Always there are reminders that life waits for no one........and that even in sadness there are things to laugh about and be grateful for-

So this morning my son and I went to the funeral mass for my neighbor.
There were over 1200 people who attended her wake last night, and the church was completely filled so at least 600 attended the funeral this morning.

It was a beautiful folk mass-

She attended the 10:30 mass each week with her family, and the choir along with all of the instrumentalists were there.  The music was very touching.

3 priests presided over the service.  2 of them retired several years ago, but came back just to make the mass special for her and for her family.

Afterwards, my son and i were stuck in the van for a while.  the funeral procession was lining up in the parking lot,  and we were inadvertently blocked from moving for about 20 minutes.

While waiting for the air conditioning to kick in so we could cool down the van (it's very hot and humid here today), my cell phone rang.

My son answered it.

It was my oldest daughter.

"Mom, call dad.  He got fired from his job."

"What???"

"Just call him now."

I hung up and dialed his cell phone number.

Thought #1:  Oh shit.  What are we going to do now?
Thought #2:  Well, i've been wondering for 10 years which one of us would lose their job first, so i guess now i know....
Thought #3: I wonder if he finally lost his cool and said something to one of his new bosses to get himself fired?

(sidebar---You see, his company recently outsourced all of their production work to China.
So the small R&D department he's in has had to pick up all programming work for production jobs on top of already being short-handed in running the R&D projects.

The past month or so he's gotten alot of feedback that his work has "saved" several major accounts.  Yesterday his boss got an email from an engineer he'd helped saying that without him, they would not have been able to meet their commitments.  It was a very nice email, except the engineer didn't mention my husband's last name, and that stuck in his crawl.  The management is new, and there are lots of men with the same first name-
That plus last year his salary maxed out, and he didn't get a raise.  And he wants a raise.
Praise is nice, but a raise is what makes my husband feel appreciated.
So he had few words with his boss yesterday about the oversight of his last name in the email, and i thought perhaps he'd had words this morning with his director and might have lost his temper....)

Anyway-----

After 5 rings it went to his voice mail.

I left a message to call me back on the cell.

Thought #3: So much for our vacation...
Thought #4: I wonder if he'll get any severance?
Thought #5: I hope he stops at the unemployment office before he gets home....it's still early.

No callback and more than 5 minutes had passed so i called his cell again.
Again I got his vm.

Thought #6: Boy, we're going to have a cash flow problem real soon
Thought #7: I don't think i can deal with this today....
Thought #8: He'll get another job.  Don't panic.

Still no call back.

I tried again.
Got vm again.

The funeral procession began to move by then and i began the 2 mile drive home.
Sitting at the traffic light my cell phone rang.

Me:  Are you ok?
        What happened?

Him:  What are you talking about?

Me:  Why did you get fired?

Him:  laughing.......

Me:  Are you crazy?

Him:  I was joking with them.

Me:  You jerk!  Joking?
I've been sitting here for 20 minutes thinking we're in big trouble!

Him:  I called the house an hour ago looking for you.  I forgot about the funeral.
When i called, the two girls had picked up different extensions and were fooling
          around with me.
They wouldn't quit and i couldn't get a word in edgewise....

Me:  You've gotta be kidding....

Him:  They were pretending they were "robbers" and were busy robbing the house.
They were masking their voices, and giggling....saying things like "we're in your
silverware drawer now" and "Oh, I really love your wedding ring...they wouldn't quit .

I HAD to get their attention somehow so I told them to have you call me
          immediately because i'd been fired.

Me:   You had me crazy for the past 20 minutes you jerk!!!!

Him:  Everything's ok.  I just wanted to let you know that i would be working tomorrow-  i
know you thought i'd be doing the sheetrock in the bathroom.

Me:   Ok, I have to drive.  I'll talk to you later.

Big BIG SIGH OF RELIEF HERE-
Thank God I don't have to deal with that today!!!

I pulled into my driveway and beeped the horn.  The girls were supposed to meet me outside so that i could drive them to the pool before i went back to work.

But nobody came out.

My son and I went inside.
Neither of the girls was downstairs.

We went upstairs.  Their room doors were closed and it was very quiet.
I was yelling their names by that time...

Are you going to the pool or what?

The oldest opened her door and came into the hallway.
She had been crying.

The middle one heard me and opened her door.  Her eyes were puffy and red.  She had been crying too-  and for a while.

#2:  I can't go to the pool.  Daddy lost his job.  I'm too upset about it to go to the pool....

me:  It was a joke.  Daddy was playing a joke because you guys were relentless in teasing him.

#1:  a joke?  are you kidding me?  omg, what an as*&%!# he is!!!!

The girls looked at each other.
Ok, it was kinda heartbreaking here to think they'd been crying and worried for 1/2 hr---
But it was also very funny to watch their faces realize that he'd beat them at their own game!!!!

And then it was the 4 of us all laughing hysterically in the hallway-
Each of us realizing just how lucky we really are.

But I wouldn't want to me my husband when he comes home from work tonite, because you can bet those girls are going to be out for revenge!!!!

