absolutely gorgeous!  You've been hiding your light under a bushel basket, young lady.  You could always hand- or machine-embroider some curly vines on it.  Is that machine applique, or hand work?  If you did it all by hand then you really are my hero.  :D
  • skald said on Jul 25, 2008....
Oh that is so beautiful. You are so artistic. The colors and everything are so good together. . It is just like I am looking out of a window at a landscape. How clever of you.
  • quietone said on Jul 25, 2008....
Alyss ~ thanks. I feel embarrassed. see my cheeks are red now.

Uniquely ~ I have though of some sort of cord, but it has to be thin enough to be able to sew by hand through.  I haven't been able to find jus tthe right kind yet.

wish ~ I like that border color too.. the back is all solid with that color also.  Thanks

Meems ~ I thought doing a landscape wall hanging would be easy... its not!  LOL  very time consuming.  Most of it is machine applique, but the grapes have to be hand worked.. too many twists and turns.  so its a bit of both.  Now.. I wish I could find some grape vine!  If you happen to run across something that might work.. let me know. thanks.

skald ~ there are so many "pictures" in my head, that I would love to do, but hard to find just the right fabric to do it.  It is fun trying though.  Thank you my friend.

My comments are not showing up...if this one does then Halleluja...I don't know wether it's Soulcast or my computer.....
Your quilt came out beautiful quiet....you want to teach me how to quilt? You know...you could easily sell these on the internet and start a part-time job with this.  That's a very interesting possibility.

    quiet,
That is gorgeous!  Maybe some ribbon could work for the grapevine...or perhaps a bit of beading?  I like the cord idea too.

    You're very talented.  :-)

RC ~ you know I have thought about selling some of mys "stuff" but, then, it becomes work instead of a hobby and it kinda takes the fun out of it. But, sure I'd teach ya a thing or two about quilting!

CW ~ I don't think talented much, but its fun trying new things as you know.  wish i could find the right kind of cord.  Heck, maybe I will just go out in my back yard and get the real thing!  LOL

The first thing I said was "OH AWESOME!  It's like a window view!" Did you mean to make it look like the view from a window?  The lines do look like a window!

I'm envious of all our crafty kathy's here!  NOTE:  Crafty Kathy is a saying in our area, like "Chatty Kathy" for people who talk too much.  If it's your real name, I had no idea!

Quiet - it's beautiful!  I am still in kindergarten with basic pieced quilts.  I did some applique once and now I can't figure out how I did it so well because I can't seem to do it again! lol

Have you considered some of that pre-made bias binding/bias tape you can buy in fabric shops?  Or piping or rickrack.  Piping is thick at the actual "pipe" but usually it comes with "wings" of thinner fabric at the sides that are easy to sew through.  And some broad rickrack, or two or three "stripes" of thinner rickrack laid side-by-side might do the trick too!

Or you could make your own...just brainstorming here.  Cut your own bias strips, and if you want a 3-D effect, make them into tubes with some kind of filler in the middle - a strip of batting, maybe?  You'd have to make the curves kind of gentle so you wouldn't get too much puckering, but bias strips are nice and stretchy which makes it easier.
  • quietone said on Jul 26, 2008....
nytquill ~ I have thought of the piping, but thought it might be too hard to sew through.. I think I will go look at it again.  maybe even some very thin bias binding.. narrow I mean and maybe then "braid" it and give it a different look.  hmm that sounds interesting.. thanks for the great ideas!  The black trim for the window affect was out of bias - it worked well.  I am sure if you got back into the swing of "things" it would all come back to you too.  Its fun to see what happens sometimes.
