The crunch is likely to remain the rest of the year, as battery production can�t be boosted until next year, said Toyota Motor Corp. Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada, who oversees production at Japan�s top automaker, according to an Associated Press report. �Hybrids are selling so well we are doing all we can to increase production,� he said. �We need new lines.�

Experts say dealers know that most car buyers are concerned more about the price of the vehicle than whether the dealer recycles the water in his carwash or uses less energy to light his showroom.But that could be changing soon. Ford Motor Co. said the Johnson Controls-Saft joint venture will supply batteries for a 20-vehicle test fleet of plug-in Escape Hybrid SUVs that will arrive in California by the end of 2009. The first vehicle of the test fleet arrived at a California utility company in December. Ford declined to name the battery supplier at that time. Nine more vehicles are scheduled to ship to the California utility by year end. The remaining 10 vehicles will arrive by the end of 2009.

"The state of New Jersey wants 22.5 percent of their energy to come from sustainable sources by 2021," Bradley says. "It has been written into law." As if high gas prices, a weak economy and a strike by a major supplier weren't enough to drag down Hummer's sales, Hummer dealers are now reeling from the news that General Motors Corp. may consider selling the brand, Associated Press reports. GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner told shareholders last week that the automaker was conducting a strategic review of Hummer and was considering all options, from revamping of the lineup to a partial or complete sale.
