I read a style blog, "Denim for Every Body" and felt compelled to write a less than "cheerleader" comment. I don't feel the author really made the case that Denim (jeans) fit every body-- at least not by what I'm seeing on the streets.
Read the blog for yourself at http://www.yourstylestar.com/2008/07/11/denim-for-every-body
and let me know what you think.
Please keep in mind, I'm not making judgments about body types/sizes or a person based on his or her size. I'm talking about fashion and looking fabulous no matter what your size/shape is. Here's a copy of my comment:
Hate to sound like a grinch but I'm not favorably impressed with the cut of jeans I'm seeing (on "real" people on the streets).
Hip-huggers, though slightly scandalous in the 70s, looked great on most people who wore them. The population was skinnier then. Admittedly, Twiggy inspired an unhealthy trend to over-skinniness.
Today's hip-huggers are not proportioned for bodies of those who grew up eating fast food and super-sized sodas. The question used to be, "do these pants make my butt look big?" Apparently no one realizes they should be asking, "do these pants make my butt look too small (and my love handles too big)?"
And, I disagree that the skinny jeans "provide slimming qualities." They merely reveal an already skinny body. Anyone an ounce over "skinny" will look like a stuffed sausage. (And the low-rise in all the styles look very uncomfortable.)
Ancillary to the adage, "If you've got it, flaunt it!" is to flaunt it fabulously. Design ease needs to be proportionate to the real live body.
Setting aside personal aesthetics about the cut of jeans, I gotta say, "Denim Rocks!" Although I choose not to wear jeans, I love the variety of colors, washes, surface embellishiments, embroidery, etc--what fun!
