I have this habit of waking up in the middle of the night, just to check on things around my house. Namely my daughter. I'm a little paranoid sometimes. But I just feel better knowing she's in bed where she's supposed to be.

So last night I walked down the hall and looked in her room. I found the bed empty. I look around on the floor (which was filled with clothes and other crap--she needs to clean her room)

I didn't find her.

So I walked out to the living room to see if she was there instead. It was very dark, and I ended up slamming into the coffee table. We had some empty soda cans sitting there, and they went clanging to the ground.

I cursed under my breath, then made my way towards the kitchen so I could turn on the light. I kicked a fan we had sitting there and jammed my toes into the metal vents. That felt good.

But I got the light turned on at least. And I found my daughter sleeping on the couch. I had no idea why, but I figured I'd leave her there. So I turned off the light, carefully tried to avoid the fan and the coffee table.

Instead I misjudged the corner and ran into the entertainment center. I knocked a bunch of shit down onto my head. I cursed again and wondered if my house was booby trapped.

I made a ton of racket, swearing included, yet my daughter never woke up. It must be nice to sleep like that.

I trudged back to bed, slightly beat up and totally awake at this point. I couldn't get back to sleep for awhile. My head started filling with stressful things that don't let me sleep.

Plus my eye was twitching. It's been twitching since yesterday afternoon. It's driving me insane.

Finally I did get back to sleep though. And in the morning I found out that my daughter had a fly in her bedroom. That's why she was sleeping on the couch.

So essentially a fly ruined a perfectly good nights sleep for me.

How'd you sleep last night? Does anyone else get up in the middle of the night to check things out, or is that just me?

I get up to check on things sometimes, but our living room is full of toys and rather cramped, so I'm always tripping over stuff (it does no good to pick it all up every day, so sometimes I don't bother :-p). I always just pray I don't hit any of the half-dozen toys that play loud music or make other annoying noises!

A fly...wow. She couldn't sleep through its buzzing and flying around, but she slept through your stumbling journey?

I've always been a rock-sound sleeper like your daughter. Some years ago, when I worked as security guard during the night shift, I developed odd habits as I also worked during the day (part time).  Since then I've had trouble sleeping an entire night without waking up and doing some walking around (mostly out of boredom) but similar to night patrols I did during my job.
I'm still working graveyard shifts and what started as necessity is now preferred work hours as there's no traffic (even though mostly I'm taking the train to save on gas  money) coming and going from work.  That has been my major complain about living in a congested metropolitan area like South Florida.
One solution for your next night's adventure patrol of the house.
Use night lights placed on key areas around the house.  Turning them on will only burn pennies a night of kilowatts and you can even get the ones with a light sensor that turn themselves on.

hinana....I was definitely half asleep. And our house is apparently more of a messy hazard at night in the dark than it is during the day!

Infernally....you make an excellent point there. She couldn't sleep because of a fly, but she didn't even move a muscle when I was crashing around and knocking things over and swearing. Figures!

RollingC......nightlights are a good idea. We actually have them in the bathroom, the kitchen, and my daughters room. But none in the living room. We might need to fix that!

I don't really wake up to check the place out, but if I had a kid I might. The only time I ever do that is if I hear a noise and I want to see what it was. Usually it's the cats though and they always seem really annoyed that I've disturbed something private they were doing. But I am always running into things in the dark.

A few weeks ago, we were going to go bed, so we turned all the lights out in the living room, and headed off down the hall. But I didn't give myself quite enough room and I smacked right into the wall :-P We'd both make horrible blind people wouldn't we?

Kyle.....we would make terrible blind people. I have trouble enough not running into things during the day when I can actually see!

I'm up a couple of times during the night, but not to check on the kids.  I'm a light sleeper and we live by a busy street.  I learned long ago that if you're going to walk around in the dark that you need to slide your feet slowly.  This way it cuts down on the number of injuries. ;)

It also helps if you got a flashlight close at hand.  :^)

Thank God she was sleeping on the couch when you found her it would have really sucked had she been sleeping on the floor of that dark hallway. You could have tripped on that ball and chain you have attached to her ankle  ;0)

I am completely night blind so when it is dark i am constantly running into walls, trees, posts, people.... i really need to get my glasses.  I used to be a deep sleeper like your girl, but now it totally depends. If the fly was landing on her or something it would probably bug her more than noise.

In case I get up to go to the loo, I make a quick glance around the house to check if everything is as it should be. i leave a night lamp of an extremely small wattage on all night at a strategic corner in the house - so that it sheds light in case I need to look around.
Better to light a small lamp  than curse the darkness.

    Urgh.  It's 8 a.m. and I am NOT happy! :p

Our bed creaks.  Not just like "squeaky...squeak" but like CREEEEAAAK whenever my husband turns over, which he does a lot.  He's really restless right before he wakes up, especially.  So I always get woken up about a half hour before he does by the stupid bed, and can't get back to sleep because he can't be still.  Plus he steals the covers every time he rolls over.  And snores because he has chronic sinusitis.  And whacks me in the face on occasion.

Plus it's summer and the sun rises at 4:30 like a frickin' shark with a frickin' laser beam on its frickin' head.  Ow.

And then - and THEN! the STUPID radio he uses for his "pre-alarm alarm" is up WAY too loud.  It woke me up at 5:30 and the alarm doesn't go off until 6:00.  Of course he slept right through it (...bugger!)  And I don't want to wake him up to fix it (the radio is on his side) because he has to get up and go to work and I don't.

I love how he complains about being tired, though, and conveniently forgets that I need around an hour MORE sleep than he does and get about an hour LESS, even on weekends.

But now I'll have "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" in my head all day.  Better than the Llama song I guess, which has been stuck in my head the past week or so!

As to your nighttime patrols, I know my dad used to check on me at night too.  I think it's just a dad thing.  I was an only daughter, too; I bet that makes dads worry a bit more.  Even when I was in high school he would get up every night at 3 or 4 a.m.  He didn't always check on me then but he would still wake up like he used to.  Get up, use the bathroom, maybe peek in on me, go check all the door locks, go back to bed.  He always says he's been a light sleeper ever since the day I was born and that even now when he sleeps a part of his brain is "listening for the baby."  And I just turned 23!

Ms. Ironic....I've learned my lesson. Slower, more careful steps is the way to go!

Rolling C....I need to get batteries for our flashlight....

Miss Paranoia......I guess the fly ruined my daughters sleep too. At least until she made it to the couch, then it was my turn.

Cayenne Man.....it's funny you mentioned her sleeping in the hallway, because apparently that was her first idea. She said she planned to sleep in front our bedroom door. And once I tripped over her sleeping in the hallway in front of her door. But no, she has no ball and chain. Maybe when she's a teenager though? ;-)

wish.....you're probably right that the fly was probably landing on her and driving her nuts. Because apparently noise doesn't bother her!

scipio.....I think we will get a nightlight for the living room. It would definitely help.

Nytquill......I do think it's a dad thing to check on their little girls. You hear so many horror stories so I'm just paranoid. She's scared me a few times too. For some reason she just can't stay in her bed most nights. But I hope I won't still be doing this when she's 23!

Whoever booby trapped your house did the same thing to mine.  I swear the corners of my walls move out a foot further in the dark, and door frames must shrink since I can't seem to navigate around either in the dark....okay I admit it....even in the light.  I always have at least one bruise from running into something on my body.  Usually on my stupid spindly elbows or gangly legs!  I'm sure it's quite attractive lol!  glad you found your daughter though!  Sorry about the bad nights sleep!
