It seems my three oldest grandchildren have my summer rather much mapped out for me this year.  It is a good thing I hadn't made any specific plans of my own, or maybe not.

I had already promised to take the oldest five away for an overnight to a nearby theme park.  By nearby I mean significantly closer than Disneyworld or any of the Six Flags locations.  We will be doing that during the week following the fourth.  That will be five young ones between the ages of ten and fifteen.  I may need to spend time on the therapy couch after that trip.

It came to my attention last evening that I will also be going on a wilderness hike with the three oldest in early august.  What they fail to understand is that this old man has never done any serious camping, and while I do enjoy the casual stroll, that is nothing like walking with a purpose with a pack strapped to your back.   The way they have it all planned out we will be gone for almost two weeks.  We may just have to amend the itinerary a tad to accomodate the old man.  I am not too sure about taking that particular adventure, but I am a sucker for the kids and they know it.    We'll see how that all turns out.

In between these activities are the scheduled trips to the shore, usually two or three day events, with the lot of them including the three year old princess.  On these trips I will not be alone with them as at least one of the girls will be along each time to keep us in line.  There will be at least three of these outings, with at least one to include the entire clan hopelfully.

And then I have promised to take Nathaniel into either Philadelphia or New York City over Labor Day.    We haven't decided for sure at this point.  We had better get that finalized so we can make specific arrangements.

I had no idea that my retirement was going to be quite this busy.

You are a good grand dad and I hope you will have lots of fun with the  kids but don't let them do you completely in

If this is retirement, I want me some....sounds nice.  Except for two weeks of camping and hiking....that's sounds a bit much!  Then again, I wouldn't camp for more than one night...I would need my curling iron..ha...

Have a wonderful summer with the kids!

What adventures have been planned for you and by you! Everything sounds lovely and exciting but I'm with Wombat~two weeks of camping, unless it is in an airconditioned motor home, would be a bit much for me. Well, maybe a rustic cabin. Is that considered camping? The trip to a big city sounds great. I took my children at about that age and they have never forgotten it. You have a wonderful time Soaring but do take care of yourself. Those of us over 35 (cough) need to pace ourselves just a little.

Sounds like fun.  You're giving your grandchildren some wonderful memories.

My husband retired three years ago on the 9th of this month.  He's a later-in-life daddy, so he had two toddlers attending his retirement luncheon.  I'm fairly certain he didn't envision his retirement being quite as busy as it is!

skald  -  Thank you, I certainly hope I am being a good grandfather.

wombat  -  If it were two weeks in one place I might be a tad more comfortable with the idea, but the daily relocation to a sight a given distance away seems a bit intimidating.  Walking with a purpose is meant for the young I think.

pickersplock  -  Yeah I think it will be great fun, I just hope I survive.

secretlife  -  Should I make to the autumn.  Oh I do count my blessings daily and I am making much over little really.  I will thoroughly enjoy it.

woman  -  Well the young ones may just have to slow their pace a tad, but I will enjoy being out in the wild (at least as wild as it gets anywhere near here) for a time.

RollingC  -  Thanks, and I will enjoy it a great deal I'm sure.

Eilan  -  Busy is good.  And having the kids around will keep him young, that's one reason I enjoy my grand ones so much.  I feel so alive when they are around.

I knew it was coming. We thought we would lose him earlier this year to congestive heart failure. Somehow this wonderful soul hung on for a few more months and at 4:30 this morning he slipped away in his sleep. He was like a father to...
