I was just reading this story at AlterNet titled: John McCain -- 61 Flip-Flops and Counting, By Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report. Posted July 10, 2008, and thought it might be an interesting first post after the energy series, that we finished with yesterday.

McCain argues that flip-flops are an example of a political leader who can't be trusted -- so he might as well drop out of the race.

Editor's Note: Writer Steve Benen has graciously compiled a comprehensive tally of John McCain's flip-flops on issues ranging from national security to energy. The following is Benen's list of 61 clear 180-degree switches by McCain on the biggest issues of the day.

Here Are The First Ten, Followed By A Link To The Other 51!!

National Security Policy

1. McCain thought Bush's warrantless wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.

2. McCain insisted that everyone, even "terrible killers," "the worst kind of scum of humanity," and detainees at Guantanamo Bay, "deserve to have some adjudication of their cases," even if that means "releasing some of them." McCain now believes the opposite.

3. He opposed indefinite detentions of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it "one of the worst decisions in the history of this country."

4. In February, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.

5. McCain favored closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay before he was against it.

6. When Barack Obama talked about going after terrorists in Pakistani mountains with Predators, McCain criticized him for it. He's since come to the opposite conclusion.

Foreign Policy

7. McCain was for kicking Russia out of the G8 before he was against it.

8. McCain supported moving "toward normalization of relations" with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.

9. McCain believed the United States should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.

10. McCain believed the United States should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.

How long ago did he have these opinions, what new information do we have that we didn't have then and what's changed in the country since he made these statements.  Without that information this is just baseless bullshit

    SeanRenaud,

You are right, but it is still fun~~kind of like watching Barack bounce around like a rubber ball as he too tries to appeal to people who he has to to get elected~just like McCain. I am only picking on McCain, because I do not like him, as a person, war "hero", or anything else. Sorry if the baseless bullshit bothered you, but they are just "politicians" after all...It is not like they are "real" people!!

Thanks for kicking my butt, and reminding me to do more in depth checking when "hating" on McCain!!

    Take Care!!

It's an honor and I do the same thing to the Barrack hate.  My biggest problem really is that we scream that our politicians aren't doing what we want them to, and then if a politician ever changes his mind to a more popular veiw point he didn't learn something new over the last ten years, he didn't change his mind because he'd been exposed to different view points.  He flip flopped and should never be trusted again!

    SeanRenaud,

    INDEED!!

We should applaud them for being able to change, as circumstances change, and thank them for  having the courage to do what is right, instead of what is expedient!!

Nice....perhaps you should check into these facts a little bit.

He was against the wiretaps BEFORE it was changed to require judicial oversight.
Numbers 2 and 3 are the same.  His opposition was to JUDICIAL ACTIVISM.  He promoted policy changes....which OCCURRED legislatively.

He has not reversed on the predators...not sure where that came from.  He still states that we can not infiltrate Pakistan.

Not sure about 7...have to look into that one.

He has been for normalization of relations with Cuba ONCE CONDITIONS ARE MET...not unconditionally.

    Not sure about number 9

He was for diplomacy with Syria BEFORE they were sending in terrorists to Iraq.  Now he's against it.

I haven't looked at the other 51, but if they are anything like these, then they are propaganda for the uneducated and the naive.

Ok....here is the deal with the predators.  His justification was an article that said:

The McCain campaign's line of the day is that Barack Obama "wants to take us back to the bad old days of going after terrorists with prosecutors rather than predators." But Obama did propose going after terrorists, which prompted McCain to accuse him of having "once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan."

Exactly where did he say that we should send predators to Pakistan?  He didn't.

It's the EXACT same technique being used against Obama.

On torture, he has not changed his opinion.  In fact, Mr. Benen quoted an article where he was accused, but the article said:

"A review of the record shows that McCain has neither changed his position on torture nor taken sides with President Bush on the substance of the issue"

On Guantonomo bay...again the article that the writer points to for justification states this:

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., agreed that the U.S. should ensure that no prisoner at Guantanamo is subjected to torture. But, he said, closing the prison is premature without a legal resolution to the prisoners’ cases.

“I don’t think they deserve a fair jury trial, but there should be some sort of adjudication” to decide whether detainees are held for life, executed or released rather than held indefinitely, McCain said.

“This administration has tried, and it’s frustrating, to get some sort of process,” McCain said. “I’m hoping we can come up with some methodology to resolve this.”

On the G8...he has not changed his position.  He stated that Russia should not be included in the g8....at NO TIME has he changed his position.  The article quoted by the writer states that a "Campaign Advisor" stated that McCain has changed his position.  They didn't even bother naming the adviser.

Perhaps before you blindly post something, you should look into at least the supporting documents quoted by the original writer...and perhaps dig a little deeper.

    Next time use your brain.
