If everything is as like is being reported in Iraq.
That all is good, and things are getting under better control,
Then why are we still there?
Better yet, why did we go in there in the first place?

ARGH!....

I think we went in for the oil, and that is why I think we are still there, and will remain there to protect our interests....hate to say it, but that is sure what it looks like.

    I agree....  oil !!!!!
In my opinion the day they went to Iraq...  they ballsed up big time...
but are too proud and stupid!!!!  to back off...

because we're not sure the Iraqis are ready to take over their own country.

    We can leave.
But all those no-bid security contracts to Republican campaign contributors like Blackwater, Hailburton, and KGR make it impossible to leave.
Oil money is newly spread frosting on the cake.

    Money is like crack.
Obama doesn't get money from those guys.
The only reason for HIM to stay is stupidity.

I hope he's not stupid.  He doesn't SEEM to be.

Nixon is never blamed for Vietnam.  He's teh guy who pulled us out.
Johnson didn't start the war but he didn't get us out either.  HE gets blamed more than anyone.

Vietnam was a mess after we left, so will Iraq.
Vietnam is now a trading partner, so will Iraq.

If Obama is any kind of student of history he'll begin withdrawal after he takes his hand off the Bible in January.  (Assuming he wins.)

No idea what McCain will do.  He acts like he's staying but one wonders if Vietnam touched him so little that he's okay keeping thousands there for no reason but money.

I highly doubt we went in for oil primarily (oil is the reason we give a shit about the Middle East at all)  We went in because we thought there were WMD's and so did a lot of other people.  We shoul dhave waited until we'd finished with Afghanistan first though.

Vietnam witnessed mass slaughter after the US abandoned them.  I'm ashamed that our country abandoned good people like that.  Once you start something you should finish it, period.

We'll abandon Iraq, the same thing will happen.  Good people will die, bad men will triumph and we'll sugar coat it as something that couldn't have been avoided.

Have you ever looked around your house and your life and realized how much oil is needed tof your life?  Oil is worth going to war over.
  • crybabylu said on Jun 29, 2008....
Sean,---- I am going to stretch my imagination here, and try to wrap my mind around the idea that we truly did go in because of the concern of WMDs, will you please tell me that when they got the report saying it was faulty information, and that was relayed to the president before that particular State of The Union address, why did he not keep that out of the address until he was able to check its validity?  I truly want to know what you think about that.

it's definitely a pride and money thing
  • bloc said on Jun 29, 2008....
we are an empire. We went in so that we could establish permanent bases in the region and assert power. This is why McCain talks about staying for 100 years.
  • SeanRenaud said on Jun 30, 2008....
Bush did the same thing all people do, (and presidents SHOULD be above) he listened to the information he liked, largely ignored the rest.

We also are an empire, but between Kuwait and Isreal I don't see what good we gained using Iraq as staging area, other than it's bigger than Kuwait.  As much as Saddam was against the US I don't think he would have stopped us from attacking Iran but maybe I'm wrong on that.
  • crybabylu said on Jun 30, 2008....
What if Obama gets in there, and we still don't get out of Iraq, what then?
  • SeanRenaud said on Jun 30, 2008....
If elected I highly doubt Obama will get us out, we've kinda gone to far to turn back.  Hopefully he'll start dealing with the Iraqi government much more harshly though.

If we went into Iraq for oil then why are gas prices high?  If we wanted Iraqs oil we could have bought it, the war for oil claim is silly.

The number one reason for going into Iraq was to prevent WMD's from getting into the hands of terrorists.  There are several secondary reasons that add to the mix.  Saddam was a threat but not as much of a threat as the terrorists that could have come into his country and got a hold of his weapons or money.

The position of Iraq, the people and the culture we are dealing with, and the radicalism of its neighbors like Iran and Syria make it very important that we leave the country secure, it is dangerous and naive to think a rapid pull-out is going to save anymore lives or make the world less dangerous.

"If we went into Iraq for oil then why are gas prices high?"

This is a non sequitur. The fact that our motivation for invading may have been oil does not mean that the result would be cheap oil. My motivation for starting a business is to get rich, it doesn't mean I will get rich as a result.
  • stopmediabias said on Jul 08, 2008....
Bloc-So I assume you agree with my other points.

The war for oil claim:  It is unreasonable to assume our government would invade another country for its oil when they can buy the oil or its equivalent from other countries AND wouldn't a surge of oil eventually lead to a dip in gas prices, (If the war for oil claim is plausable.)

frankly you aren't making any sense. Resources are always for sale on the market, yet most wars have been fought for resources.
