Blech! Puahhh!! Che schifo!!!

I found out that my red cells have been reduced to be some pretty scarce floating dots in my blood.......so my doc put me on an intense diet of iron-fortified foods. Plus, highly potent iron pills.

That's why i am muttering bleach and puahh at any dinner now.....someone kiils me now!

Because...damnit, liver is the nastiest food i ever ate in my life.

I mean.... i ate snakes, bull's balls, armadillo soup, fried sheep brain, cow's tongue, barely dead octopus, still moving sea urchins, horse meat....but this one beats them all...

I have a recollection of similar forced meals when i was a kid..The fact is I always been anemic...it runs in our Italian blood.....many of us have anemia.....in severe cases is called Mediterranea anemia and can cause pretty serious damage to your body.

Luckily i have inherited the mild type. When i was pregnant i had to ingest three times a day some bitterly disgusting vials of liquid iron for 6 months...
When i was a kid my mom used to give me these barely cooked thinly slices of liver and it was a real struggle, believe me, eat them. Until i refused them alltogether. And she passed to feed me horse steaks....guess they were better for my like Actually,  right now i would  prefer 10 horse steaks than another single bite of this stuff that i still have in my plate right now..

Just cant make it to finish it...

The taste is dirt, nastily sweet, muddy something
If you ever ate some you know what i am talking about.

I am cutting it in minuscule pieces and slathering them with onions, red wine, nutmeg, pepper, salt, powdered garlic...i am thinking any possible decent combination but it just doesn't help...

There is only one positive aspect of this ordeal....now at each dinner i end up slightly and pleasantly tipsy.......lol........ I mean....i have to wash down this nasty evil, right?
What better than a robust, flavored, red wine?

So if i start to talk Egyptian in the middle of my post.....you know why..

Naturally, any idea about how repopulating my blood nursery with his red babies will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Wanna have dinner with me?....lol...

Ginger: What about clams, oysters, and mussels, which are rich in iron? And eat lots of leafy green vegetables like spinach which help enhance iron absorption.

Here's a web page with a list of good options.
  • Lucytorial said on Jun 26, 2008....

I'm not much of a liver fan unless its duck liver pate or really good freau gras..... blech alright.

Why not just make up spinach soup ginger? puree'd with onions garlic and a little lemon juice its iron plus!

Mushrooms? mushroom soups good and mushies have great iron content, hmmm what else there has to something better than liver yuk!

I'm going to have a wine and think it over some, I understand eqyptian so go ahead..

  • Zayda said on Jun 26, 2008....
Do you like orange juice. I can't recall which brand it is, but I swear I have bought orange juice that is fortified with iron. And orange juice is one of the juices that helps improve iron absorption. So, when it's fortified with additional iron, that's a bonus.

Check out some food products that are specifically marketed for as healthy for kids. They are typically fortified with iron as well. I think Cheerios is one of the cereals that's fortified with iron.

ginsoul- Three of the foods I hate most are my 'three B's'- beets, beef liver, and buttermilk. I really feel for you. But zayda's web page looks yummy.

If you have to eat liver, does chicken liver count? Fried chicken liver with a batter and loaded with spices and catsup is a lot easier to get down than beef liver.

    Good luck , girl.
  • gingersoul said on Jun 26, 2008....
Zayda.......thank you for the link......i already went online last day to check out some super iron food...... and yes, i love orange juice and i have already bought a family size jar....i didn't think about checking in the kids aisle though ...great tip..:-)

Lucy.....oh, yes..its a matter of fact i had spinach too for lunch...i brought  a big bag at work and slathered them with lemon juice....and some nuts of top...nuts are rich in iron as well....i know...liver seems such a drastic choice but doc told me is the most iron packed food of all......mushroom soup? i can surely eat it....
So....Egyptian...uh?....i am already seeing up side down pyramids here.....lol...
  • moonriver said on Jun 26, 2008....
ginger -- When we were kids, beef liver was a 3x a week dish. At first I barely touched it. Blech is the key word. But then, we had no choice. We had to eat it or go hungry. Until it came to a point when our taste buds adjusted, and liver was just a tolerable abomination.

Nowadays, I find it agreeable to have a liver dish maybe once  a month -- slices of liver, marinated overnight in soy sauce and lemon juice plus sauteed bits of garlic and onion, then fried, and served with hot steaming rice. The blandness and aroma of the rice seems to neutralize the yucky liver taste.

There are of course other rich sources of iron among green leafies. Ah but you know that already.

And hey... have you tried getting more hours of sleep? You say, "who's counting? and who's complaining?" At first your body will cope with lack of sleep -- even enjoy it (*wink*). Then it will start complaining. Get more regular sleep hours, my friend. Take it from this barefoot doctor and sleep-disorder amateur expert. Lol.

BeyBey......is that you???? or is my iron deficiency that makes me have such a vision in the night?...lol....

