As I was writing the last post and I got to the picture of my day lilies, i remembered a funny story.
It's one of those stories that's funny in retrospect.
It wasn't funny at the time....

100_1205

Stephanie worked with me for many years.
She was just a little tiny woman........maybe 5 feet tall, very petite, and perky and about 7 or 8 years older than me.

She was italian.

When i first met her, she was in her middle 30's and "dating" a man who was recently divorced after a long marriage.  He was in his mid 50's.

Frank never wanted to marry again, but after a few years they began to live together, and a few years after that they bought a home together in a rural part of NJ.

Frank was italian too.
And his mom was still alive.
Josephine, a widow for 20 years by that time, was in her early 90's when she came to live with Frank and Stephanie.

She wasn't your stereotype 90-something year old.  She was a spry little woman who was quite independent.

One of Frank and Steph's hobbies was gardening.

They had a huge vegetable garden in their yard, and a huge perennial garden as well.
They canned what they grew, and they even made their own wine.

One thing about italians, and especially the older generation italians is they will try to eat almost anything-

Dandilion salads are a prime example.
I consider dandilions to be weeds.  But Josephine thought dandilions were lunch-

One day as she was out back picking for her salad, she came upon Steph's day lilies in full bloom.  And she decided that a day lily would make a fine addition to her dandilion salad.

Steph was working, and Frank was out running errands.

Josephine was taking a "nap" when Frank returned.

It wasn't until Steph got home and they tried to rouse her from her sleep for dinner that they realized something was very wrong.

She was hard to wake up-
And when she did open her eyes, she was disoriented.
She didn't seem to know where she was...
She could speak, but she wasn't making any sense.

Worried, they rushed her to the emergency room thinking perhaps a stroke-  she had a history of heart issues....

At the hospital, she was admitted.
She was unconscious.
Steph said "coma".

Then began 2 full days of "tests"---

The doctors were baffled.
They couldn't find anything wrong.

But Josephine didn't wake up.

By the evening of the 2nd day, they were asking Frank and Steph if she'd eaten anything different-
or if she'd taken any medication that might have been different-

They went home to search the house to see if they could find any clues.

And in the kitchen, on the shelf next to the window, they found a note that Josephine had left.
Don't ask me why she left that note, but it proved to be the answer to the puzzle the doctors were looking for.

The note said:

lunch:  dandilion salad with lily bulbs-

They called the doctor and he asked that they bring a few "samples" of they types of lilies they had in their yard-

As it turns out, the bulbs of some lilies are poisonous.
The particular day lily that Josephine ingested was a powerful hallucinagenic.

She had overdosed. And basically was "tripping"- like you'd "trip" from an OD of LSD.

By day 3, Josephine was awake and seemingly normal, and on day 5 she was released from the hopital under the condition that she'd leave the flowers out of her salads!

Have you ever heard of anything like this???

Good grief!  I am exactly the opposite -- I can't even imagine thinking that lily bulbs would make a good salad.  I wonder though if they taste like onions.  I'm pretty sure that onions and lilies are related botanically speaking.

Too weird.  Glad she was okay though.

I wonder if that would be fun if you didn't eat too much of it? :-P Not that I'd try that! I can't imagine ever wanting to eat flowers because that's just gross. And this is what happens when people try to eat weird things that they're not supposed to. Hopefully she didn't try to eat the mushrooms growing in her yard either!

Oh Secret, I had to laugh when you said that Italians will eat anything! I'm married to an Italian and the things his family has cooked..........Well, let's just say I have some stories. So, I'm here to back you up on the "eat anything" part of the story. That is really odd that she wrote down what she had for lunch. Perhaps she had started feeling odd right afterwards and wrote it down for that reason. Thanks for sharing.

LOL that's actually pretty funny considering that everyone survived.  I would imagine that her "trip" was quite an experience.  My mother's family will eat a lot of "weeds" and other non-planned plants.  I always shyed away from that stuff on the principal that they're probably crazy.

hey secret....just saying 'hi'.and i miss you.............i think you might be pissed at me....i still love ya though....

Lots of flowers are "technically edible."  I was pretty sure before the story even started that day lillies weren't on the list though!

I have a rabbit, so I have to know these things :p  Rabbits can eat dandelions (leaves and flowers), rose petals, and a bunch of other flowers that I can't think of atm.

