so this past weekend, the mrs and i spent saturday playing dungeons & dragons (D&D) in a game someone else is running. yesterday morning, we woke up, hit a local farmers market we haven't visited in years, saw the new batman movie (the dark knight, it was awesome, but there are already 3 other blog entries about its awesomeness), then we hosted a session of my D&D game.

after yesterday's session, i considered posting the session summary e-mail as a blog entry here but realized after the fact that i don't really want to do that, b/c it contains details about the setting i intend to use in my writing.

and that was when i realized that the way i'd spend the past 48 hours definitely qualifies me for some kind of scary-assed geek status.

o right, did i mention that i have to e-mail the guy running saturday's game about things i wanna do in his game? when we haven't yet figured out when the next session will be? :>

anyway: have a good monday, guys--i know i will!

Ed, you might be a geek but you're a cool geek!

Why do you have to let the guy know what you want to do in his game before the game?  I know almost zilch about this type of gaming.  I don't even know what kind of system plays them.  I'm not a geek, just a dork.  ;-)

I still haven't seen Dark Knight.  Everyone here says it is great but my brother said it was "okay".  Hmmm.  Looking forward to seeing Heath Ledger's role in it.

I hate Mondays - even in the summer.  UGH!

Ed- Although I'll never call you a scary-assed geek, it is looking serious. That's ok, so long as you and wifey enjoy it and spend time together. I might recommend you don't call her a scary-assed geek.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 21, 2008....
Ha ha ha he he.  Yeah, you're pretty high up there on the geek scale.  You're still good unless you have a pocket protector and tape on the bridge of your glasses.
  • vacantmind said on Jul 21, 2008....
LOVE the GEEK! Besides, D&D is genetic. Not something you have control over. I use to believe my ex had an addiction to the game but, then the boys started getting older and they are developing a love for it. There has to be a genetic link somewhere.
  • MissMimi said on Jul 21, 2008....

Holy crap, Ed, this is much more serious than I thought!  You really are a geek.  Anyone who considers posting a session summary of Dungeons and Dragons (a game I must admit I know nothing about) certainly tips the scales into geekdom.

But I overlook it because of your cuteness and sweetness.  And because underneath your geekiness, beats the heart of a perv.  :p  ;)

    Just teasing you.  Sort of.

  • dailyachesandpains said on Jul 21, 2008....
I really honestly can't believe that D&D still exists and that anyone under 40 knows about it (unless like myself, have a sister that is older than I and 40 herself).  Even when my Sister was 18-ish it was considered dorky to play D&D.  On the flip side, I know you do have to be really smart to play so that says something, Ed.  You're intelligent.  Not a bad thing :-)

Now, if you tell me that you meet up with all your friends in the park to play that sword game I will knight you as "Sir SUPER DORK!"  Lol!

It sounds like you had a great weekend, Ed.

Don't you  know that geeks are the in thing these days.  I saw a report on the news where there is a dating site where women go to search out their perfect geek.  :-)  So, it can't be such a bad thing.  I would be worried about you if you were more of a news junkie bookworm like me.  lol

I know of D & D, but not much about it.  If you are having fun, that's all that matters!  I didn't know the Mrs. was playing, also---but that just makes it more cool for you.  You are scary-assed to me, ha--but a geek?  Na.....   lol.

    I envy you really.
I haven't played D&D although I've played similiar (Boulder's Gate) and liked it.  But I'm trying to figure out how to host a game of one of my all time favorite first person shooter game Quake 2.  and getting nowhere for now.
It's an old game and probably responsible in some way for the way first person shooters evolved as it was extremely popular in it's day.

fearing: so good to see you again! :> don't worry, RPGs are my addiction, but certainly not everyone's. :> i'm curious to know what you think of the dark knight, should you see it--btw, not at all appropriate for scooter bug, if you hadn't already gleaned that. :> and you know, since starting this job, i don't dread mondays anymore, to be honest. :>

beyond: my friend, it's good to see you again. and no, i don't call her that--although truth be told, she actually is... :D

u-i: see, i always figured i was! but no, no pocket protector or taped glasses over here: i'm a stylish geek. :D

vm: indeed, it may really be genetic! ladygamer's a pretty serious geek too and her girls are all gamers as well! :D

mimi: wait, i'm cute? when the hell did that happen?!

    [stamps feet in protest]

    :D

daily: o, it was geeky even when it was really popular in the 80s, no question. :> and no, i don't say that. ever. :D good to see you again, btw. :>

CW: see, i don't know that geeks are the in thing anymore but hey, if you say it, i'll buy it. :D

trav: indeed, i intend to reclaim the word, to be honest. i think this bizarre distaste for having a functioning brain is itself stupid so i say to hell with it. :>

wombat: nah, i'm definitely a geek. hell, i've been known to evangelize to people about gaming. :>

grape: my pleasure, my friend! :>

woman: when bill gates--undeniably by anyone's standards a geek--is one of the richest men in the world, i suppose that must be so! :D

fallyn: and i haven't even started talking about how my wife is a geek! :D

moon: ah, my friend...truly, it's good to see you again. :> [bows deeply]

rollingc: ah, i've played baldur's gate 2--do you mean the computer game or the console version, which given what a friend of mine tells me is a totally different game?

Geek maybe, but spending the weekend doing what you love can't be all that bad. I'd say if you're having fun then don't stop. It's great you and your wife can do these things together. And hey, wasn't D&D how you guys met?
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 22, 2008....
    fallyn: :D

sis: yep, i certainly am! :D

Sorry. I was trying to remember a post you wrote some time back about how you two met. I thought I recalled D&D being mentioned.

When the kids were little we moved from our hometown. We bought a house that was larger than anything they had ever lived in before. Naturally, we had nightmares and monsters in the new house. I would bring in the monster's compendium and let the show me who was creating all the trouble for my kiddos. Once we knew what we were dealing with, we could defeat them. We got really creative with the demise of those creatures. The kids loved it!

I don't really play D&D anymore. I am a true RenFest Geek though!

  • fearing said on Jul 22, 2008....
Ed, I saw Dark Knight!  I liked it though it was much different than the previous Batman movies.  I think it has an edge that completely separates it from the others.  The violence was a little much for me.  I closed my eyes a lot.  Even without a lot of blood, it was still too graphic in nature.

In the beginning, each time Batman spoke, all I could think of was Clint Eastwood and I half expected him to say "Right turn Clyde".  After I got used to it, it was cool.  Kinda sexy.  He should have spoken that way when he was Bruce Wayne.  As for Heath Ledger - wow!  If I hadn't known it was him, I might have had a difficult time guessing.  I think he did an unbelievable job as a bad guy.  A little too scary sometimes.

The biggest bummer was Maggie Gyllenhaal.  I won't spoil it here for those who haven't seen it.  That should have turned out differently.

All in all, I would see it again but I'm not as enthused as others who've watched it.  Like I said, the violence was over the line for my taste.

Leaving Scooter Bug at home was the right decision!

Oh, and it was freeeeezing in the theater and I shivered the whole time.  I didn't want to leave out such an important part of my movie-going experience.  :-)

hotaka: no big deal, it actually is vaguely-related. :>

vm: bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! that's hysterical! but did you award the kids XPs? :D

fearing: yeah, it's quite different, no question. but i thought the edge was necessary b/c of the joker and yeah, the implied violence is very, very brutal. i can understand why you found it unsettling. and to be honest, while i understand re: maggie gyllenhall, i think that was the right way for that to unfold.

ex: the new version is very, very different. it is in many ways a step back to AD&D2 and to T$R (GSL), IMHO.
