The other day, I was in Once Upon a Child to cash in some clothes of my daughter's that she had outgrown.  While I waited, I browsed through the new selections and nearly fell over with the increased prices!  I mean, I understand that some children's clothes can be $30 for an outfit, but I actually saw a USED pair of 4T pants (albeit very gently used) for $20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Honestly, I would have hated to see what the original price was!  Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you can afford to buy such expensive clothes, what would you be doing buying second-hand things??  That was what went through my mind first...then I had to question the sanity of having anything as fabric that couldn't even cover up my arm be the cost of a tank of gas these days.  WTH??  Thankfully, not everything was that highly priced, and I did end up finding some items that were what I would call "reasonable" prices for second-hand items.  In my opinion, anything over $6 is steep for second-hand.

But my biggest surprise came when I got my offer for the 5 bags of clothes/toys/dvds I was turning in.  They wanted to pay me $14 for only half a bag's worth of things.  The reason??  Because some of the labels were "outdated" and some of the clothes were looking worn.  Um, ok...the last time I checked, this was a consignment store, not a hip and new retail store!!  I'd like to know since when does Osh Kosh stuff become obsolete?  Because my daughter had a pretty nice raincoat and it was laundered, not even tattered in the least, and they didn't take it.  Ooooh, I was so mad!  I mean, really, what business do they have selling only the top of the line clothes, when most of the people shopping are looking for the best bargains and want lower-quality clothes because they know their kids won't be in them for long!  That just really made me crazy.  And in the future, I am NOT taking any more old clothes to that store.  I'd rather sell my stuff on e-Bay.

consignment stores are getting to be very "in" now---
they're picky about what they'll take, and alot are actually looking for new w/tags and never used or "maker" brands very gently used.

these new breed consignment stores are nothing like the ones i remember-

    No kidding!  It's absolutely ridiculous!

You might look into selling at the consignment stores, but buying at the thrift stores.  You do have to do more shopping to find good quality, gently used clothes of the same caliber, but they will definately be cheaper.

Yeah, I've been doing the rounds at Goodwill lately.  When I was a kid we were kind of lowest middle class and couldn't afford to shop at normal stores much.  Then my mom had a good job when I was a teenager, and we could afford to be more of your usual middle class, so I was too embarrassed to shop at thrift places anymore.  Now that I'm an adult, I look at it waaay differently!

Once Upon a Child is notorious for not giving you very much money for the clothes you turn in to them. They'll give you 10 cents for something and turn around and sell that item that they gave you 10 cents for for $4.00.

They are a business, so they are in it to make money, not just to save their customers money.

However, I can't believe they are selling used 4T pants for $20.00. The highest I've seen anything in Once Upon a Child is $6.00 for a Tommy Hilfiger dress.

Oh, and U-I has point. Once Upon a Child isn't a true consignment store. A consignment store will take your items for X amount of time, price them, and try to sell them for you. They will keep track of your items that sell, then take a percentage of the total of what sold that was yours. They usually keep your items for 30 to 60 days, then will return them to you if they didn't sell or ask you if you want to continue to try to sell them but at a reduced price.

Usually, you'll make more money at a Consignment Store than you will at Once Upon a Child. Hell, I made more money selling my son's gently used clothes at our last garage sale than I did by taking them to Once Upon a Child.

Well...if I were you I would sell them on Craigslist before Ebay.  I don't sell anything on Ebay anymore due to the fees involved with paypal as a seller.  I set up a new paypal account and DO NOT accept credit cards because of the fees.

For the most part, I buy boutique things for Little D.  I think that's what they mean when they're talking about the tags being out of date.  I can buy her things with or without tags new or used and make the same money back, or close enough, selling it used.  So, her clothes turn into almost FREE because of the labels.

It's almost turned into a competition which stinks!

Don't get me wrong, I do dress her in OshKosh things and think they hold up very well!

The big "mall" sellers these days are Gymboree and Gap.  SO, if you see a deal or a steal on these things, buy them and dress her in them and resell them.

As far as boutique names that are good sellers...there are tons.  Anything that is sold at an actual children's boutique will sell well.
