I had a psychic grab my hand and tell me, "I'm not supposed to do this, but you need to know this.  You will live to be an old woman."

I asked,  (in my mind) "How old is old?

She immediately squeezed my hand hard, and said, "OK, 82?  All right?"

I looked her in the eye and wondered if I had spent $10 on a bogus skam, or if she was telling me the truth.

I still don't know, of course.

But, if she was right, I have 29 years left.

I used my calculator to figure out exactly how long that is, by measuring 29 years of my life, and where I was 29 years ago, and what had happened to me since then.

In one way, that was a long time ago!

In another, man----just 29 years?  Twenty-nine more summers, Christmases, birthdays, 4th's of July....doesn't sound good....

I don't want to know if she was wrong....and I don't want to know if she was right......

Too scary either way.....

But I like the long view the best...alot did happen to me in a span of 29 years.

wombat- Remember, as you get older, time will go by much more quickly. So we're talking about, oh, maybe nineteen years. You'll get 29 birthdays and holidays, but they come around much more quickly.

Aren't you glad I'm around to cheer you up tonight?

Although I intend to live up to 100 (or at least up to 99...), I do see the need for a reality check and contingency plans. Lol.

Ok, so someone tells you you get to live up to 82. First, you have to get a 2nd, 3rd, etc. opinion. Don't stop until you find someone who tells you you'll live up to a hundred.

Second, if you do accept 29 years is what you have, think of it as 1,508 weeks. That's a lot of Sunday afternoon barbecues and parlor games. Or think of it as 10,585 days. That's a lot of early-morning smiles and hugs.

Psst, Beyond, sorry I'll have to debate you on this one. From childhood to teenage life, time seems to go slow. Then, in adulthood, it speeds up. Finally, when we get to our mid-60's, it slows down again. At least that's what my father told me... :-)

beyondtheveil:  I wrote a downer of a post, didn't I  I was going to delete, but since there are responses, I guess not.  You are probably right about the time seeming to go more quickly.

moonriver:  I like your way of thinking!

Queen:  I know--I didn't really believe her--but she sure sounded like she believed it herself!

botoni:  Thanks, botoni!  I imagine so, considering how bad I look now....ha!

My grandmother on my father's side had a massive (in those days) heart attack and almost died when my father was young and my aunt was only 5 or so.  She always told me that she'd pray asking God to let her live until her daughter got to her 15th Birthday.
After my aunt's 15th Birthday she'd pray (on a daily basis) and ask for 5 more years please God just 5 more years.
My grandmother lived to be 95. (or was it 96?)
Don't count on psychics or fortune tellers.  I'll admit that some may have the gift but they are not the higher authority.

awe, yes you will live way past 82!
  • everythingyouthink said on Jul 06, 2008....
Here's another way of looking at it.  Even if the prediction that you will live until the age of 82 is correct, it's based on your situation and life choices right now.  Remember that there is also free will, and that you can change things for the positive or negative (like starting smoking or eating better or whatever).  The psychics certainty is based on the idea that there is only destiny... But it seems that free will plays a part as well.

skald:  Well that's a nice thought!

RollingC:  That's some story...thanks for sharing and sorry I am late in getting back here.  I don't really believe in psychics--especially knowing when someone will die.  It was a strange experience, though...very believable the way she did it.

quietone:  Maybe...but in what condition?  She didn't specify that....

everythingyouthink:  I see your point!  What if I decided to jump off a tall building?  Would I magically land on someone's air mattress they had just thrown out?

Thanks all for reading.  I've been in and out a little, but behind with the weekend and all.

Hope you all had a nice holiday!
