  Depends on the nature of the smell I might suppose, but then most people don't refer to pleasant smells as smells do they.  They tend to use a term like aroma.

  Icelandic is an off shoot of Danish from over 1000 years ago. If the word is still similar then it's good it was the Speed Inn. In Danish speed is fart.

  They probably didn't think about it. I see some funny signs over here sometimes and I think people just don't consider how it sounds in other langauges, like English!
