So, I've been thinking about building a new home instead of buying one (I'm renting now but I don't have to be), but I've been pretty afraid of the market.   I read an article written by a realtor in my area that the housing market isn't that bad (at least in my local area)- he has lots of charts and graphs to prove his point.  I realize that he has an interest in people believing that the market's not that bad, but his numbers are pretty compelling.

I saw this artcle for a custom home builder called Schumacher Homes that is offering to make the payments for the new house.  At first, I thought it was like the Home Depot credit card no payments deal- they would pay the interest on it and then the customer ends up getting screwed somehow, but it looks like they are paying both principal and interest on the loan for 12 months.  I am thinking about going in to talk to one of their salespeople, but wanted to see if anyone out there has built with them using this deal and if there are any catches to it?

You have to use their financing company & spend a certain amount of money on a new home.  They say you have to make each payment and then they will send you a check in the mail.  I met with them and they were not able to customize a home for me, so we are not building with them.  It seems a bit consumer unfriendly to not build it the way I want.  Also, after visiting their model homes, I have solidified my decision not to build with them.  The models are in need of cleaning & repair.  What market are you building in?

Thanks for the response, Gabe, but I'm not sure that we're talking about the same Schumacher Homes. I'm in Baton Rouge area, and the Schumacher Homes office doesn't have model homes- I visited this weekend. I kind of wish it did have models as I would like to see some of these in person (it's hard to tell how big a room is from a blueprint), but it's a nice looking store in the middle of a small plaza. Inside the office is a lot of examples of their building materials (cross-sections of the walls, cement blocks and then things like faucets and carpet). I was actually very impressed with my visit- the salesperson was very nice but not too pushy (I REALLY hate pushy salespeople). You mentioned that they weren't able to customize a home for you- what were you looking for? I didn't want a lot, but I did ask for the garage to be a little bigger in the back (for a workspace) and an extra bathroom upstairs (I have daughters- it's just easier that way) and they had one of their architects make changes to the plan on the screen while I watched. I got the sense that they would do anything I asked but, admittedly, I didn't ask for a lot. What did you want them to do that they wouldn't?

I live in Ohio & visited their models in Akron. I wanted them to add square footage, change the location of a few rooms in the house, build a deck, have cement countertops in the kitchen, a doggy door, walk out basement, craft room in the basement, hearth room off of the kitchen, heated driveway... I am glad you had a good experience in Baton Rouge. I have had difficulty getting them to call me back.
