Well, that sucked. I was six seconds off the time of my first 5K despite being (IMO) in better shape. I didn't come in last, but I was damn close (expect for the walkers). I had a lot of trouble breathing this morning, and I was so loud about it that people probably heard me in the next town.

I was feeling okay when I started, and actually ran the first mile in 9:50, which is blazing fast for me.  It was all downhill from there, however, and by the time I slogged to the finish, it was all I could do to keep from dry-heaving.  Plus, my right foot kept going numb.  If I don't completely give up running, I'll probably have to look into getting a better-fitting pair of shoes.

The only good thing about the race is that my uterus didn't fall out while I was running!

And now I'm going to call my mom and see if she and I can't meet up for some retail therapy. If I can move, that is. I'm starting to stiffen up.

Maybe this running stuff just isn't for me.

hey, you finished, which is really the challenge of running, if you ask me!

ed: I suppose one could argue that the challenge of running is getting out the door in the first place, but I finished.

Unfortunately, I have a cold.  Geez.  Who gets a fucking cold in July?  I think that was part of my breathing trouble.  I guess it's possible that I have EIA, though it's never been an issue before.

Running with a cold is a real challenge as you just can't process oxygen fast enough to keep feeding your leg muscles. I did a similar 5k a few years ago, where my first mile was a bit quick and then I nearly died on the way to the finish line. That was when I vowed to never again run with a hangover. The ambient temperature can also have an impact on your stamina so if it was at all warm this morning that would have slowed you down as well.

I'm glad that you ran and that you finished. Your thought on shoes is on the mark - poorly fitting shoes can cause all sorts of problems. So can laces that are tied too tightly.

    Good job!

LJ: It was 67 this morning, cloudy and sprinkling.

I think the shoes will have to be relegated to weightroom status.  They fit, but the right one just doesn't work for running, though this is the first time I've had a problem with it while I was running.  That right shoe also has some stitching inside that makes my sock touch my little toe in an annoying way.

That's great running weather, though my preference is for even cooler temps. It's amazing how a very small flaw in the inside of a shoe can cause all sorts of problems when you pound your feet in them over a few miles. I once cut my foot open and soaked a shoe in blood from a cut caused by a small burr inside a running shoe. Hie thee to a shoe-ery, young lady. :D

Has your uterus fallen out before?

Hey, the good thing is that you stuck through it and made it to the end. Running is hard until you find either that you love it and can take the physical discomfort or that you hate it and never what that kind of discomfort again. I don't run, but I know people who are really into it. They enjoy themselves.

I'm proud of you Eilan!  I couldn't have walked it let alone run it!  Don't be so hard on yourself.

LJ: I think a road trip to a running shoe store will be in order if I'm going to continue to torture myself this way!

serious: Thank you, and welcome to my blog.  :)

qp: I ended up not going shopping because of the crappy weather, but there's always another day for that!

hotaka: I can't say that I've ever lost my uterus before.  Figures, since I won't be needing it anymore.  I want to love running.  I really do.  I (usually) love how I feel afterward.

fearing: Thanks!  I guess even when I can't compete against others I try to compete against myself.

Eilan, that's a great idea. Try to find one that is owned and operated by runners. We're very lucky here in that the local store owner and his wife are both long-time runners and triathletes (it's more than a little intimidating to see the Hawaii Ironman contestant bibs on the wall). They know their stuff and give excellent advice to everyone, even guys like me who barely put any real wear on their running shoes. Mark, the owner, has never recommended anything but the least expensive shoe that will give me the best possible support without going nutty on the price.

One of the main realizations I had while watching the Olympics is that I am pretty darn lazy....
Forget waiting until next week to run 3 miles-I did it tonight!...
