When I am going through a difficult time, joy can rise up within me through the blessing of companionship. I feel the joy that family, friends, and coworkers bring me through their love, prayers, and other supportive ways.

Then there may be a time away from the people who offer me such support. At the end of the day, I may not feel valued by others. What a difference it makes when a pet welcomes me home with an enthusiasm that proclaims: "You are the most important, loved person in the world!"

No matter what I am going through, however, the spirit of God is my strength in all circumstances, my shield from all adversity. Knowing God is my greatest joy.
