Pen & Paper kind of RPG games that you can find in game shops and book stores. What do you look for when buying a game? What do you like? What gets your attention?
I pretty much stick to DND if I'm going to pick up a second or third (which has happened) I look for something that will separate it by a distance from standard DND. So something space or modern themed goes a long way.
1. ruleset that looks interesting--but not alien. this puts me in the vast minority of gamers, i know, but as an inveterate rules-tinkerer, i'm always interested in new mechanics. however, i also try to avoid mechanics that are non-intuitive, b/c i always want to play something that's easy for someone to pick-up.
2. known quantity designers, such as monte cook or john wick. those guys do some good work, so my expectation level is higher when i know someone like that is involved in a given project.
3. fun potential. does it look like it would be fun to play? although this is really the most important, it requires a certain minimum threshold re: mechanics that seem to make sense as well as interesting details for that game.
