Today another summer day dawns warm and excessively humid with a moderate breeze wafting sulphurous odors across the Hudson River from somewhere in New Jersey. As he enters the subway on the way to work, flaccid acres of flesh press toward him from every direction in a torrid torso assault. Later he enters a Korean grocery to purchase a can of Hormel chili. As he is about to pay the bill he notices the clerk's left hand has three fingers missing. Of course he says nothing, pretending not to notice the mangled hand fumbling for his change
