The baking day that almost didn't happen.  Uniquely-ironic was kind enough to send me some starter for Amish Friendship Bread last week.  I showered it with tender loving care all week, and today was the big day.

But alas, no instant vanilla pudding to be found in the house.  It being a key ingredient in the recipe, and today being the big day to bake, last night I sent mrMimi out on a pilgrimage to the grocery store in search of pudding.  My directions were clearly stated, or so I thought:  one large box, or two small boxes of instant vanilla pudding.  And get the store brand, just because I'm cheap.

Now mrMimi has many fine qualities, but he is still in remedial grocery shopping class.  I felt that this was a fairly straightforward task, but I've been wrong before.  So off he went into the wilds of the grocery store.  A short time later, he returns with his purchase.  Is this what you wanted?  One small box of instant pudding.

Well, I said, that's good, honey, but I need two small boxes or one large one.

This is all they had.

What do mean, this is all they had?

I thought you said one small or large box of instant pudding.  Isn't that what you said?

No, I said one large or two small boxes.

Oh.  Do you want me to go back?

Yes, sweetums, I'd really appreciate it.  And I smiled, you know, one of those really toothy grins that means you're holding onto your sanity by a thread.

So mrMimi sets off again for the pudding which by now is rapidly becoming more trouble than it's worth.   He returns a short time later, with his purchase, and a hopeful look on his face.

Success!  Good job, honey!

So this afternoon, with pudding in hand, I put all the ingredients together, and baked unique's friendship bread.  I carefully set aside four little bags of starter to share, and so the friendship circle continues.

The house smelled wonderfully of cinnamon all afternoon, and mrMimi pronounced the bread delicious.  I sliced it up, and he's taking it to work tomorrow.

Thanks, uni, for sending it to me.  The bread was yummy, and it was fun to think about sharing stuff like this with another SoulCaster, AND mrMimi now knows where to find pudding.

Life is good.

That was sweet of uniquely-ironic to send you the starter bread--and sweet of MrMimi to go out a second time to get what you needed.  I bet the bread was delicious, from the sound of it looking at some of the ingredients you mentioned!

Yay!!!!!  The bread turned out!!  I love how it smells when it bakes.  Mine turned out better this batch than last.  While it was cooling that vile man I live with cut out 2 slices from the middle of the loaf.  My daughter left her starter at her dads, so we only had one batch.  We will start another round of it today.

I had to really laugh about the remedial shopping comment.  I would not have dared to send Bill out for such a task.  He'd end up bringing back 40 different types of pudding mix, none the right one, and about $70 in exotic juices for "his trouble". :)

wombie -- yes, i agree, mrMimi is a good sport, no doubt about it.

ed -- yes, it was a fun thing to do.  :)  Do YOU need remedial shopping class too?

uni -- The house smelled really good.  I haven't baked anything by cherry pies for a long time, and it was kind of fun to get my hands and face (and shirt and floor and...) all floury again.

The middle of the loaf?  That's a punishable offense in my house.  I'd have to get out the Big Bad Spoon and smack him with it.

that is so funny! I am not sure what the trouble is, not all guys have this problem..but when I went to nc, I asked my husband to water the flower pots..it has been really hot and humid...he says he did....but then how come they are dead?
also I asked him to trim back a bush up in my garden so that the part of it that dies off would be less noticeable. What he did instead was trim back the butterfly bushes so that they were all the same height...only problem is...he cut off all the blooms and that is what attracts the butterflies.
I would NEVER ask him to find pudding. no. nope.
    enjoy your bread!!

    Cotterall's Bread Pudding

from my personal collection of recipes:

6 slices old rye bread, dried or toasted and ripped into large chunks
    1/2 cup brown sugar
3 large eggs at room temperature, beaten
4 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1/4 cup white rum or brandy
    2 cups milk, warmed up
1/2 teaspoon pure Madagascan vanilla extract
2 tablespoons pure corn oil or olive oil (NOT EXTRA-VIRGIN)
    Pam cooking spray
    cornstarch
a large square pan, fairly deep or round casserole dish.
    raisins or almonds (optional)

Preheat over to 375 degrees F.

Grease casserole dish by spraying with Pam or wiping with a little oil.  Warm up milk in microwave and add vanilla and liquor.  Place apple slices in water with pinch of salt and vinegar or lemon juice to cover.  Meanwhile, heat up a large pan over medium heat.  Add oil.  Fry bread.  Sprinkle with sugar  Cook till lightly browned.  Place on bottom on pan, one-half the amount.  Layer apple slices over the bread.  If you like sprinkle raisins or almonds.  Add sugar sprinkles.  Layer bread again and apple slices.  Sprinkle with sugar and follow with almonds and raisins.  If skipping, add some bread crumbs mixed with brown sugar on top.  Add eggs to milk carefully, making certain milk is warm and not hot (1 minute in microwave should do it).  Thicken a little with cornstarch mixed with water, up to one tablespoon.  Pour over the mixture.  Place foil over the casserole pan.  Bake in a pan with one inch of water for forty-five minutes.

Can be served hot or cold.  Let settle for fifteen minutes first.  Good with sweetened yoghurt or ice milk.
