I didn't spend $40 to get the pay per view live. I rarely do. Wish I had enough money that it wouldn't matter. I'll spend the money to see Fedor on July 19th. Without him on the card, it doesn't seem worth it to me. He's the champ in the main division. He's the Muhammad Ali, the Joe Louis, the Rocky Marciano. Without Fedor, what's the point? It's a stupid fuckin sport when the undefeated heavyweight champ doesn't get to be in it.
The first fight of the night (I get the results from Sherdog and other sites on line) was Justin Buchholz vs. Corey Hill. Justin had an 8-1 record. He was 8-0 against unfamiliar names, then got choked out by Handsome Matt Wiman who was an also-ran on TUF. Now he was given the chance against another TUF alumnus.
Who can forget Corey Hill? Big tall gawky nut. Talked to himself loudly, in fact shouted to himself. Had no training at all, didn't know an armbar from a potato peeler. Skinny as hell. Had a 2-0 record in professional MMA, not counting his record in TUF.
Hill was doing a good job but his inability to master the technical aspects of jiu jitsu cost him the fight. His aggressiveness didn't save him. He was winning the fight by a small margin when Buchholz managed to get on Hill's back. Then Buchholz got the rear naked choke, Hill tapped, and that was that. Hill's jiu jitsu weakness cost him the fight. He's not good enough at it to give up his back and still win.
Melvin Guillard vs. Dennis Siver. Guillard is a hard hitting black guy who is vulnerable to getting choked out. Siver is a jiu jitsu guy from Germany who did well enough there to get a UFC contract. Guillard quickly socked Siver and knocked him down, but Siver countered by using his jitz to get Guillard in an armbar. For a change Guillard got out of the hold. Maybe Guillard panics less in an armbar than he does in a choke. Guillard pulled away and let Siver get off the ground. Then Guillard rushed in again and beat his ass with punches, something he does well, and the fight was over. Siver was down a long time.
Jorge Gurgel vs. Cole Miller. Gurgel got a lot of submissions before joining the UFC, then went 3-2 in the UFC, all by decision, no big-name opponents. Cole Miller was similar, getting submissions, then catching the interest of the UFC. He was invited to be in TUF but didn't win the tournament. He was 2-1 in the UFC including a win over popular Leonard Garcia by decision. Garcia is a pisser, never stops coming at you, doesn't care who you are, gave Roger Huerta a great fight, and never stops smiling. Garcia is more interesting than Cole Miller and Jorge Gurgel.
Sometimes the guys on the undercard have more interesting fights than the guys in the main events. Gurgel and Miller were all over each other. Finally in the third round Cole Miller won by triangle choke.
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Justin McCully. Gonzaga is a cream of the crop Brazilian picked up by the UFC a few years ago. His claim to fame was when he Cro Copped Cro Cop with a roundhouse kick to the head. This got him the title shot with Randy Couture that Dana White hoped to give to Cro Cop. Couture beat Gonzaga up, which was an upset since nobody ever really bought into the invincibility of Couture, not after Chuck Liddell 2 and 3.
If this was a horserace you'd say that McCully was rising in class. He never came close to fighting for a world championship the way Gonzaga did. He never Cro Copped Cro Cop. Looking at his inactivity over a 6 year period he seems to be one of these guys who quit MMA because there was no money in it, and came back now because the top guys are making some real money now.
It took Gonzaga two minutes to kimura the guy. Quick finish. Maybe Gonzaga will get to be closer to the main event now, not so deep on the undercard that they don't even plan to televise it.
Tyson Griffin pitched a shutout over Marcus Aurelio. Sounds like a cross between an eagle and a lion slashing up a Roman centurion. For me, Tyson Griffin's greatest accomplishment was being the only guy to ever beat smaller Urijah Faber. Griffin and Aurelio are both top level fighters, and Griffin is a bit better.
Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Lytle. This sounded like a mismatch on paper because Koscheck is championship material and Lytle is not. Koscheck beat him up badly and caused a lot of bleeding. Koscheck went the distance with GSP and Diego Sanchez, getting a decision over Sanchez. You know he has to be good. Lytle fought a lot of top guys but lost to most of them, like Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Thiago Alves, Joe Riggs, Karo Parisyan, Robbie Lawlor, Nick Diaz and Shonie Carter. So Chris Lytle is the guy who loses to the best guys, and he adds Koscheck to the list of top guys who beat him. This was the easiest fight on the card to predict.
Joe Stevenson vs. Gleison Tibau. Stevenson got caught in an omoplata in the first round, but when was the last time you ever saw somebody lose because he got caught in an omoplata. I can't remember ever seeing it. Trapping a shoulder isn't exactly like trapping someone's throat. Stevenson ended up catching Tibau in a guillotine choke. The end. Stevenson had a 13-1 streak going before B.J. Penn beat him up. Tibau is a Brazilian who was declared a decision loser to Tyson Griffin in a close fight and also lost to Nick Diaz.
Ricardo Almeida vs. Patrick Cote. Cote was given a split decision win. The main difference seems to be that Almeida gassed out, so Cote was more impressive to the judges. An uninspiring fight. Almeida is apparently a Brazilian coming from the Brazilian town of Weehawken New Jersey. Cote now has an impressive 5 fight win streak including victims Drew McFedries, Kendall Grove, Jason Day and Scott Smith.
Finally, the headline event, lightheavyweight champ Quinton Rampage Jackson vs. challenger Forrest Griffin. Rampage is best known for his two knockout wins over Chuck Liddell. Forrest is best known for his exciting TUF win over Stephon Bonnar (however he spells those two names) and Shogun Rua. Forrest's win over Shogun seems to indicate that a really hard working guy can take a guy with a big reputation and loads of talent.
When I was a kid, some guy was telling me that he knew how to beat up black guys in street fights, he had this unbeatable system. All you do is kick the legs. His theory, battle tested, was that black guys are vulnerable to leg kicks. I always remembered that because it sounded so stupid, but I suppose there's some sense to it if you express it differently and say that when you are up against a bigger, stronger, faster guy, one thing you can do is slow him down and take the heart out of him by kicking him in the legs over and over, same spot.
Forrest Griffin kicked Rampage's legs over and over. That's why he won the fight. He got a decision. Rampage gallantly reported that Forrest whooped his ass. Reminds me of how Antonio Inoki beat the crap out of Muhammad Ali by kicking him in the legs over and over. That one went down officially as a draw, but bullshit, Inoki beat the crap out of Ali, a one-sided execution. See? Kick him in the shins. Even kick him in the thigh if you want. Chop that tree down.
Reminds me of the things I comically yell out when I'm watching a fight and pretending to be a coach. I'll yell "give him a zetz" or "punch him inna la bonza" or "kick him in the balls" or "kick him in the ass".
I'm not about to pay forty bucks to see Forrest Griffin kick Rampage Jackson in the legs for 25 minutes. The only thing I'm prepared to pay forty bucks to see is the only guy in MMA who is bigger than the sport, Fedor Emelianenko. This sport is so fucked up when they won't give Rocky Marciano a chance to fight. What's the point of it all if you don't let the toughest fighter in the world get in there? Why are we watching the rest of these boobies?
They say that Fedor isn't the top guy anymore. Well, whatever. Prove it. Before I will crown Spider Silva the best fighter in the world, I have to see somebody beat Fedor. There is only one king of this sport and the rest are wayyyyyyyyy below him til someone proves otherwise. Fedor kills Spider fuckin Silva. Well, let's see if he still does. Let's see what a ring rusty Fedor Emelianenko can do with Tim The Klutz Sylvia. Two years ago Fedor would have knocked Timmy into the third row. No contest. Timmy didn't belong in the same ring as the Russian Pillsbury Dough Boy. Let's see if Fedor Emelianenko is still Fedor Emelianenko. I'm buying that PPV on July 19th. Spider Silva my ass. Do you believe they are matching Spider with fucking James Irvin? James fucking Irvin? That's not a headliner. That's feeding James fucking Irvin to the dogs. Stephan Bonnar, Lodune Sincaid, and Mike Kyle beat Irvin. Who? Yeah that's my point.