I'm not sure whether to laugh or be amazed at how freaked out the girls were.  I'd lay odds your husband's life is gonna be rough this weekend. :)

Oh I'd be so mad. That's not a very funny joke! I'm really glad it was a joke though, and not serious. That's a horrible sinking feeling if you think your life is about to suck hard like that. I bet your daughters are going to lay into him good!

ui-  every year of my 24 yr career in telcom's there have been downsizings-  the past 10 have been vicious.  it's to the point where it doesn't matter if you're a great worker, it's about the politics of where you are when the axe falls--

my husband's job was more stable- but the past several there have been cuts where he is too.  and this year when they completely outsourced the largest dept without any notice, we realized we could realistically face one of us being unemployed at any moment.

but we took the risk of buying this house.  the property taxes here are close to 15K a year.  it's just insane.

my husband always asks...what if?  and i always say, well dear, if one of us loses our job, and can't find another in 3 or 4 months, we put out the 4-sale sign.

so the kids are used to hearing us....and i just know they were thinking the 4-sale sign wasn't a long ways away.  they love it here and don't want to move.

mamie:  LOL......i was telling a girlfriend about my morning before i posted and she told me i should write a sit-com about my life.
i'm telling you, the sight of all of us down on the carpet in the hallway laughing was priceless.

yes, thank heavens i don't have to face that unemployment crisis today!

mmi:  LOL...he came home from work with a shit-eating grin on his face- bearing gifts-  company water bottles and flashlights....they must have been giving away stuff with the logo and he took them as a peace offering for the kids.

you enjoy your weekend too.  i hope it isn't as hot there as it is here!

e_t:  ya know, it really wasn't funny for like the first minute after he told me, but then i was just so relieved that i could continue on with my day that i had to laugh at him....the big dope.

lucy:  i was a mess for 20 minutes and then poof, everything was fine!

ok, so let me tell you what my sweet daughters did-

they emptied out the silverware drawer onto my husband's side of the bed.  He went up to take a shower and came down and let me know.  When he opened up the drawer in my kitchen, there was a note signed........."the robbers"....

i can hardly wait to see what else they have up their sleeves for him.

he's doomed.  poor guy just doesn't realize it yet!!!

Oh Man....he is doomed.  I know those girls will show no mercy.  You had me scared there for awhile then I had a sigh of relief.  Glad all is okay......but I kind of feel sorry for hubby.  I know he is in for it.

Happy you had a moment of laughter with the girls.......that is one of those snapshot moments that make you appreciate life.

Also.....sorry about your friend secret.  Things have not been easy for you lately.  You are in my prayers girlfriend!  xo

I'm betting Mr. S is in for a very taxing weekend......and he has darned well earned it.
  • MissMimi said on Jul 18, 2008....

Uh oh, mrS is gonna get it -- offspring can be merciless in their quest for revenge.  ;)

Maybe this was given to you to lighten an otherwise very sad day.  Not to minimize the solemnity of the occasion, but sometimes laughter is the best solace.  Life does go on.

Nice. Yeah, he got them and you innocently got caught in the net too. But I am sure your husband was tagged big time by the girls later. Cunning women, even ones who only like to believe they are cunning, will not stand being beaten in the game of being cunning and sly.
  • moonriver said on Jul 19, 2008....
secret, I was interested in your train of thought (in italics) as it ran full speed ahead into a very unsure future. I tend to do that too every time a hint of bad news comes wafting in... not really in the sense of worrying, but of a chess player trying to  piece together what happened, and to anticipate the next best moves.

  • queenparanoia said on Jul 19, 2008....
just proves that you could always smile even when sadness came to your life... =)

hehehehe i hope you post the revenge girls had over their dad... =)
  • newbeginnings said on Jul 19, 2008....

I hope they made their dad breakfast in bed and did all the chores...they owe him big time..... I laughed out loud afer I stopped saying omg, oh no, oh no, omg as I read donn the page. teenage girls are a blessing , people keep telling me....yeah when they leave home!

laugh,cry....what is one to say about this posting?
  • RollingC said on Jul 22, 2008....
I'm sorry about the friend that passed away and she must've been something popular & well known for that many people to attend the mass for her.

On the other hand if one of you does get laid off then you'd have to start writing episodes of your family's life of sitcoms and with your writing skills you'd probably be better off for I betcha it'll go on national tv.

October 4, 2008

My Grandma passed away. My mom and I went to the hospital around 4 hours ago knowing that this may happen. I couldn't go in after hearing my dad describe her state. I have chosen to remember her as I've always seen her....
Yesterday I got a package with old photos from my Aunt....
I'm grumpy this morning. I got a phone call this morning from a way too chirpy sister-in-law to ask me to do the refreshments for another sister-in-law's wedding reception. I said I would help, because it is the right thing to do. I kno...
i've always noticed that when i'm in an easy time or period of my life i have friends that care. when times are tough, which happens a lot (and often stays for longer periods of time in my life) i have no friends that care. have you ever noticed that?...
