The project started out as a simple change of cabinets in the kitchen. That is definately not what is happening at this point. The first adjustment came when I realized factory produced cabinets are to restrictive and just would not fit into the plans I had in mind. That meant an upgrade to custom cabinets. Next was the realization that the layout of the kitchen would be much superior if we just removed a wall that created a hallway to the back door. Then it seemed to make a lot of sense to move the backdoor to the other side of the kitchen. Moving the wall made it necessary to choose new flooring. In make the flooring choice it became evident that space would be better utelized by removing the wall between the dining room and the front hall. The changes to the back hall meant a necessary change to the laundry room and main floor bath.
With all the new going on in the kitchen the laundry room and bath would look shabby. Since we are going to change the fixtures in there we might as well re-arrange the the area and create a spot for the jaccuzi tub and of course that would mean a shower would be necessary. With those additions there would be no room left for the laundry so we are reducing the living room in order to facilitate that. Then we went outside and realized that the interlocking brick that makes the front sidewalk is starting to dislodge. As we looked at we realized that the entire front walk and landing needed a redo also.
I've always wanted a front porch so we are going to have one. Of course a front porch is way more fun if there is a set of garden doors from the dining room. Changing the window there will look rather strange so the windows on the front of the house will all have to be changed. The siding had to come off the front face of the house so it will have to be replaced also. Back inside the house it is very evident that the new flooring that will go in the entry way will make the marvelous dirty orange 1970 carpet on the stairs look even worse than it already did. It then is obvious that the upper landing will have to be changed as well.
What started as just a little project has blossomed. Oh, I forgot to mention that the roof has aged so it will have to be replaced as well both on the house and the garage. Did I mention that there is no point in doing all these changes without redoing all the plumbing and most of the electrical wiring in the entire house? Then the plumber persuaded me that I really needed to change the water heater and two would be better than one not to mention the excellent deal he gave me on a water filtration system. I'm guessing that by the time this project reaches completion all that will be left of the original house are a few bits of wall here and there.
It began in April. As the project grew the importance of completing any one thing moved to being goverened by the adjacent project. Resultantly the entire main floor of the house and most of the upper floor are in entire disarray. Yesterday the first piece to be completed actually made it. The stairs and upper landing are finished! There is hope.
Here are some pictures.

And there you have it.
