He spends most of the day looking through the window of his hospital room at the patch of asphalt over which trucks are traveling point A to point B. It takes only three seconds for each truck to rumble by before disappearing from view. Perhaps the explanation for this lies hidden in the hieroglyphics etched on the walls of Siberian caves depicting the triumphs of those who made it possible for him to arrive at this particular place and time after centuries of non-existence.