My grandmother has a degree in pharmacology and when she was in better health was forever bringing back edible plants and things from her walks.  They didn't all taste very good but she knew what she was doing as far as safety.

Thank goodness this lady was okay!  I wonder if there are some bulbs okay to eat and she just got mixed up on which ones?  Because a bulb seems like an odd thing to just randomly put in your salad because you "thought it might be good."   She must have had some background for wanting to eat them in the first place!

mimi:  i know that some daylilies ARE edible.  in fact there's one type that's used to make chinese hot & sour soup.....
but not all types are edible, and there're so many varieties of lilies and daylilies that i'd be afraid to even try!

evil_twin:  i did a quick search tonite before making any comments here to just try to figure out what flowers you can safely eat.  here are some i came up with:
daffodils, buttercups, delphinium, foxglove, lily of the valley, periwinkle, oleander and sweet pea

so if you ever get really hungry........LOL

woman:  now you'll have to write some stories for us on the interesting foods you'e seen your in-laws cook and eat-  there's nothing quite like a Christmas Eve in an old fashioned italian family for a real eye-opener!!!!

ui:  i buy my "greens" at the grocery store.  i'm "citi-fied" as mobil would say-
i remember that old clint eastwood movie, The Beguiled, where he is tricked into eaten poisonous mushrooms....nah, i'll get my food from the grocery store, and if i ever get caught out in the wilderness, i'll hope i'm with a boy scout!

killie girl:  nah, i'm not mad at you!  i hope you're doing a little better today.  i'm always thinking of you...

nyquill: you're right, alot of day lilies ARE edible-  in asia they're used alot.
i think she'd eaten similar flowers in the past, and just assumed these were edible too.  and i think she left the note because some part of her just wasn't sure-
that note was a very smart thing for her to do!

    new:  LOL......couldn't resist that huh?

lucy:  this happened maybe 10 years ago, and Josephine passed away about 3 or 4 years after this happened.  i was thinking of moon's "wake" stories because i remember being at her wake and listening to the re-telling of this story!  we all laughed pretty hard all over again as it was being told.

Its wonderful how something so small in the scope of a life cn outlast the person themselves and its endearing to know that it was told with humor SL.. made me smile and think of my gran!
  • quietone said on Jul 15, 2008....
well, secret, this is good to know... I won't eat my day lillies... maybe only a small nibble!  LOL  nope, never heard of such a thing!

  • tiposcettico said on Jul 16, 2008....
Years ago I worked with a chap who decided to eat the soft stuff from inside a peach pit. He said that he got all screwed up, really stoned in a bad way and was sick for several days. Not peachy keen jelly bean!
  • tiposcettico said on Jul 16, 2008....
There are many plants of which the flowers and leaves are safe to eat but not the roots or bulbs and versa visa. So please don't eat any plants unless you have done your research and are absolutely sure what you are doing!

I've toyed with the idea of having a small edible flower garden but totally ignorant about the ones that you can eat.  Some of them are great tasting (so I hear) and others are chuck full of vitamins.
You just have to know which ones.
I've worked as an fruit inspector for the State Dept. of Agriculture and even though they trained me for that specific function only you can't help but pick up some things here and there about plants.  It's quite interesting.
The Angel's trumpet flower....the plant grows like a bush and is a favorite of landscapers here in South Florida, is a member of the medicinal branch of plants (I think marijuana but not sure) and you can take the flower and get very high from it.
There is a mushroom that grows in cow pastures (mainly out of the cowdung) that is a hallucigenic (as long as you don't freeze it which takes out that property) and as a crazy teenager in the hippie days I've made tea from that mushroom and tripped out.
Not all plants are edible however and one has to be careful what the heck you eat or suffer the consequences. I used to have the dept's lab at my disposal for anylising any plant I sent samples of but since now I don't work for them anymore I don't have that anymore.
Quite interesting plants are...we get everything from them one way or another.

Yucca plants- called the ghost plant, it has a long very pointy leaf with a shot that has white blossoms up and down on it.  The roots of this plant will kill you in seconds. there are many plants you can eat only certain parts but the rest of the plant is deadly. i love the world of plants and their uses.

just got a few mintues on here before i fly away and wanted to stop by and say HI! HI.... *smile* ~see ya