I have no idea if chicken liver counts...why? does sound better to you?...its a double blech to me...

Fried........yeah, i can eat anything fried.....i am going to give it a try tomorrow ....another tipsy dinner is approaching....lol..
  • gingersoul said on Jun 26, 2008....
Moon.......oh, marinated in soy sauce...and with steaming rice.....this sounds a really good combination of flavors........but you have to come over here ..the real and cook for me...would you?.....

Lack of sleep you say....oh, my friend.....do you read in my mind? ..:-)
  • moonriver said on Jun 27, 2008....
Ginger -- Of course I can come right over with my recipe book, apron, and trusty ol' wooden chopboard. Be cook and butler at the same time. Oh, and teach you how to prepare my special recipe for catfish and young bamboo shoots.

Moonriver Kung Futzu say, lack of sleep, like gravity, is a universal law that affects all people in love. No need to read minds to see that one. So obvious. Lol.

No thank you!!  Liver is on my "not while I still have a choice" list of foods to eat.

Are there other foods with as good a result, or is it really the best option, unfortunately?  You have my sympathies and I totally understand needing that bottle of wine to wash it down.

I do think that Moon's recipe is good.... i like rice and soy sauce a lot....:-)
  • BreatheUnderwater said on Jun 27, 2008....

oh wow..that stuff like bull's balls, cow's tongue and fried sheep brain..where did you eat that? where you travelling and trying some local dishes? or were you left on some abandoned farm and had no other option than cutting.....well..i can't imagine you'd choose those parts of the animals then...have no solution to make liver taste better..liver reminds me of hannibal lecter..guess that's an image that's not helping either..

    :) no thanks  lol

  • gingersoul said on Jun 27, 2008....
Breathe.....lol.....actually, i ate the armadillo soup, the snake and the bull's balls here in Texas......and the rest in my home country, Italy..... go figure, uh?

    Oh yes...Lecter....lol.....

Fact is i am pretty open to experimenting when it comes to food...(well, beside liver, naturally)

Lately for example i am very interested in Asian cuisine......there are some dishes i am truly dying to try .....:-)
  • botoni said on Jun 27, 2008....

Ginger....I'm listed as being one of the few humans who actually like liver.  Here is a recipe that you might try.

Slice liver in very small strips, bread it with flour and fry it in butter quickly until it is just cooked through.  Season with salt and pepper.

Fry up a sliced onion and some chunks of apple (like Granny Smiths).

Mix the cooked liver in with the apple and onions to heat it.

You might be surprised at the light taste.

    Here is another:

Fry some chicken livers in butter with onion and a bit of garlic as well as a few cracked pepper corns.  While the mixture is still warm put it in the blender or food processor and add an egg or two.  Pour in just a dash of red wine.  Press the mixture into a mold or even just a bowl.  When it's well chilled serve it with some nice crackers or crustini and a dab of cheese - preferably blue if you like it.

Pork liver can be done the same way.  Just for your info pork liver is the richest liver source for iron.

I wish you luck.  Learning to like liver isnt an easy task.

I'm glad others had advice, 'cause I have none....But I feel for you!  the most disgusting I ever ate was "chittlens" and then because I was appropriatley starved at the time...ha....

Maybe try some liver with fava beans...and a nice Chiante? (sp)   (If you need to be strapped down with a full-face mask, please forget you met me.....ha!)

  • mommyof2 said on Jun 27, 2008....
Have you tried Liverwurst on rye with dijon mustard? Much better way to eat it.
  • MissMimi said on Jun 27, 2008....

Botty, why am I not surprised that you like liver?  ;)  For the record, liver and good recipe are a contradiction in terms.

Ginger, I'm with you -- liver is the work of Satan.  Yeccch!  I won't eat it, I won't even cook it.  It smells as disgusting as it tastes.  Pooey.

  • hotaka said on Jun 27, 2008....
I can just barely tolerate the taste of cow liver now. But as a kid it would make me gag. My parents loved it and we had it about twice a month. Being the dutiful son I ate what was on my plate but not without coating with a hefty dose of tomato ketchup. To this day I love ketchup, probably because it saved me from having to taste liver.

Chicken liver is absolutely out of the question! Involuntarily I spit it out before even chewing it.

Sure ginger, let's have dinner together. I'll bring the Heinz!
  • secretlife said on Jun 27, 2008....

Had a BBQ once and I asked some friends over and what preference they had as I was making hamburgers with 1/2 beef and 1/2 pork , with onions, watercrest and spices.  Also doing chicken and I think I BBQ'd  heart of beef (which comes out super soft but greasy tasting on the grill by the way...better to eat it the Peruvian way in sauce) and my British friend asked for ......
    ......Liver Hamburger......
I complied and had some made and the look on the Butcher's face as he was grinding it was priceless.  LOL
