So, I'm visiting Ma at the nursing home, planning on her move to my sister's house (thankfully, my sister's house).  We were yakking about this and that, my business trip to Cheyenne, the deaths of some nice people at the home, visitors and just stuff.  I mentioned that after a day at work enforcing ugly tax laws and coming home to rush a couple of chores and make dinner I'm plum tuckered and the thought of exercise is laughable.  Mom's lovely response?  You need to lose weight!  That's what makes you so tired.

No kidding?  You mean this extra 50 to 100 pounds is dragging my ass down?  Gee whiz.  What a concept.  Yeah.  I need to lose weight, thanks for noticing.

it's so hard to make time for ourselves, isn't it?  we work, we take care of others, we take care of homes, and then we find there's noa helluva lot of energy left for anything but rest so we can do it all again tomorrow.

things must seem much simpler for you mom.  she must have forgotten what it's like to be at the stage in life that you're in now.

My dad is like that sometimes.  It makes me feel like I'm 12.  In the end we can't control what they say or think though.

Ladies, here's a guy with some of those same problems. I'm not pretty, damn fat, and just hard to get along with at times. My pet peve, my family members have trouble hitting the "5 W's" of comminication. Remember in high school, who, what, where, when, and why. Opppps, I digressed a little but still may fall into the "Who's Kidding" caption.

Secretlife...Mom never really experienced the full life.  She helped out at 13, and was present at the moment, when her father was dying.  She moved 2000 miles away after marriage, and arrived after the fact when relatives died.  She rarely worked outside the home and never did anything for any old people that she wasn't paid for.  She never helped with my chronically ill son when he was small and in fact flat-out refused to host him for a week like my sister's kids because of his illness.  NOT that she owed me anything, but it would have meant the world to him.  Funny, she's always had these "people helping each other out" ideals, but it always seemed one-sided, in her direction.  She has never quite grasped the reaching out part of that.  It's too bad.  It doesn't take people long to figure her out, and then comes the distancing.  But, I love her anyway.
