Happy 4th of July to all my readers! The 4th of July is special to school administrators. It is one of the few days where we can catch our breath, sit back, relax and most importantly do not have to work on plans on how our school is going to meet AYP!
I like to spend 4th of July rather simply. I sleep in late, grab a cup of coffee and sit out on my deck and reflect. Then, I fire up the grill, invite the neighbors and a few nearby relatives over for my world famous hamburgers! Yummy! Then I grab a beer and talk to people. Sometimes I talk about sports, politics, or yard work. Even though I am a high school principal, I am still a human! That means a weed or two in the yard! Eeeeek! Then, as twilight comes, me and my family hop in our car and drive a mile or two into town to the park and prepare for fireworks. The wait sometimes is the most fun. Every year, I see old students, friends, fellow educators, all kinds of people from my past.
Then the fireworks start! Oh what a joy! All colors! Every year they seem to get better and better. The bad news about them is they never seem to last long. Time goes by so quick with all the oooohs and aaaahs. As a school principal, I am a hard person to impress. However, the fireworks always impress me!
As they end, I look at my watch, sit in firework traffic and reflect again. I then get sad. Tomorrow is July 5th. Just a normal day. Back to making AYP plans, hiring a teacher for that pesky Chemistry teacher position, and calling the superintendent. Even principals have bosses! That's life as a school principal! I wouldn't have it any other way!

                                                    For the children,

                                                       Mr. Principal

Your version of a perfect observation of the holiday sounds quite pleasant.  As a former principal's bane I can only express my sincere appologies for all those gray hairs and bald spots.  Of couse I am likely several years your senior and I think I may have made amends, at least to a certain degree.

Fireworks - flowers of fire. I guess that's why so many of them have flower names.
