I think I dislike doctors even more than I do lawyers.  I went to my doctor earlier today and was told that they couldn't find any cause for my problem last week and that everything looks fine.  I have undergone every imaginable test and examination, but they want to keep doing more tests.  Their attitude seems to be that if we keep poking and prodding we will no doubt uncover something, anything to justify all the poking and prodding.  I'm done with it.   Yes doctors and health care providers do order tests and examinations purely for the purpose of generating revenue.  Don't ever doubt that.  As long as your insurance carrier is still willing to pay they will continue to probe.

The problem is that inssurance carriers genrerally follow the guidlines established by various government agencies as best practice guidlines.  Who establishes these guidlines?  Doctors and healthcare providers of course.

Anyway there it is, I go to the doctor and he tells me they find nothing wrong.  Instead of being happy, he insists that we do more tests.  He was offended when I commented, "Must be  the insurance company is till paying huh?"

I instructed my doctor to give my family the facts and only the facts.  I told him to not try to lead them into his trap, insisting that more testing may reveal something.  Done I tell ya, I'm done.

    i completely agree with you-
there's never a point where the doctors willingly stop ordering tests as long as insurance keeps paying-
it's not like the old days where a doctor was looking out for your best interests anymore.  YOU have to look out for that these days.

I don't doubt that they are in this for the money, but you strike me as the same person who would sue their pants off if next week one of your family got violently ill and it could have been prevented had the doctor ran one more test.

Aw Soaring. I feel your frustration and I sympathize. There is an element of truth in what you write and I am halfway with you. I avoid the whole medical scene whenever possible but I try not to be self destructive about it. Do you like and trust your Doctor. If not, you need to find one you do trust. One that sees you as a person and not an income producer. I do believe a few of these still exist and I hope you will find one. That said, you are probably just fine and what happened was a freak thing that has a simple explanation. How are you feeling right now? Honestly. We want you around here for a long time. And. I for one am happy they found nothing!

As Sean alluded to, I know doctors run a lot of tests in order to cover their own asses if something goes wrong.

You have every right to refuse any test that is ordered.  I've done it.  They didn't like it, but that's tough.

I also think patients' families are good at "forcing" them to undergo unnecessary tests.  All with the best of intentions of course, but they do it.  It's your body, and your health.  You have the final say.

  • SeanRenaud said on Jul 10, 2008....
Just did back reading.  Okay they find you on the floor, doctors can't figure out what's wrong and want to run more tests?  Shit you should be demanding they re-run all the ones hat they have run and whatever new ones they want because obviously something is wrong.

Ultimately it is your life though.

I have had the opposite experience with doctors, but then, we're on different ends of the insurance spectrum as well, so what you say makes sense.

It is your life. If you're done being poked and prodded, then that's it, my friend. They should respect your wishes, and I've no doubt you can make your voice heard when you need to do so. ;-)

Soaring.  I am sorry that you feel this way but I am sure they are just trying to do their job well. Anyway it often feels that we are just guinea pigs in their hands. I hope all will be alright with you. Better to be on the safe side. Luv J

Well we are guinea pigs.  Medicine is practiced but never perfected.

yes, I agree.... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thats my motto anyway.  Good luck soaaring.. hope everything remains okay.

secretlife  -  Yes, draw water until the well runs dry.

SeanRenaud  -  I find it interesting that one who does not know me from Adam would presume to know what I might do in the unfortunate circumstance of aloved one taken ill next week or at any other time.   For your information I refused to file litigation for malpractice in the wake of my late wife's recent illness and death when I clearly had cause.  At least according to my attorneys who were clamoring for the chance to litigate.   Your comments were both presumptuous and ignorant.

woman  -  I am certainly not being at all self destructive in this matter.  The doctors have told me without reservation that there is nothing wrong with me, yet still desire to do more testing.  Only one reason for that, the insurance will still pay and they have admitted as much.

MissMimi  -  There is a distinct difference between covering all bases and milking the system for all it is worth.

the infernal optimist  -  I have observed healthcare professionals bilk insurance carriers, government agencies like medicare, medicaid and va running test after test while dehying adequate care to those with limited or no coverage.  It is they who have run the cost of healthcare up beyond the reach of the folk.

skald  -  There is the guinea pig aspect, but more often than not it is pure greed that drive them to over prescribe testing.

quietone  -  There certainly times when testing is called for, but there is also a time when enough is simply enough.

Once again, I am fine.  I understand what happened that morning.  The doctors look at you with that superior attitude and just tell you, "I'll be the doctor here today, thank you."  when you try to explain what happened and that there is no real reason for concern.  They see a well insured patient come through the door and they go "Cha Ching!"  Simple as that.

As well they should.  Congrats on not being a complete douche and runing some doctors life.  It's kinda sad that the world is so fucked up that you actually deserve congratulations for not being evil.
  • woman said on Jul 10, 2008....
Ok Soaring. If you are fine, you are fine. Ignore that greedy Doctor! Personally, I put off the Drs. as long as possible, including tests. My one exception is treatment for diabetes. And even then I should go more often. I still hope you have a Doctor you can trust and be comfortable with. It makes it a little more pleasant.
  • polarheart said on Jul 10, 2008....
Soaring, I am sorry for your situation, it really is not at all pleasant.  What struck me when I got ill in Iceland and came back home to the UK and had two blood tests done, testing absolutely everything under the sun, they said it showed that I had NO inflamation and NO virus.  I explained to the Dr at the hospital, "but that is exactly how I feel inside. . .I feel inflamed internally".  Almost as soon as I got anti-inflammatories and anti-biotics (which my GP still cant understand why the hospital gave them to me) the pain was alleviated.
So, now I ask you: How come?  It does not seem to me that every test reveals exactly what it should!!!!  I think some of us know our bodies better and I wish you well with regards to your decision :-)

Although I don't know what you look like, I could imagine a personality like yours saying that witty remark to a doctor catching them totally off guard. I love it! Give them a taste of their own medicine. Pun sort of intended. =)

yeah ive got a problem with doctors too. I was hit by a car (my blog story) and it seemed the docs put you through more things than they need too. I think its just a way to bill you for more money. I had to go through physical rehabilitation and they were evil.
