Since it's Canada Day here are a few facts about our country for your upification:

*  Canada is the second largest country in the world.  (Russia is the largest.)

Dont tell Texas.

*  population over 32 million people.

Not very many considering our size.

*  there are six time zones in our country.

I can get confused in all of them.

*  Canada is the home of over a million Native people.

Native people are renewing their interest in their own heritage.

*  Nearly one-forth of all the fresh water in the world is in Canada.

Come enjoy our fresh mountain streams.

*  Canada has the world's longest coastline.

Everything from sandy beaches to massive cliffs.

*  The name "Canada" comes from the Huron and Iroquois ward "Kanata" meaning "village".

We have a tendency to use many Native words in naming our places.

*  Forests, plants, animals and fish are some of Canada's renewable resources.

We like to boast about them too.

*  There are 42 beautiful National parks in Canada.

I havent been to all of them but those I have seen are exceptional.

*  The 3 larges cities in Canada are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Calgary is in the top six.

*  The main highway system (completed in 1962) is called the Trans-Canada Highway.  It is the longest nationa highway in the world!

I actually helped build it.

*  Minerals, metal, natural gas, and oil are some of Canada's non-renewable resources.

We're using them up far to fast for my liking.

*  Canada exports many items like:  motor vehicles and parts, industrial machinery, aircraft, telecommunications equipment, chemicals, plastics, fertilizers, wood pulp, timber crude petroleum, natural gas, electricity, and aluminum all over the world.

Timber and crude seem to be the ones most recognized as Canadian.

*  Canada has one-tenth of the world's forests.

This is a difficult fact to absorb for a guy raised in the prairies.

*  Hockey is the national sport of Canada and we love it.

Technically our national sport is Lacrosse but hardly anyone knows that or plays it.

Doesn't it just figure that those upity folk across the northern border would go and have their national holiday just a few days before ours, eh?

I haven't spend a great deal of time in Canada, mostly in Ontario Province but I have traveled the QE Highway west as far as Windsor.  That's in Ontario too isn't it.  I quess I've never been beyond Ontario then.  Anyway what I was getting to is that Canada, at least as much of it as I have seen, is quite beautiful.  Eh?

I guess the QE is part of the Trans-Canada isn't it?

First---love that word---upification!  Sounds like our President Bush...ha..

Fascinating to learn where the word Canada came from--but not surprised.  I have studied up (upificated myself?) on a little of the French Canadian/Native history since I married my hubby and moved up here.  (I found out he was descended from the "Wabaniki" tribe, sometimes called the Abanaki, I think.... hence his deep brown eyes......I forget now and the papers are somewhere around here...)

So, you helped build the longest national highway in the world!  That's one for the books!

I hope since I am so close, one day I will get to come up and see some of those beautiful parks!

    Great post....thanks!

Whoops!  I forgot something I meant to say!  You mentioned Canada Day on one of my posts, I think.....anyway  Happy Canada Day!  I looked on my little book where I keep up with my hours of work this morning, and the first thing I saw was it Canada Day written there.  So, I thought of you early this morning!  (and how you said we should have a party!  I may have lost my place on that...can't keep up, you know......ha!)
  • botoni said on Jul 01, 2008....

Soaring.....I'm going to risk displaying my own ignorance.  I think the QE (401) is a part of the Trans-Canada.  I've been on it many times but I've never been the driver so I havent paid that much attention.  Some Canadian is gonna shoot me for that if I'm wrong.  You're right Windsor is still in Ontario.

Wombie.....I'd forgotten that you lived in Canada for awhile.  You mention papers that your husband has.  That indicates to me that he may be what we call a 'status' aboriginal.  If so he has many priviledges in Canada that the rest of us dont.  I do believe any excuse is a good one for a party.  Between Canada Day and Independence Day we should be able to rig up a four day bash.  You in?

  • wombat said on Jul 01, 2008....
botoni:  Sorry----I have not lived in Canada, but wish I had.  Hubby is just from this area and is descended from that tribe, which is Canadian, I think.  I was amazed at the info I read about it.

But, I am always up for a party!

(p.s.  If I ever have to move, I am coming that way, I believe...either that or middle west if I can't get to Ireland)  One of those three....

The Qew is not part of the trans Canada Windsor is still in Ontario (for now we did try to sell it to the US 4 times but no takers)

    HAPPY CANADA DAY

Especially to all our troops overseas

Wombie......Pardon my presumption....as you know I'm easily confused...lol.  By all means come to Canada.  We'll find you some great sunsets.

Cussane....Thanks for setting me straight.  We westerners can get easily confused.

HAPPY CANADA DAY TO YOU TOO.

AND OF COURSE TO OUR TROOPS OVERSEAS.

I just realized what papers my husband had that made you think that maybe....his card to get into Canada when he was driving over the road.  He had lost his wallet and maybe I mentioned that before.....nevermind....water under the bridge.....ha!
  • botoni said on Jul 02, 2008....
Wombie.......As you know I confuse easily.
  • wombat said on Jul 02, 2008....

Canada has always fascinated me as an American. I've always thought it to be strange how little information the general U.S. population has about Canada, and I am guilty of it too. We are literally connected as one continent but seem to share such little information with each other. Unfortunately a lot of Americans enjoy stereotyping Canadians too often. It seems like a beautiful country to me, and the Canadians I have met seem nice for the most part. I'd love to visit someday!
  • botoni said on Jul 03, 2008....
Lostboy.....Our two countries are really very similiar.  The American influence in Canada is huge.  Much of the television we get here is (almost all) is American and of course so are movies.  The largest percentage of our population lives within 200 miles of the Canada/US border.  We really are very good neighbors to each other.  Americans and Canadians both stereotype each other but I think generally it's good natured in intent.  Do come and see Canada we have a lot more going for us than appears on the surface.
