The great oil shock of 2008 is bad enough for us. It poses a mortal threat to the whole economic strategy of emerging Asia.  source

China wants and needs oil.....big time! This is a ticking timebomb......will they call in our debt? Will they find enough allies to fuel their energy needs? Will they invade another country to get what they need?
No doubt about it....China is not ready to go back in time and become the poor third world nation they once were.

I would guess the US is already watching China.

china's got other issues as well, such as a predominantly male population that's coming of age in a few years and will be able to enter military service.

this makes china unpredictable and potentially quite violent in around half a decade.

I don't see you being so far off D. And with Bush making our boys so busy in 2 different countries and a threat from another that we can't address b/c of our bussiness in the other 2, I can see us getting attacked too. I'm glad this idiot is leavin in 09'. God, we let him scare us into re-electing him to destroy our country to the point that our economy is failing and we are on the verge of seeing a repeat of 1929 where people were jumping out of windows, killing themselves. I hope he goes like Reagan.

Dark times Bush has created. Dark times due to his and Cheney's greed due to come. Obama or McCain either one is going to have quite the mess to clean up. But I pray they don't use Iraq to get another term. I pray they bring our Husband, wives, sons, daughters, children home;)

China seems to be a country driven by a logic, they aren't going to do anything stupid.  It's also a gross exageration that we are on the verge of a 1929 redux and a lot of what's wrong with the world has nothing to do with Bush.  Sorry.
  • cotterall&elaineadams said on Jul 09, 2008....
Nothing against the Chinese but their government and military are paranoid.  They are convinced they must occupy Tibet to prevent a (nonexistent) threat from India.  India is interested in Pakistan and Kashmir, not China.  Heaven knows it is stupid but that is how it is.  It is all stupid.  Why occupy a small mountainous country with Buddhist tribes?  It is silly to hold hostage a religious, pastoral group of people who are more concerned about family, making clothing, getting food and practicing their culture and faith than bombs and armies.  The Tibetans do not pose a threat to China at all.

There will not be a WWIII.  There will be more occupations and ethnic conflicts.  There may be militancy off and on.  I fear that cities in Europe will be overrun with private security, police officers and a military presence.
  • ALIENated said on Jul 09, 2008....

Europe is being overrun with Muslims. WWIII will be a religious war, not
a war over oil. Within a year, if the oil prices stay where they are or keep
going up, we will start moving to other forms of transportation or more
efficient forms. Generating electricity from something other than oil is easy
and heating homes with something other than oil is easy. You just have to
spend a little money to convert, but then it will pay for itself. We are simply
at a point where things are being forced to change. The oil producers flirt
with higher prices and just when people get serious about moving to something
else, the prices drop back. We just need to keep moving away once and for
all. And, as Sean said, to blame Bush for all that is going on is assinine. Do
you ever praise him for keeping us terrorist attack free since 9/11? The
main problem with Bush is liberals and the liberal media hate him, and they
have convenced the weak minded to hate him as well. And maybe he has
more knowledge about all the things that are going on than the average
Joe Blow on the street has, which is true of all presidents. Speculators
are to blame for the oil price problem, not Bush. Bush is urging congress
all the time to drill off shore and domestically, but all the Democrats are
owned by some oil sheik or special interest group.

There is no proof that Bush kept us safe from terrorist attacks.  He may have just gotten lucky in the same way that he got unlucky by being the president when 9/11 hit.

Aside fro that we can throw out ideas on what will be the cause of WW3 till the cows come home but we wont' know until it's in the past.  If it's over oil it could be relatively soon, if it's over relgiion it'll have to wait another thirty years.

I disagree with Alien!  It will be over oil!
  • SeanRenaud said on Jul 09, 2008....
Pray that you're right.  A true war over oil would likely be relatively quick and would lead to several major changes in the political landscape some of which we cant' even properly guess right now.

that's the rub isnt it Sean? There is no way of knowing if having protection has done you any good.....you only know that you should have had it when something goes wrong.....but that is why we have insurance, guns and condoms isn't it?

d6: if you can't actually prove that spending untold billions has actually accomplished a blessed thing, i as a taxpayer have a really, really big problem with that.

Pull that wool down a little tighter over those eyes. Turn up CNN
and MSNBC. Your indoctrination is almost complete.

Bush has many shortcomings, but national defense is not one of
    them.

  • silverwhisper said on Jul 10, 2008....
how precisely has bush kept us safe, alienated? can you point to any foiled attacks, attacks foiled by things directly attributable to bush?

    no, you can't, can you?

  • ALIENated said on Jul 10, 2008....

God you are such a moron. Bush is a president. No president does anything
directly. They just supply the leadership. For example, Oblahma will lead us
into hell with his bad leadership and stupidity. Bush has supplied the leadership
and willingness to do whatever it takes to stop terrorism. The very fact that
his policies have been successful is working against him. It does not take long
to uncover details about all the attacks that have been thwarted since 9/11.
Here is just one of many sites that list the many attacks that could have
happened (and probably would have under someone like Borax) ...

    http://www.sptimes.com/2003/01/11/Worldandnation/100_terror_attacks_th.shtml

If you need more, look at some of these ...

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=thwarted+attacks+on+the+U.S.

WASHINGTON -- Federal authorities said Friday that more than 100 terrorist
attacks planned against the United States and its allies have been thwarted
since Sept. 11, 2001, due in large part to the continuing interrogation of
enemy combatants and other captives ensnared in the war on terror.

I know. Those are all conservative propaganda sites. Just pull the wool back
down over your eyes and go back to sleep. Hopefully, you will sleep through
the election and be one less moron voting for Oblahma.

  • silverwhisper said on Jul 11, 2008....
i like how none of the sources you cite agree on how many attacks actually were thwarted, which calls into question most of their reliability. i also find it funny that in the second link, in one of the top 10 results, clinton said his administration foiled 4. so clinton stopped 4 bin laden attacks, bush stopped 0.

the st petersburg article is goofy: notice the dateline. it was a damage control piece in the wake of abu ghraib.

it never fails to amaze me how fast you swallow the kool aid, alien.

I said look at some of those. You throw out a net, you are going to
get some tin cans and old boots. They do not agree because different
agencies are probably involved in different cases. But you know all that.
It is easy enough to debate either way. I just know we have not had
another major attack since 9/11 and Bush has been our leader since then,
so he gets the credit. Some of the same people investigating now were
probably investigating under Clinton as well. Just because Clinton was a
smuck does not mean our agencies were not doing their jobs in spite of
his lack of leadership. Unlike you, I still have faith in the American people
even when a Democrat is at the top of the heap. I hope you and bloc
noticed that attacks are stopped due in large part to the continuing
interrogation of enemy combatants. Not by letting them use our courts
    against us.
