Last week I wrote about the Ten Commandments over all.  As this was the first of an eleven week series on the Ten Commandments from my church called “Ten words of love” by Pastor Carlton Harris.

This Sunday the pastor explored the first commandment, found in Exodus 20:3.  It said, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

It  is a simple phrase, an incredibly simple concept that we all should be able to comprehend.  He is the Highest of all and there is nothing more sovereign and supreme as He is.  We should all recognize Him as such.

We all as humans have a tendency to break this commandment often.  God wants to be the top with us.  He wants to be the first thing we think about when we wake up in the morning.  He wants every breath we breathe to be for him.

Many people think that this means that you would put up a physical idol as a god, or maybe even worshiping the devil.  That is part of it, but to be specific, the gods that we could put before God, is anything that keeps us from doing his will. All the things that make us find ourselves harming ourselves and others. There are many Idols of false gods that we erect.  We worship television, The computers, and most popular of all of idols…”The almighty dollar.”  We gave it that name.  Some of us may even be so married to becoming a missionary and helping others, that we forget the reason we are doing it for.  We meditate on these things, we lavish all of our attention on these idols, our children, our parents, our husbands and wives; all of these things that you would put before doing the things that God put you on this earth to do.

The pastor gave us homework, to find the idols that we place in front of God.  What do we think about first thing in the morning? Is it your children, work, money (or lack thereof?) What drives us? Work, family? Are these things keeping you from concentrating your energy to god? Just examine yourself and meditate on what the idols are in your heart.  I know I have many of these Idols to knock down.

The bible said Love God with all your heart, with all of your soul and all of your mind.  Is your mind on God?  Is your heart with god?  Is your soul saved?  I write these columns to present the talent he gave me, so that in some way I can save my heart mind and soul and place it solely on the Lord. Hopefully it is a stride in the right direction.

Simply, the answer is NO! It doesn't jibe with the rudimentary doctrines of Jesus or even our own sense of morality. Who can condemn a newborn baby for sin? Who can say Adam condemned us all by sinning? It's a crazy concept!...
