Calgary was first established as a trading post at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.  At that juncture is a tiny community that has morphed through a variety of stages.  It was the site of many of the first homes in Calgary.  In its' early stages Inglewood had a degree of prestige.  Some of the newly wealthy built their homes in that community.  Over time there was a small business district developed.  Eventually it lost its popularity and deteriorated into rooming houses and homes that could be purchased at low end prices.  Now it has once again become a trendy area.  Its' popularity is due in part to it being within easy walking distance of the major downtown core as well as its location abutting two very llovely rivers.

In this portion are pictures of some of the older homes that have been rescued.  A large part of the district is now occupied by infill housing.  I havent shown any of them but they most often are architecturally related to the Victorian era.  Here, for your viewing pleasure, are a few of my favorites.

The one above is my favorite.

Other than the new roof this one has pretty much retained its original look.  It has been lifted and a new basement put under it at some point.

The picture above looks like a small house but in actuality it goes back to be as large as two houses.

The next time I'll show you some of the business buildings and then some glimpses of the rivers themselves.

I love the red one--or is that peach (the second one)--with the rounded porch. I so want to go sit on that porch with a tall glass of iced tea in hand and just drink in the laziness of the afternoon. Think they would mind?

It is interesting to look at some  of the older homes in a community.  It gives a town a sense of history when some of its older homes are well maintained and preserved as much as possible in their original appearance.  The town I live currently live in is struggling with this very thing.  So many folk want to rip down the old and replace it with cheap modern architecture.  And of course many of the older communities have gone to ruin due to changing demographics.

Zayda....It's actually a light colored brick.  I think we could get away with a thermos of ice tea and some frosted glasses on the porch.  That house is now used as offices for lawyers.  We'd just be looked at as a couple of eccentrics.  You're right on the money.  It was one of those hot lazy summer days today when I took that shot.

Soaring....It agitates me unbelievably that we have so much destruction of beautiful old homes and buildings here too.  The theory seems to be "if it's more than 20 years old rip it down and put up some glass and steel".  Yet we still have some preserved beauties.

All the of the beautiful older homes here have been turned into studio or 1 bedroom apartments for students. So, the outsides are still grand, but the insides have been terribly chopped up. [sigh]

i'm intrigued by the last one, botoni--it's strange to think that what looks from the front to be a fairly cozy home is in truth that enormous!

Every one of those homes has the one feature that I covet.  A front porch.  I've always wanted a front porch.  I can remember sitting on my grandma's front porch when I was a little girl, helping her snap beans.  Do grandmas even snap beans any more?

    They're all beautiful homes, botty.

bot- What caught me most was what some have already mentioned and that is the porches, especially the first two. It was a dark days when they eliminated porches like these from homes. Across the front or wrap around porches provided another world for the family in a home.

I am fascinated by your favorite and the lifestyle it could give, but cringe at the thought of heating, cooling, or re-roofing it. However, that wouldn't make me turn it down.

Zayda.....I really hate seeing stately old homes relegated into suites and rooming houses.  It's desecration as far as I'm concerned.

Silver.....I'll get a picture of that one from the side and post it soon.

Missie....I've noticed the odd grandma snap but not with beans.

Beyond....A front porch was a part of social life at one time.  Without them we've become much more distant with our neighbors.  You're right, I wouldnt be rushing to roof any of them.

I am in love with that second one!  I would feel like aprincess there....!  I would have my computer room in one of those turret rooms, and would not come out until my hair grew as long as Rapunzel's.....

The first one reminds me of a house we wanted to buy when we first moved up here from the south two years ago.  I was "in love" with it, too.   I love these old, beautiful homes with such character.

Thanks for sharing the photos and the background info.

Wombie......I can see you now in the turret with your tresses trailing and a servant filling your every wish.  Those old homes have a sense of romance that has been left behind.

Queen.....You'd fit in perfectly in that house.  Although it looks small from the angle I took its actually huge.

    Lots of room for pets!

Guess I'm in that place that a song like this can affect me so much, so I wanted to put it here for me.

The song came on the radio, so I "YouTube'd" it, and the video had some scenes that made me long for home so bad that I wanted to cry.
