Today I was basking in the sun. The waves made hypnotic music and the warmth of the sand was comforting. I did not burn and I did not worry about how I looked in a swimsuit. Really. This was possible because I was only in this peaceful setting in my mind. I was actually in a sealed room, surrounded by a loudly chattering MRI. I couldn't move my body from that confining and uncomfortable place, so I moved my mind. Put me in the dental chair for some intensive work and you will find me on the same beach, escaping from the dentist. On my drive back home (to my remodeling chaos) I was wondering where YOU go when reality is less than wonderful. Or do most of you stay right there and deal the best you can? For me, the beach is better.

My mind takes me into a fantasy world, a place I've run to since I was a child. Faeries, forests, starlight, flying, sparkling lakes, music.
I go there as often as I can.

Right now I'm trying to deal with things, although I use self hypnosis to ease stress as much as I can and read a lot, thats my escape.

this~What a magical place your mind has provided for you. It sounds lovely.
  • woman said on Jul 09, 2008....
Lucy~I usually try to deal to, but when I'm uncomfortable during something like a medical procedure, I see no reason to hang around. By the way, I hope things are better for you soon.

sometimes i think the only way to survive the medical stuff is to "exit" to another place in our heads.  whether it be somewhere in the past or somewhere we've never been but dreamed of going.......escape is a wonderful thing.

hope you made out ok with your MRI.

I'm with you secret. I got through it ok but like most people, I hate having tests done. It was just for a shoulder problem, probably related to my friend diabetes.

That is a great gift you have. Never, never loose it. I go places too.

I escape to places in my head all the time... even at work.  yes, it is beautiful there!  :)

I journal when things are getting to be too much.  Writing has helped me a lot over the years.  I used to write a lot of poetry for that reason.

I do have my own little fantasy world too.  I'm popular, funny, thin and fabulously rich.  Hey, if I can dream it, I can be it.  Right?  :-)

I'm hoping you get good news from the MRI.

Skald~What a lovely thing to say. Not to worry, this overactive imagination is here to stay.

Quietone~Good. Now tell me about that beautiful place.

Generally speaking when I am undergoing such procedures I like to be fully aware and vigilant.

When I choose to make my escape is when I am compelled to attend some boring seminar and listen to a boring speaker drone on endlessly about much of nothing.  In such cases I tend to wander off to some remote mountain lodge near a babbling brook where I can lazily while away my time pretending to fish (Pole propped up, line dangling in the stream but not payng much attention.) and daydreaming of yet another place even more remote.

Creataive woman~Of course writing is an escape and I also use that. Poetry flows easily when there is a need to express the unexpressable. Lying in the MRI room, or at the dentist, it is a little tough to do! I'm not worried about the test, it's not lifethreatening, just a little thing. And CW. You keep dreaming. No doubt you are those things already.

Soaring~I loved your description of your retreat, so lovely. I also understand the need to be alert for procedures but anymore I just leave and put it in God's hands. What power do I have?

I would love to be able to actually go to the beach....but yes, I used to go to the lake at my special cove, and listen to the waves lapping up on the shore.  I now have a sound machine that makes that noise, and I turn it on when I can't sleep.

My mind rambles so much that I go "to that special place in my mind" all the time.  It changes from second to second.....I need my lake!

Being near a lake or an ocean is such a moving experience. I hope you can really go there soon.

If imagination is virtual reality then I spend much of my days there. For peaceful settings I think back to my trips in the mountains or the forest where I can relax and feel like a small part of something very big. Particularly on the mountain tops when no one is around I feel most at peace.
  • woman said on Jul 09, 2008....
hotaka~That is such a lovely place to go. I know just what you mean about feeling like a small part of something huge. I feel that way both in the mountains and by the ocean. It is humbling and renewing.

Silver~If you're weird, I'm weird. What is your world like?( And you know, sometimes lately, it seems the real world is often too much.)
